Review Byzantine Empresses: Women and Power in Byzantium AD 527-1204 / Routledge:

The first extended work in the field since Charles Diehl published his Figures Byzantine more than ninety years ago, Byzantine Empresses provides much-needed historical data in an accessible and up-to-date form. Using a chronological approach, Lynda Garland provides a series of biographical portraits of the most significant Byzantine women who ruled or shared the throne between 527 and 1204. She presents and analyzes the available historical data in order to outline what these empresses did, what the sources thought they did, and what they wanted to do. Revealed are stories of imperial women who had considerable resources, such as powerful patronage, their own courts of women, eunuchs and ministers and who wielded an enormous amount of influence, such as total government control and the power to issue coinage and decrees. Lavishly illustrated, Byzantine Empresses provides an immense contribution to the study of women in Byzantine civilization.

Publication date: 2007-01-20
Dewey code: 811.4
List Price: $124.50
Price: $118.90

Review Letters of Emily Dickinson / Belknap Press:

Only five of Emily Dickinson's poems were published while she lived; today, approximately 1,500 are in print. Dickinson's poetry reflects the power of her contemplative gifts, and her deep sensitivity courses through her correspondence as well. Lovingly compiled by a close friend, this first collection of Dickinson's letters originally appeared in 1894, only eight years after the poet's death. Although she grew reclusive in her later years and seldom saw her many friends, she thought of them often and affectionately, as her missives attest. The small cast of daily characters in Dickinson's little world takes on vivid life in the letters, and her famous wit sparkles from every page.

Review Marie-Madeleine Jodin 1741-1790: Actress, Philosophe, and Feminist (Women and Gender in the Early Modern World) / Ashgate Publishing:

The life of Marie-Madeline Jodin offers new pespectives on the world of 18th century women, on the feuds and politics of European court theatres and entailing the discovery of an important, previously unknown, French feminist. Central to Jodin's story is her relationship with Diderot. The friendship between the young actress and the Enlightenment philosopher was recorded in a series of letters written to her by Diderot between 1765 and 1769. Jodin's character strongly emerge from his letters. Other sources reveal her life as one of dramatic contrasts: a devestating upbringing; an agonizing relationship with her father and a love-hate relationship with her mother; an early adult life in the back streets of Paris and its prisons; a brief, successful career in court theatre; a growing participation in the intellectual culture of the emerging Republic of Letters; and, finally, authorship of "Legislative Views for Women". Marie-Madeline Jodin's life provides an insight into the life of the upwardly mobile 18th century woman. It also provides insight into the political and civil marginalization of socially excluded groups, such as Protestants, actors and prostitutes.

Review An Independent Woman: The Life of Lou Henry Hoover / Greenwood Press:

A woman of intelligence and energy, Lou Henry Hoover's talents benefited a large number of cultural and philanthropic organizations, but her distaste for publicity obscured her many achievements until now. By the time her husband reached the White House in 1929, she had already established herself as a woman with high goals. The first woman to earn a university degree in geology, she collaborated with her husband in the translation of a classic book on mining methods. During World War I, she organized assistance for American travelers stranded in Europe, campaigned on behalf of the Commission for the Relief of Belgium, and set up a boarding house in Washington D. C. for young women working in war-related agencies. Lou Hoover served as president of the Girl Scouts during its formative years, organized the Women's Division of the National Amateur Athletic Federation to encourage public participation in sports, and raised money for a number of cultural and philanthropic organizations. As First Lady, she redecorated the White House to make it a suitable residence for a head of state, cataloging its furnishings for posterity. She founded a school for underprivileged Appalachian children and ran a private, unpublicized relief network for Americans suffering under the Great Depression. After leaving the White House, she resumed the volunteer work that remained such a treasured part of her life.

Review The Medici Women: Gender and Power in Renaissance Florence (Women and Gender in the Early Modern World) / Ashgate Publishing:

This title presents a study of the women of the famous Medici family of republican Florence in the 15th and early 16th centuries. Natalie Tomas critically examines the changing contribution of the women in the Medici family to the eventual success of the Medici regime and their exercise of power within it; and contributes to our historical understanding of how women were able to wield power in late medieval and early modern Italy and Europe. Tomas takes a feminist approach that examines the experience of the Medici women within a critical framework of gender analysis, rather than biography. Keeping the historiography to a minimum and explaining all unfamiliar Italian terms, Tomas makes her narrative clear and accessible to non-specialists; thus this book should appeal to scholars of women's studies across disciplines and geographical boundaries.

Appended to the histories is an exhaustive list of pioneers connected with each settlement. The lists are arranged alphabetically by the surname of the original pioneer and yield such critical genealogical data as place of origin, date and place of settlement, occupation, name of wife and names of children, place and date of death, and, in many instances, names of family members in the country of origin.

Review The Song of A Life: Francesco Paolo Tosti (1846-1916) / Ashgate Publishing:

Born in Ortona in 1846, Francesco Paolo Tosti attended the Conservatory at Naples when he was twelve, and went on to become a gifted violinist and teacher as well as achieving fame as a singer and composer. He lived in Rome (1870-1875) as teacher to Princess Margerita of Savoy before moving to London in 1875 where he was singing master to the children of Queen Victoria. Tosti composed and performed throughout this time. He became closely involved with the Ricordi publishing house, who put out all of Tosti's chamber art songs except for a few released by Chappel and Enoch in England, all of which were extremely successful. In all, some 400 works by Tosti were circulated throughout his life and his popularity continued after his death. Tosti knew and was great friends with many of his contemporary performers and composers, such as Victor Maurel, Nelly Melba, Enrico Caruso, Misha Elman, Verdi, Leoncavallo, Hiller, Mascagni and Puccini. He also became acquainted with people from the other arts, including actress Eleonora Duse and the Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, and the Italian painter Francesco Paolo Michetti. Verdi much admired Tosti, and would recommend him to teach singing. It was through Tosti that the likes of Puccini, Leoncavallo and Mascagni came to be known in the most important musical circles in London; the composers' letters testifying to their appreciation. Francesco Sanvitale, the leading Tosti scholar, considers not only the life and career of this fascinating character, but also Tosti's extensive repertoire, and provides an insightful cultural context in which to situate Tosti and evaluate his significance. [+]
The book investigates contemporary reviews and correspondence, and considers the long-lasting public success of Tosti's songs, despite subsequent unwarranted criticism by inter-war Italian musicologists who dismissed many Italian composers in an effort to promote particular types of music to forge a prominent national image. In this way, Sanvitale fills a notable gap in the study of Italian music in the secondo Ottocento, and shows how Tosti's oeuvre continued to be performed in salons, concert halls and later in recording studios, despite the apparent demise of other composers' works in the art song genre.
