Review Sir Aurel Stein's Central Asia / Cosmo (Publications,India):

The vast territories of Central Asia and areas bordering the Indo-pak subcontinent played a decisive role through the Silk Route, in the intermingling of occidental and oriental cultures, specially those of Indian, Iranian, Chinese, West- Asiatic and Hellenistic origin. The rich legacy of the Central Asia was completely forgotten and the credit of its rediscovery goes largely to European explorers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Sir Aural Stein being the foremost among them. This is the collection of his works written during the three successive explorations covering a span of seven years in the Central Asian regions between 1900-1916. He discovered a score of Buddhist shrines containing rare murals and varieties of structural relics besides sculptures and other articles.

Review A Historical Atlas of South Asia: 2nd impression, with additional material (The Association for Asian Studies Reference Series, No. 2) / Oxford University Press, USA:

Originally published in 1978, A Historical Atlas of South Asia was received with enormous critical acclaim, variously characterized as "a landmark" and "a tour de force. " This invaluable resource is welcomed back in a newly updated form, no longer depriving scholars of this outstanding achievement. The fruit of sixteen years of research, the Atlas consists of over 650 beautifully rendered original maps, most in color, detailing the ethnographic, political, and cultural changes on the Subcontinent from prehistoric times to the present. The maps are supplemented by several hundred additional charts, tables, chronologies, photographs, and line drawings, arrayed side-by-side with the maps on 149 large photographic plates. Following and complementing the plates are some 150 pages of text, keyed to the maps, outlining the history of the region-from politics to religion-in formidable detail. For this second impression, Schwartzberg and his collaborators have contributed twenty pages of additional text and bibliography, bringing the volume up-to-date through the regional census of 1991. A bibliography of over six thousand sources, a comprehensive index, and five end-pocket inserts are included to make this a classic resource. A virtual encyclopedia of South Asian history, the republication of the Atlas offers students of Asian history, geography, religion, anthropology, archaeology, and politics access to a book that has been sorely missed and unlikely to be superseded in the foreseeable future.

Review George Nathaniel Curzon: Collected Writings: Collection 1: Asian Travels (Critical Concepts in Asian Studies) / Routledge:

George Nathaniel Curzon was a man of considerable intellect and ambition, combined with a degree of energy and application which were all the more remarkable given that he suffered throughout his life from a spinal deformity which gave him continuous pain and often incapacitated him. His correspondence was prodigious and his output of books, articles and speeches extensive, while the official documents that he produced reveal his close attention to even minor aspects of his responsibilities. Some of his speeches and articles were concerned with British political affairs, and other articles and books dealt with his interest in the conservation and restoration of buildings. The majority, however, stemmed from his global travels and his time as Viceroy of India. His travel writings were notable not just as travelogues, but also for the political, commercial and economic commentaries and analysis that they contained. Sir Martin Ewans has agreed to edit a selection of these writings for Routledge in a five-volume set, bringing his personal experience as a diplomat and acknowledged expert on Central Asian affairs to this comprehensive collection of the works of Curzon that will prove an invaluable research resource for the future.
