Review Remembering Bradman / Viking:

Despite all the words written about him, Sir Donald Bradman has long been something of an enigma. A prisoner of his own fame, he valued his privacy more than anything else, yet as a point of honour answered every letter he received. Only after his death could his diverse friends and colleagues feel free to share their personal reminiscences of the world's greatest batsman. In his life both within and beyond cricket, Bradman's foibles and obsessive pursuit of perfection are revealed, as well as his private moments seemingly at odds with his public persona.

Review Formac / The Fighting Fisherman: The Life of Yvon Durelle Publication date: 2005-03-01

Review The Fighting Fisherman: The Life of Yvon Durelle / Formac:

Yvon Durelle fought from the tiny Acadian hamlet of Baie Ste. Anne to within a heartbeat of being light-heavyweight boxing champion of the world. Durelle emerges in this book as a man of contradictions. His lifelong nickname was "Doux"-gentle-but he mastered a spectacularly brutal profession. Accounts of his fighting career reveal a man of incredible toughness and audacity: in 1952 he fought Olympic gold medalist Floyd Patterson with a broken hand. His life outside the ring was equally audacious: in 1977 he was charged with shooting and killing a man outside a Miramichi drinking club. This biography follows Durelle's painful progress through both worlds. The Fighting Fisherman is a remarkably frank portrait of a complex man and a punishing sport. This edition replaces the Goodread edition of this title, ISBN 0-8878-0114-5.

Review George Weidenfeld & Nicholson / The Perfect Distance: Ovett And Coe: The Record Breaking Rivalry Publication date: 2004-10-31
Dewey code: 796
Price: $30.00

Review The Perfect Distance: Ovett And Coe: The Record Breaking Rivalry / George Weidenfeld & Nicholson:

Steve Ovett and Sebastian Coe presided over the golden era of British athletics. Between them they won three Olympic gold medals, two silvers, one bronze, and broke a total of twelve middle-distance records. They were part of the landscape of the late seventies and early eighties - both household names, their exploits were watched by millions (in an age before video, satellite and Sky Sports, the BBC Nine O'Clock News was often interrupted to accommodate their successes). As far apart as possible in terms of class and upbringing - Ovett is the art student, the long-haired son of a market-trader from Brighton, a natural athlete; Coe's formative years were spent under the rigorous training routine of Peter Coe, a self-taught trainer who referred to his son as 'my athlete' - their rivalry burned as intense on the track as away from it. The pendulum swung between the pair of them - each breaking the other's records, and, memorably, triumphing in each other's events in Moscow in 1980 - for the best part of a decade, until the final showdown at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. Twenty years on, Pat Butcher, a runner himself and athletics correspondent of The Times in the eighties, has spoken at length to both athletes; to Coe, the Tory MP, and to Ovett, whom he tracked down in Australia. He writes in depth about the British obsession with and dominance of middle-distance running, the mile, and speaks to many of the great 'milers' down the years, the likes of the Swedes Gunder Hagg and Arne Andersson, John Walker and, of course, Roger Bannister. The Perfect Distance is both a detailed re-creation and a fitting celebration of the greatest era of British athletics.

Review Michael Joseph Ltd / Banksy: My Autobiography Publication date: 2002-09-26
Price: $37.20

Review Banksy: My Autobiography / Michael Joseph Ltd:

For ten years Gordon Banks was widely acknowledged to be the best goalkeeper in the world, and, perhaps, the best there's ever been. Along with players like Bobby Moore, Banks was first on Sir Alf Ramsey's teamsheet - England's number one in both 1966 and 1970. But in his prime, months after being named 1972 Footballer of the Year, it was all cut short when Banks lost an eye in a car crash. He defied medical opinion by fighting his way back onto the football field ending his career playing with other legends like Pele, George Best and Franz Beckenbauer in the fledgeling North American League. This book is the story of a genuine English hero and an account of England's finest footballing years.

Review Not Avail / The Hansie Cronje Story: An Authorised Biography Publication date: 2005-01
Price: $62.40

Review The Hansie Cronje Story: An Authorised Biography / Not Avail:

This biography is an attempt to expose what made Hansie the man he was, and to trace some of the tender lines of a remarkable physical, emotional and spiritual journey cut short. Covering his life story, it is important to know that Hansie's entire close family and circle of friends supported this title and their views and insights into his life form the basis of it. To insure a well-balanced story some of Hansie's harshest, most outspoken critics were also interviewed. Hansie, of course, was magnificent. But like all men and women, he was flawed, vexed by ambivalence. It is the marring of greatness that makes for such a compelling human story. Hansie's greatest battles were against himself. His story is therefore a universal story of the human condition, a story which may inspire reflection on one's own shortcomings, and on nature of sin, and forgiveness.

Review Jock Stein: The Definitive Biography / Highdown:

A truly definitive biography of one of the most influential managers in the history of British football and the first British manager, in 1967, to win the European Cup. By the time of his death at the side of a pitch in 1985 he had become a legend. He redesigned the landscape of the Scottish game as the great innovator, and successfully exported his values outside the country when European football was in the grip of an ice-age of defensive negativity. This compelling biography reappraises Stein's career and looks closely at the personality of the man whose shrewdness and cunning stamped him with greatness. The author worked his entire professional life as a contemporary of Stein and travelled the world with him. He was present at nearly all of the great triumphs associated with the Celtic and Scotland manager.
