Review Front-End Vision and Multi-Scale Image Analysis: Multi-scale Computer Vision Theory and Applications, written in Mathematica (Computational Imaging and Vision) / Springer:

Front-End Vision and Multi-Scale Image Analysis is a tutorial in multi-scale methods for computer vision and image processing. It builds on the cross fertilization between human visual perception and multi-scale computer vision (`scale-space') theory and applications. The multi-scale strategies recognized in the first stages of the human visual system are carefully examined, and taken as inspiration for the many geometric methods discussed. All chapters are written in Mathematica, a spectacular high-level language for symbolic and numerical manipulations. The book presents a new and effective approach to quickly mastering the mathematics of computer vision and image analysis. The typically short code is given for every topic discussed, and invites the reader to spend many fascinating hours `playing' with computer vision. Front-End Vision and Multi-Scale Image Analysis is intended for undergraduate and graduate students, and all with an interest in computer vision, medical imaging, and human visual perception.

Review Advances in Digital Forensics IV (IFIP International Federation for Information Processing) (IFIP International Federation for Information Processing) / Springer:

ADVANCES IN DIGITAL FORENSICS IV Edited by: Indrajit Ray and Sujeet Shenoi Digital forensics deals with the acquisition, preservation, examination, analysis and presentation of electronic evidence. Networked computing, wireless communications and portable electronic devices have expanded the role of digital forensics beyond traditional computer crime investigations. Practically every crime now involves some aspect of digital evidence; digital forensics provides the techniques and tools to articulate this evidence. Digital forensics also has myriad intelligence applications. Furthermore, it has a vital role in information assurance - investigations of security breaches yield valuable information that can be used to design more secure systems. Advances in Digital Forensics IV describes original research results and innovative applications in the emerging discipline of digital forensics. In addition, it highlights some of the major technical and legal issues related to digital evidence and electronic crime investigations. The areas of coverage include: - Themes and Issues - Evidence Recovery - Evidence Integrity - Evidence Management - Forensic Techniques - Network Forensics - Portable Electronic Device Forensics - Event Data Recorder Forensics - Novel Investigation Techniques - Forensic Tools This book is the fourth volume in the annual series produced by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Working Group 11. 9 on Digital Forensics, an international community of scientists, engineers and practitioners dedicated to advancing the state of the art of research and practice in digital forensics. The book contains a selection of twenty-eight edited papers from the Fourth Annual IFIP WG 11. [+]
9 Conference on Digital Forensics, held at Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan in the spring of 2008. Advances in Digital Forensics IV is an important resource for researchers, faculty members and graduate students, as well as for practitioners and individuals engaged in research and development efforts for the law enforcement and intelligence communities. Indrajit Ray is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado, USA. Sujeet Shenoi is the F. P. Walter Professor of Computer Science and a principal with the Center for Information Security at the University of Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA.

This book is both a reference for engineers and scientists and a teaching resource, featuring tutorial chapters and research papers on feature extraction. Its CD-ROM includes the data of the NIPS 2003 Feature Selection Challenge and sample Matlab® code. "This book compiles some very promising techniques, coming from an extremely smart collection of researchers, delivering their best ideas in a competitive environment. " Trevor Hastie, Stanford University "Feature selection is a key technology for making sense of the high dimensional data. Isabelle Guyon et al. have done a splendid job in designing a challenging competition, and collecting the lessons learned. " Bernhard Schoelkopf, Max Planck Institute "There has been until now insufficient consideration of feature selection algorithms, no unified presentation of leading methods, and no systematic comparisons. This volume is noteworthy for the breadth of methods covered, the clarity of presentations, the unity in notation and the helpful statistical appendices. " David G. Stork, Ricoh Innovations "Feature extraction finds application in biotechnology, industrial inspection, the Internet, radar, sonar, and speech recognition. [+]

List Price: $160.00

Review Photorealistic Rendering in Computer Graphics: Proceedings of the 2nd Eurographics Workshop on Rendering (Focus on Computer Graphics) / Springer:

Photorealistic rendering strives to generate images from computer modeled scenes with an image quality as close to real life as possible. A major issue in rendering is simulation of local and global light reflection in a scene. Both ray tracing and radiosity algorithms capture only some of the possible light reflection phenomena. Recently developed two-pass algorithms combine the ray tracing and radiosity approaches and are able to capture the whole range of light reflection. This book is a collection of papers discussing the latest developments, including a new range of improvements, in stochastic sampling strategies, radiosity form factor calculation, and parallel processing for ray tracing and radiosity. A number of papers on rendering applications in interior design, lighting design, and remote sensing conclude the volume. The contributions are revised versions of papers originally presented at the Second Eurographics Workshop on Rendering, held in Barcelona, Spain, in May 1991. The book fully reflects the state of the art in rendering and presentsa wide variety of novel techniques. It will interest researchers and students in computer graphics, as well as designers who want to apply rendering techniques for realistic simulation in lighting design, interior design, and architecture.

Review Virtual Space: Spatiality in Virtual Inhabited 3D Worlds / Springer:

Containing the edited research papers resulting from an ambitious, cross-disciplinary research project, this volume examines the spatiality of virtual inhabited 3D worlds - virtual reality and cyberspace. (Three other volumes look at Interaction, Staging and Methodology. ) It is about the communication spaces emerging at the Internet and supported by special 3D interfaces. It is also about the virtual spaces created by virtual reality hardware (CAVEs, panoramic screens, head mounted display systems etc. ) and software. Virtual Space: Spatiality in Virtual Inhabited 3D Worlds is interdisciplinary. It deals with philosophical, psychological, communicational, technological and aesthetic aspects of space. While philosophy raises the question concerning the ontology of space - what is space - psychology deals with our perception of space. Communication theory looks at the way in which space supports communication (i. e. [+]
that space is a medium for communication), and finally aesthetic analyses exemplify the use of virtual space in virtual cities, in museums and in art.

Review Frontiers of Human-Centred Computing, Online Communities and Virtual Environments / Springer:

This volume presents the results of a joint National Science Foundation and European Commission Workshop which was set up to identify the future key strategic research directions in the areas of human-centred interaction, online communities and virtual environments. A research agenda is proposed for each area. There is an urgent need to make interaction more centred around human needs and capabilities, and to consider the human environment in virtual environments and in other contextual information-processing activities. The overall goal is to make users more effective in their information or communication tasks by reducing learning times, speeding up performance, lowering error rates, facilitating retention, and increasing subjective satisfaction. Online communities is an area of rapid and dynamic growth with new kinds of interaction, behaviours, communication, and relationship to the world of users and information. Guidelines for basic user interface design need to be extended to accommodate these new technologies and interfaces to users. Fruitful lines of research investigation in all these areas are set out in this book.
