Review ZapNote: Fidesic ZapNote: XML-Powered Electronic Payment / ZapThink, LLC:Paper-based invoices and payments are inefficient, time-consuming for both the payer and payee, and are fraught with potential for error and delays due to the postal service and the required time to take payment to the bank for deposit and processing. XML, Web Services, and associated technologies promise to solve these problems and present to users a more efficient, integrated, and lower-cost solution for automating electronic payment. Fidesic provides a solution to the above problems through an electronic invoicing and payment solutions that integrates with existing financial applications. The solution supports the full payment cycle from invoicing to payment transmission and settlement.

Review ZapNote: Forum Systems ZapNote: Advanced XML Network Appliance / ZapThink, LLC:Rather than requiring each application on the network to comply with the latest XML-based security specifications, compression algorithms, and business process standards, most organizations will seek to implement centralized intermediaries that will handle these tasks on behalf of the applications. Hardware XML Network Appliances can fill the role of the XML and Web Services intermediary in a credible way. Forum Systems has produced a hardware appliance that aims to fill the role as Web Services Proxy as and XML "Application Firewall" by processing XML network traffic and applying security, routing, and transformation operations to the data in a transparent manner. They see the XML Network Appliance as an increasingly important device that will become crucial to the acceptance and growth of XML use within the enterprise. Forum has correctly reasoned that security is the primary and most immediate market for these XML Network Appliances.

Review ZapNote: Symantec ZapNote: Web-Service Enabling the Product Line / ZapThink, LLC:For many software vendors, Web Service-enabling their product line is a daunting task. For such companies, Web Services represent more than simplified integration; they often represent a new approach to building and delivering software. Symantec, on the other hand, considers moving to Web Services a straightforward evolutionary product development step. The difference? Symantec has been delivering software as an automatic service for years, under their LiveUpdate brand. For Symantec, Web Services provide them an open standards-based approach to providing customer value following a business model they have already perfected.

Review ZapNote: B-Bop ZapNote: Leveraging Relational Databases for XML Storage / ZapThink, LLC:The only true solutions for enterprise-wide XML data storage and retrieval are XML-enabled RDBMS and Native XML Data Store (NXD) approaches. The challenge with XML-enabled RDBMS is that they are not very well suited to highly extensible and flexible documents, while the challenge with NXDs is that they are unproven technologies with very small user bases. However, there is another option that is a sort of "middle ground": the use of an interpretive middle layer over standard RDBMS systems that offers schema-independent, "native" XML data storage. In this vein, B-Bop offers their Xfinity Server as a way of providing the features of Native XML storage while utilizing existing relational storage architectures.

Review ZapNote: eXcelon ZapNote: Robust Native XML Data Storage and Management / ZapThink, LLC:There are two major categories of XML data store: extensions to relational database systems (RDBMS) and a new category of "Native" XML data stores (NXDs). While extensions to RDBMS systems simply enable RDBMS databases to map XML documents to relational tables, NXDs allow users to insert XML documents directly into the system without need for mapping or interacting with anything besides the XML document. eXcelon's eXtensible Information Server (XIS) is an "XML data management system (XDBMS)" that is aimed squarely at the problem of storing arbitrarily structured XML documents. Among other features, XIS provides node level management of XML data, dealing with XML document information at the element level, rather than the document level.

Review ZapNote: Westbridge Technology ZapNote: Soup to Nuts Web Services Management / ZapThink, LLC:Many software vendors entering the Web Services arena are jostling each other with respect to their various business models. Are they a Web Services infrastructure platform or a Web Services security platform? Or maybe they are a Web Services management platform, or even a Web Services gateway or router? While most vendors focus on one core competency, Westbridge Technology is developing a product that will be all of these things. The Westbridge Technology XML Message Server is fundamentally a Web Services management platform. However, it also offers security features, message transformation and routing, as well as directory administration, all on top of a powerful policy engine. If Westbridge can execute on their vision, they will be a solid contender for the elusive enterprise IT dollar, although they have set the bar quite high.

Review ZapNote: Business Genetics ZapNote: An Extended Business Process Modeling Specification / ZapThink, LLC:Even though there are undoubtedly large numbers of business process standards, Business Genetics insists that there are no standards that truly model a business' overall processes. They say the world of business modeling is fairly restricted to implementing confining use cases and specific transaction-oriented business processes. While UML provides a great way to model various processes, it is not a great way to model a business communication process. The goal is that the Extended Business Modeling Language (xBML) will be one of the first formalized frameworks to model a business environment.

Review ZapNote: Chrome Systems ZapNote: An XML-based Automobile Configuration Format / ZapThink, LLC:Many XML formats have been created in attempts to standardize various industries (over 500 by ZapThink's latest count), but none have squarely addressed the needs for configuration and "order option rules" for the automotive industry. As such, Chrome Systems, a leader in automotive configuration software has created and released AutoTransmission, an XML format for specifying rules for ordering configurable automotive components. While specific to the automotive industry, much can be learned from how Chrome Systems has approached this specific need, and many of the elements may be applicable to other similar industries.

Review ZapNote: Infravio: A Model-Driven Platform for Web Services Development and Management / ZapThink, LLC:One of the challenges of Web Services is the ability to reuse Web Service components and address lower-levels of data integration, such as matching data formats and the underlying data structures. The critical problem with existing approaches is that most enterprise systems that need to be integrated, such as SAP, provide schema rather than compiled objects for their interfaces, and so there is a need for a middle-layer to move between the schema and the SOAP message layer. The Infravio Web Services Management System (WSMS) provides a foundation-level architecture for Web Services development, deployment, and management. The Infravio WSMS provides a model for component re-use, code generation, and normalization of functionality through a standards-based, rather than single-vendor, platform-based approach to Web Services management.
