Review Moving Zen: One Mans Journey to the Heart of Karate (Bushido--The Way of the Warrior) / Kodansha International:A classic story of one man's confrontation with the self through Karate. In 1962 at age twenty-two, C. W. Nicol left Wales to study Karate in Japan. He quickly found that the study of the martial art engaged his whole being and transformed his outlook on life. Moving Zen is the multifaceted story of a young man who arrived in Japan to study the technique of, and spirit behind, Karate. Joining the Japan Karate Association, or Shotokan, Nicol discovered that Karate, while extremely violent, also called for politeness and a sense of mutual trust and responsibility. He learned that the stronger the Karateka, the more inclined he was to be gentle with others. Those who have gained a measure of skill but have not yet achieved spiritual maturity are the dangerous practitioners. Studying kata, Nicol came to realize that these forms are, in essence, moving Zen and that the ultimate goal of all the martial arts is tranquility. [+]
Through the help of many gifted teachers, C. W. Nicol gained his black belt, and moved progressively closer to his goal of tranquility. His story, Moving Zen, was first published in 1975 and has achieved the status of a modern classic.

Review The Gentlemen's Society of Angling / Pruett Publishing Company:Fly fishing transcends the classification of sport for many anglers. For some, it is also an art and a sacred religion that celebrates the solitude experienced on a peaceful river, the excitement of following instincts and hunches, and the special bond between people who share a passion. In this book. first-time author Jay Hill introduces you to a group of men from the 1930s, whose love for fishing was lived out on the banks of the limestone creeks in Pennsylvania. Creeks that were the stuff of legend. Gentle flows. Clean. Stream-borne brook trout. If fly fishing has roots, these streams are among those where they were laid down. These men convened at a cabin up in the deep woods, where they shared tall-tale stories, camaraderie, and the unanimous goal to preserve the waters they loved. [+]
This would have all been forgotten as time marched on if they had not kept a diary - a diary found by two friends on a fishing trip many years later. A diary that brought to life the past. This nostalgic tale brings to life a secret angling society that will open your eyes to the extraordinary times of a group of friends that all shared the timeless love of fly fishing.
