Review International Telecom Services Trends : 2001 to 2003 / Giga Information Group, Inc.:

Companies with far-flung international operations should consider outsourcing non-critical international connectivity and telecom networking services, to focus internal IT on strategic activities to build revenues from core business activities. By 2003, the majority of Global 2000 companies will selectively outsource some or all of their international wide area data networks (WANs) and more than 40 percent of enterprises with operations spanning three or more continents will adopt managed converged WAN services, offered by a major global network operator. During the next three years, emerging international telecommunications players will join established players in expanding international IP-based networks and introducing business networking services into the largest international markets. They also will broaden their portfolios to include end-to-end services —managed international frame relay, Internet virtual private networks (VPNs), global Internet and remote access roaming and Web hosting. Successful international service providers will offer Global 2000 multinational customers what they want most, including: Improved service levels for end-to-end data and multimedia WAN services, Bundling and integrated telecom services that include multiservice price discounts and superior customer responsiveness and service-level agreement (SLA) compliance.

Web Services promise to provide a useful addition to the panoply of B2B technologies. Although still somewhat loosely defined and incomplete, we expect broad adoption within two to three years. Read this Planning Assumption and learn about the current state of Web Services, how Web Services should be used, where Web Services can add value to your company and the time line for Web Services Market Development. Since early 2000, Microsoft, IBM, Ariba and a host of more recent participants, including Hewlett-Packard (HP), BEA Systems and Sun, have worked together to define an emerging set of industry standards that enable a new, more dynamic means of Internet Application Integration ™ (IAI). This collection of standards is still loosely defined and incomplete. When they are completed, they will enable a specific technical means of application communication called Web Services. Web Services promise to provide a useful addition to the panoply of B2B technologies. Although still somewhat loosely defined and incomplete, we expect broad adoption within two to three years. Review The Five Phases of E-Business, Part 1 : The Maturing of E-Marketing and E-Commerce / Giga Information Group, Inc.:

E-business, the application of electronic network technologies to transform business processes, is at a turning point. Having come full circle with the first two phases, e-marketing and e-commerce, e-business will soon face its third, fourth and fifth phases: e-reengineering, e-customer relationship management and e-collaboration. Before these phases arrive, e-marketing and e-commerce still have work to do as neither have fully matured yet. Too many companies still struggle with the internet and fail to use it as an effective marketing and commerce tool. This Planning Assumption addresses the major lessons learned from e-marketing and e-commerce and what companies still need to do in order to master these critical phases of e-business. In addition, you will be introduced to the future phases of e-business (listed above) and the challenging task your company will face, to understand and implement these next phases.

Review PC and Handheld Markets : Projections for 2001 / Giga Information Group, Inc.:

Unless Microsoft, Intel and the PC hardware manufacturers can execute a compelling program to fuel PC sales, we expect 2001 revenue to be below 2000 rates by 10 percent to 20 percent for the first two quarters. Choose your vendors wisely. 2001 will be a difficult year for the personal computer industry. Due to a market crash in the technology segment, which is both driven by and driving the industry, there is little likelihood of recovery until mid-2001. Even then, this recovery will require a level of cooperation between Intel and Microsoft that has been impossible in years past and only seems slightly more likely today. The core PC companies have yet to address the key reasons why corporations and individuals are resisting the next wave of technology, and the collateral damage from the technology slowdown is exacerbating the entire issue. With expected continued revenue declines through the first half of the year, for many, this might be the last full year they are actively manufacturing product in this segment. There remains an increasing upside potential with handheld computers gaining in wireless capability - first in Asia, then in Europe, and finally in the United States. Since this gain does not require cooperation between two feuding companies, it is much more likely. However, much of this gain may come at the expense of laptop computers, which is one of the higher performing traditional PC segments, in terms of revenue and margin.

Review Security Trends for 2001 : Extranets Turn Up the Heat / Giga Information Group, Inc.:

Last year saw the immense growth of extranet-related initiatives around the world. 2001 will be a year of further growth and increased pressure to build secure and reliable extranet architectures. Further growth and increased pressure to build secure and reliable extranet architectures during 2001 will result in technologies being selected based on how well they meet urgent business requirements, such as: Authenticating remote users, Authorizing remote users to access resources like Web applications and data sets and administering and auditing disparate user populations and various target platforms. Interest in these requirements will cause organizations to put the brakes on public key infrastructure (PKI) implementations, while managed security services and privilege management products will see the most dynamic growth. Read this Planning Assumption to find out about further breakthroughs in IT security during 2001, and how more and more, people and policies will be recognized as the primary security focus, rather than technologies.

Review Market Overview : Knowledge Exchanges / Giga Information Group, Inc.:

The future of the global economy will require rapid access to intellectual property for product differentiation and innovation. Knowledge markets will prove a highly successful component of strategies to gain wider access to intellectual property. Knowledge markets create a forum for the acquisition of knowledge when it is required as well as a mechanism for valuing knowledge depending on demand or scarcity. Knowledge does not depreciate in the same way physical assets do. It is not subject to the law of diminishing returns - in fact, it is most often cited as an example of the law of increasing returns. The value of knowledge can increase or diminish, however, depending on the circumstances of the buyer. Knowledge exchanges have evolved into several models for client interaction, assets valuation and revenue generation, but all of them share the goal of delivering knowledge to consumers as an asset for a fee. Read this Planning Assumption to find out what markets and exchanges need to do to succeed.

Review Transition to E-Business an Opportunity and Challenge for Health-Care Industry / Giga Information Group, Inc.:

E-business will redefine the delivery, administration and management of health care during the next five years. Rising medical costs, industry consolidation, changes in the social culture and government legislation are driving the need for a change in traditional business strategies. Health care is the largest industry in the United States with annual spending of more than $1. 4 trillion, representing approximately 14% of the gross domestic product (GDP). In 2001, the cost of healthcare is expected to increase to double-digits with escalating costs in pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, professional fees and new technologies. Industry analysts estimate that 25% of these increases is due to inefficiency, due to the fact that health care is still a paperbound and fragmented industry trying to contend with a dynamic market. Read Richard Telesca’s Planning Assumption to discover what E-business opportunities exist for the health care market and what the challenges will be.

Review Market Overview: : B2B E-Commerce and the Rise of Multiple Electronic Channels / Giga Information Group, Inc.:

Business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce is changing, but Giga does not believe it is evolving toward the apparent simplicity of Internet e-marketplaces through which all B2B e-commerce flows. Traditional B2B sales channels through paper catalogs, telephone call centers, stores and, above all, salespeople will still handle many sales and orders for years to come. The key challenge for a company will be matching the right e-channel with the right customer or supplier relationship. Despite the hype given to Internet e-markets, Giga believes they will only capture 9 percent of total B2B sales orders by 2004 and 25 percent of electronic B2B sales orders. B2B e-commerce is becoming a complex world of multiple electronic channels, in which Internet e-markets co-exist with electronic data interchange (EDI) networks using traditional value-added networks (VANs), with EDI networks using Internet-based electronic trading networks (ETNs), with direct company-to-company systems connections over the Internet and with extranets and private e-markets.

Review Analysis of Enterprise Organization Survey / Giga Information Group, Inc.:

Enterprise architecture (EA) organizations are typically centralized efforts led by small groups of four to six people. In this Planning Assumption, Giga recommends including distributed parts of the organization in order to obtain the participation of development and infrastructure technologists. Read this Planning Assumption to find out how to best offset the enterprise architecture group’s habitual insularity, how the group can break free of the infrastructure-only mode and enhance its enterprise-wide influence. Learn why Giga believes the enterprise architecture organization should be centrally managed by a relatively small group, supplemented by a network of senior technical staff throughout IT. Also learn why most central architects should almost double the time they spend engaged in architecture consulting - as much as 50 percent of their time - in order to maintain credibility.
