Review John Frewen, South Sea Whaler / IndyPublish.com:

George Lewis Becke (1848-1913) was an Australian short-story writer and novelist. He began his voyages in the south seas at a very early age and there are two accounts of these beginnings: one by the Earl of Pembroke, who presumably obtained his information from Becke, which is prefixed to By Reef and Palm (1894), and the other written by Becke. It is difficult to reconcile them, and all that is certain is that Becke spent many years on vessels trading in the Pacific islands. Becke went to London, and he remained in Europe for about 15 years, during which time a large number of collections of short stories and a few novels and stories for boys were published. He was fairly paid by the magazines for his stories, but he always sold his books outright. About 30 of Becke's books are listed in Miller's Australian Literature with six other volumes written in collaboration with W. J. Jeffery. Among Becke's books are: The Naval Pioneers of Australia (1899), and By Rock and Pool on an Austral Shore and Other Stories (1901).

Review The Complete Guide to College Success: What Every Student Needs to Know / NYU Press:

Bookstores are filled with shelves and shelves of books telling students how to get A's, how to manage their time more effectively, how to succeed socially, and how to get along with their roommates. Few, however, combine all these elements into a single, handy volume, and almost none are written by students themselves. Unique in its approach, The Complete Guide to College Success adopts a conversational style that engages the student in dialogue with its question and answer format, all the while providing useful, hands-on suggestions that translate into a positive college experience. Divided into three sections, The Complete Guide tackles Personal Development, Social and Interpersonal Excellence, and Academic Success. Each section is filled with self- improvement tips and strategies to make the college experience in its entirety a rewarding one. Descriptive and prescriptive in nature, the guide both informs readers and advises them:Do you have trouble taking tests? Here are some easy, and extremely effective, ways to enhance your memory and ace your exams. Are you always at a loss for time? The book provides straight-forward and proven strategies for time management. Nervous about meeting new people? Richard Newman has just the advice to put you at ease and to show you how to engage others. Concerned about dating, relationships, and sex issues in college? This book presents perspectives from students all over America. Newman also serves up an in-the-trenches look at college life with his Student Views, which introduce most chapters. [+]
Student Views are a collection of quotes gathered from college students around the country, who give their take on the issue that the chapter discusses. While most college guides are written by professionals in the fields of psychology or health, The Complete Guide to College Success is one of the only books written by a real expert—a student himself. Newman knows the reality of contemporary college life and here presents a wide range of college issues. Informal, candid, and easy-to-read, The Complete Guide to College Success is a book no college student should be without. Table of ContentsAcknowledgmentsIntroduction1. The Power of Belief 2. Review Tom Swift And His Big Tunnel / IndyPublish:

Professor Swyington Bumper seemed to live in a region all by himself. Though he was on board the Bellaconda, he might just as well have been in an airship, or riding along on the back of a donkey, as far as his knowledge, or recognition, of his surroundings went. He seemed to be thinking thoughts far, far away, and he was never without a book-either a bound volume or a note-book. In the former he buried his hawk-like nose.

" It was Koku, or August, as he was sometimes called, the new giant servant of Tom Swift, who made this announcement to the young inventor. "Who is it, Koku?" inquired Tom, looking up from his work-bench in the machine shop, where he was busy over a part of the motor for his new noiseless airship. "Any one I know? Is it the 'Blessing Man?'" for so Koku had come to call Mr. Damon, an eccentric friend of Tom's.
