Review Don Bradman: Challenging the Myth / Cambridge University Press:

Unlike the mostly reverent literature on Australia's most popular sporting hero, this book explains how Sir Donald Bradman's iconic status was created and sustained. How does his popularity and heroism relate to Australian nationhood? Brett Hutchins' unique analysis reveals the mythical character of so many representations of "the Don," and connects them to broader social phenomena and the cultural contexts in which they were created.

Review Tottenham Massive / John Blake:

There have been many books written about soccer's most uncompromising firms, but for years little has been revealed about one of the most secretive and ruthless of them all—Spurs. And for the last 15 years the "Tottenham Massive" have been nurtured and guided by one individual: Trevor Tanner. In his explosive first book, Tanner is brutally honest in his quest to set the record straight about the truth behind Spurs' formidable notoriety and the way in which they have succeeded in forcing themselves into the minds of all connected to football. His first-hand accounts tell of the brutal 10-year war with Spurs' most hated rivals Chelsea, his mission to command respect for his firm, and his most bitter battle—securing custody of his beloved daughter.

Review S C H 'Sammy' Davis - My Lifetime in Motorsport: His Final Autobiography / Herridge & Sons Ltd.:

S C H Davis, known to friends and fans as Sammy, is one of the most popular and enduring figures in the history of British motor sport, universally remembered for his heroic, glorious victory for Bentley at Le Mans in 1927.   Born in the 1880s, he experienced and was involved in the earliest days of motoring before going off to the First World War in 1914. Though injured, he survived the War and in 1919 joined the staff of The Autocar. In the 1920s he earned a reputation as a fast, reliable and intelligent driver in competition, showing a profound sympathy and understanding of machinery. This activity, along with journalism, continued into the 1950s.   When hostilities broke out again in 1939, though now in his 50s and too old to enlist, he was able to wrangle his way into the war, and served through to 1945.   This is his last autobiography, crowning the two volumes of his experiences that were published in 1932 and 1949. It was drafted in the 1960s, when he was in his 80s, but was never published.

Review Snake Jazz / Xlibris Corporation:

The baseball term, "snake jazz", refers to those squiggly pitches (curve, slider, screwball, etc. ) that deviate from a direct path on their way to the catcher. This could also describe the strange and sometimes amusing twists in Dave Baldwin's progress on his way to the big leagues. As a skinny, awkward kid in the 1940s, Dave learned to throw under the searing Arizona sun amidst cacti and snakes. Despite that modest beginning, his father convinced him that success would come with focused hard work. His dad's encouragement enabled him to become one of the most highly sought-after pitching prospects in the nation as a teenager. Scouts and sportswriters said he was a "natural," "another Bob Feller. " He began to see his ability as a gift. Scouts had a favorite mantra - "We can teach a kid to throw a curve, but he has to be born with a fastball. " Upon hearing this often from the "experts," Dave lost the idea of self-development his father had instilled. [+]
If baseball skill is genetic, there's nothing to be done. Either the kid has the genes or he doesn't. This philosophy seemed to work well enough until one day during his sophomore year at the University of Arizona he threw a curveball that severely damaged his arm. All that "natural" ability went out the window. This would have ended his career before it began except he couldn't see life continuing without baseball. Thus, he started a desperate eight year struggle that culminated in his transformation into an unorthodox but successful major league pitcher - the drastic changes in his throwing style inspired by insights gained from his study of ecological genetics and advice he received from Max Surkont, an aging pitcher in Dave's first spring training camp. On Dave's baseball odyssey he found a roommate who sleepwalked swinging a bat, another who chewed Gillette double-edged razor blades, and still another who was working up to a stretch in prison. He eavesdropped on the witty repartee aboard a burning airplane and a death-defying bus trip, during epicurean brushes with the criminal underworld, and in that awkward moment right after a bullet had ripped through a taxi window. He got to dodge tornadoes, lightning, and baseball hobgoblins. He experienced the bonding effect of minor league pranks and comedy acts, and got a taste of what it was like playing baseball askew in the metaphysical whirl of Steppenwolf and the hippie generation. And he learned the irresistible attraction of Janis Joplin and the dry spitball. The odd adventures didn't end once Dave made it to the major leagues. He spent a season busily tormenting Ted Williams, and once he unexpectedly found himself teaching the knuckleball to Seri Indians in a remote desert village in northern Mexico. Snake Jazz includes a number of anecdotes reflecting the world around baseball during the 1960s and '70s, such as the beginnings of the Viet Nam war and the impact on baseball of racial bigotry during the Civil Rights Movement. One chapter recounts the peculiar and dangerous situation of American ballplayers in Havana shortly after Fidel Castro's rebels had gained control of Cuba. Snake Jazz is more than a series of remarkable anecdotes, however. It is a demonstration of the importance of motivation and mindset in reaching objectives. Dave's dream of playing major league baseball and his stubborn determination drove him to overcome the notion that ability is inherent. If his dad was right, there must be some way to make it to the majors through hard work, even after inherent advantage had been lost. The big question was, "Work hard at what?" He needed a good pitching coach to give him that critical suggestion that would turn his career around. He rarely saw a pitching coach in the minor leagues, and those few that were available did more harm than good. He continued to work hard to improve, but he was still practicing the same way.

Review All I Want for Christmas: My Last Season in Football / Vision Sports Publishing Ltd:

One of the great characters of the game, Iwan Roberts has been a cult figure at more clubs than he's had teeth knocked out by defenders (but only just!). All I Want for Christmas is a stunningly candid fly-on-the-dressing-room-wall insight from the club captain, striker and fans' hero as he battles to help Norwich win promotion to the Premiership in 2003/2004 (and in so doing score his 100th goal for the club). It's not a tale of mansions, fast cars and promotional trips to the Far East, it's a gritty, sometimes hilariously funny, diary of a footballer's life and his reflections on a career in the game as he rides the emotional roller-coaster of City's most exciting season for years.

Review The Life Of Fred Archer / Obscure Press:

The Life Of Fred Archer By E. M. Humphris. A biography of England's most famous jockey. Preface - "The author has flatteringly asked me to write a preface to this book on the famous Fred Archer, and as I knew him well and saw him ride a vast number of his races it gives me great pleasure to do so; and I commence by speaking of the five Derbys he won, all of which I witnessed. Archer had his first Derby success on Silvio, who started at 100 to 9 , in 1877, and, after a pretty finish, won by half a length from Glen Arthur, both the pair outstaying the favourite, Rob Roy, who was beaten three-quarters of a length for second place , with Rhidorroch fourth, a head behind Mr Mackenzie's colt. His next win at Epson was in 1880 , when he rode a most remarkable race on Bend Or, as he was greatly handicapped by having has his arm badly injured through Muley Edris savaging him after he had ridden that ill tempered brute in a gallop on Newmarket Heath a short time before, and also by Bend Or coming badly down the hill to Tattenham Corner owing to having sore shins. Archer, for all that, rode with such judgement that, bringing his mount with one long run, he caught Robert the Devil, on whom Rossiter certainly should have won as the race was run, in the last two strides, to beat him by a head. " Originally published in 1934. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. [+]

Review Gene Tunney: The Golden Guy Who Licked Jack Dempsey Twice / Robson Books:

Truth is stranger than fiction and Gene Tunney's story really does read like fiction. Tunney's fighting took place in the boxing ring and he returned home as champion of the American Expeditionary Force. His old job gone, he became a professional boxer and set his sights on Jack Dempsey, famed and feared heavyweight champion of the world. In 1928 he retired as undefeated champion and a millionaire to marry a beautiful heiress to the Carnegie steel fortune. As successful in business as boxing, Tunney became a captain of industry. His circle of friends included the President and such writers as Thornton Wilder and George Bernard Shaw. This is his amazing life story.

Review Go Long!: My Journey Beyond the Game and the Fame / Blackstone Audiobooks:

Jerry Rice has been called the best pro football player ever. In spite of Rice’s legendary gridiron skills, or even his ability to transform himself into an instant ballroom-dance prodigy on ABC’s hit TV series Dancing with the Stars, the surprising fact is, a guy like Jerry Rice is made and not just born. In Go Long! Rice shares the inspirational lessons and empowering practices that have helped him attain success, both on the football field and off. Through the ups and downs of Rice’s life and incomparable career, we discover how self-motivation, determination, and humility are the keys to achievement and true fulfillment. It’s been a long journey for Jerry Rice, from his childhood in Starkville, Mississippi, to a certain berth in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. As a kid, he was always working toward something, even if he wasn’t sure what it was. Rice honed his hand-eye coordination by catching airborne bricks tossed by his siblings while on the job with their bricklayer father, and he ran–everywhere. From these humble beginnings, Rice blazed a path to greatness in college and the NFL–a trip that was fueled by tireless effort and belief in a few simple principles, among them that achievement is a voyage, not a destination; that modesty and perseverance, not talent, are what determine how far you will go; and that everyone should strive to be a role model. Rice even demonstrates these rules in action, breaking down the greatest games from his stellar career. Go Long! is an inspiring book by a living sports legend. [+]
More than that, however, it is the story of how Jerry Rice awakened the champion within, illustration how we can unlock the greatness within ourselves.

Review Honus Wagner: A Biography / Blackstone Audiobooks:

Honus Wagner is generally acknowledged as the finest shortstop in baseball history. Along with Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, and Walter Johnson, he was one of the first five players to be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. His rare 1909 baseball card - known to collectors as the Holy Grail of American memorabilia - fetched nearly half a million dollars at auction in 1991. His rise paralleled the development of baseball as the national pastime, and his playing skills remain legendary. He was, possibly, the first superstar of American sports. At a time when baseball was a raw, aggressive game played by rugged men, the unflappable Wagner's humble ways enhanced his miraculous performance throughout his twenty-one-year career, including three seasons with the Louisville Colonels and eighteen with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Wagner's gradual emergence from the pack into stardom and popularity is described here in rich detail. But the book also reveals much of Wagner's family and personal life - his minor league career, his values, his failed business ventures during the Depression, his later years - about which, until now, there has been no well known narrative. Neither the "rowdy-ball" ruffian nor the teetotal saint constructed of legend, Wagner is presented here in a complete portrait - one that offers a vivid impression of the era when baseball was America's game and the nation was evolving into the world's industrial leader. The first decade of baseball in the 20th century witnessed the ascension of two stars who stood above the rest: Ty Cobb in the American League and Honus Wagner in the National. [+]
If Cobb was the game's tortured bully, Wagner was the anti-Cobb. He was kind and quiet, the most beloved figure in the game before Ruth, the local boy from the coalfields of western Pennsylvania who made good on the green fields of Pittsburgh's ballparks. Despite terribly bowed legs and freakishly large hands, he patrolled the shortstop slot with remarkable dexterity; he may not have been as acrobatic as Ozzie Smith, but no shortstop was steadier defensively. Offensively, he was a genius, winning eight batting crowns, four in a row between 1906 and 1909, and he remains, almost a century later, among the all-time top 10 in hits, doubles, triples, and stolen bases. Cobb, who rarely complimented anyone, considered Wagner "the greatest ballplayer that ever lived. " Yet more than 40 years would pass after his death before any biographer seriously went to bat with his life. In Honus Wagner, the DeValerias have produced a clean hit, maybe not a home run, but, befitting a star of the dead-ball era, a well-placed, well-struck double. As solid as Wagner himself-and at 5'11" and 200 pounds, he was solid-the "Flying Dutchman" emerges as a shy man who loved the game and loved to play it, and that's about the extent of it. He was a regular guy, no tormented Cobb, no educated Mathewson, no flamboyant Ruth. There are simply no strikes against him; he was unfussy, immensely likeable, anxious to please, tremendously supportive of his friends and teammates, and, while inordinately polite on the field, off of it he rarely pulled his punch lines. If anything haunted him, it was his poor performance against the Red Sox in the 1903 World Series, which he more than made up for against Cobb and the Tigers six years later. He may have led a simple life, but he wasn't exactly a simple man; his biographers treat him with the same respect he treated the game, and propel themselves with the same thoroughness, doggedness, and care that Wagner displayed on the field. -Jeff Silverman.

Review Gabby Hartnett: The Life and Times of the Cubs' Greatest Catcher / McFarland & Company:

Gabby Harnett is believed by many to be the greatest catcher of all time. This work chronicles Hartnett's life from his early years in Millville, Massachusetts, through his twenty-year career with the Chicago Cubs as player and manager, his time in various capacities in the minor leagues and with the New York Giants and Kansas City Athletics, to his post-major league career as a businessman in Chicago. His childhood, early baseball experiences with the local team and with a nearby prep school, and his first professional baseball season with the Worcester Boosters of the Eastern League are covered in detail. Hartnett's major league career as the catcher for the Cubs is well-documented, including his near career-ending arm injury in 1929, the 1932 World Series that featured Babe Ruth's legendary "called shot," and Hartnett's famous "homer in the gloamin" against the Pittsburgh Pirates that propelled Chicago to the 1938 National League pennant. The author also compares Hartnett's statistics to those of his famous contemporaries, Mickey Cochrane and Bill Dickey, on a year-by-year basis.
