Review Déodat de Séverac / Ashgate:

Deodat de Severac (1872-1921) is best known for his piano music but his compositions included orchestral and vocal works, including opera, cantata and incidental music. Claude Debussy described Severac's music as 'exquisite and rich with ideas'. The early works were influenced by Impressionist harmonies, church modes, cyclic techniques, folk-like melodies and Andalusian motives. Severac's style changed dramatically in 1907 when he left Paris and began to include Catalan elements in his compositions - a transition that has hitherto gone unrecognized. Robert Waters provides a much-needed study of the life and works of Severac, focusing on the composer's regionalist philosophy. Severac's engagement with folk music was not a patriotic gesture in the vein of nationalistic composers, but a way of expressing regional identity within France to counter the restrictive styles sanctioned by the Paris Conservatory. His musical philosophy mirrored larger social and political debates regarding anti-centralist positions on education, politics, art and culture in fin de siecle France. Such debates involved political and social leaders whom Severac knew and personally admired, including the writer Maurice Barres and the poet Frederic Mistral. The book will appeal to those specializing in French music, European ethnic musics, piano music and French music history.

Review The Worst Journey in the World: Library Edition / Blackstone Audiobooks:

Cherry-Gerrards classic story of bravery and fortitude, first published in 1922 tells us of Scotts last expedition to the Antarctic from its departure from England in 1910 to its arrival in New Zealand in 1913. It is one of the most famous and tragic in the annals of exploration. As Apsley Cherry-Garrard states in his introduction to the harrowing story of the Scott expedition to the South Pole, "Polar Exploration is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time which has been devised. " Cherry-Garrard's The Worst Journey in the World is a gripping account of an expedition gone disastrously wrong. The youngest member of Scott's team, the author was later part of the rescue party that eventually found the frozen bodies of Scott and three men who had accompanied Scott on the final push to the Pole. These deaths would haunt Cherry-Garrard for the rest of his life as he questioned the decisions he had made and the actions he had taken in the days leading up to the Polar Party's demise. Prior to this sad denouement, Cherry-Garrard's account is filled with details of scientific discovery and anecdotes of human resilience in a harsh environment. Each participant in the Scott expedition is brought fully to life. Cherry-Garrard's recollections are supported by diary excerpts and accounts from other teammates. Despite the sad fate of Scott, the reader will grudgingly agree with the closing words of The Worst Journey in the World: "Exploration is the physical expression of the Intellectual Passion. [+]
And I tell you, if you have the desire for knowledge and the power to give it physical expression, go out and explore. If you march your Winter Journeys you will have your reward, so long as all you want is a penguin's egg. ".

Review Bruce Montgomery/Edmund Crispin: A Life in Music and Books / Ashgate Publishing:

Under his real name, Bruce Montgomery (1921-1978) wrote concert music and the scores for almost 50 feature films, including some of the most enduring British comedies of the twentieth century, amongst them a number in the series started by "Doctor in the House" and the first six "Carry On" films. Under the pseudonym of Edmund Crispin he enjoyed equal success as an author, writing nine highly acclaimed detective novels, a number of short crime stories as well as compiling anthologies of science fiction which helped to increase the profile of the genre. A close friend of both Philip Larkin and Kingsley Amis, Montgomery did much to encourage their work. In this first biography of Montgomery, David Whittle draws on interviews with people who knew the writer and composer, some of whom are sadly no longer with us. These interviews, together with the in-depth research that Whittle has carried out, provide great insight into the development of Montgomery as a crime fiction writer and as a composer in the ever-demanding world of films. During the late 50s and early 60s these demands were to prove too much for Montgomery. Alcoholism combined with the onset of osteoporosis and a retreat into a semi-reclusive lifestyle resulted in him writing and composing virtually nothing during the last 15 years of his life. Whittle examines the reasons for Montgomery's early and rapid decline in this thoroughly researched and engagingly written biography.

Review Louise Bourgeois: Works in Marble : Marmorarbeiten (Art & Design) / Prestel:

A study of the work in marble of sculptor Louise Bourgeois. It includes pieces from the 1960s to the 21st century, and offers the artist's reflections on the medium and its importance to her oeuvre. In her long career Louise Bourgeois has worked in a wide variety of mediums, including latex, wood, plaster and metal. However she returns again and again to marble, a material she "can wrestle with". As this volume reveals, the major themes of Bourgeois' art - childhood, family, the body, sexuality, and innocence - are enhanced by the flesh-like tones and smooth, unforgiving surface of marble. Oscillating continually between abstract figures and organic form, Bourgeois manages to imbue this inert material with emotional intensity, from her mysterious and dramatic large-scale "cell" installations to her seductive and feminine "nature studies".

Review Hugo Wolf: The Vocal Music / Princeton University Press:

In the virtual cottage industry of recent works on fin-de-siecle Vienna, Hugo Wolf (1860-1903) has been somewhat neglected, perhaps because he was the master of a small genre - the late Romantic lied - and never truly made his mark in the larger forms that command greater public attention. But in the realm of song, he is among the greatest inheritors of Schubert and Schumann, one who was both a traditionalist and a modernist. This study examines five aspects of Wolf's compositional art, each exemplifying a different synthesis of traditionalism and modernity and spanning his entire, tragically brief creative life, from his first efforts to his lapse into insanity in 1897. Wolf's youthful imitations of Schumann (a common phenomenon at the time), his genius for comic songs of a kind unlike any of his predecessors, and his part in the ballad revival of the late 19th century are discussed. The author investigates the poetic texts as closely as the music and includes numerous previously unpublished sketches and fragments, examples from songs now long out-of-print and difficult to obtain, and citations from Wolf's vivid letters and other sources of the period.

Review Chopin Through His Contemporaries: Friends, Lovers, and Rivals (Contributions to the Study of Music and Dance) / Greenwood Press:

Dual natures comprised Chopin's personality. On one hand, he was a highly creative romantic idealist and on the other, a realist trying to cope with the world at large. Documentary evidence illustrates the disparities in his personality as a reflection of these two diverse aspects of his psyche. Of special interest are five previously unpublished letters in English and the unfolding of Chopin's controversial relationships with Tytus Woyciechowski, Julian Fontana, George Sand, and Solange Sand. This critical portrayal of Chopin's personality traces his journeys and experiences from Warsaw to Paris and reveals, among other characteristics and traits, Chopin's developmental problems during his adolescence, his unattractive behavior in his relationship with Julian Fontana, and George Sand's unrequited love for Chopin. The culture of the time and the atmosphere surrounding Chopin's relationships emerge in the detailed evidence presented. The book is divided into two parts. The first is relevant to Chopin's youth in Warsaw. His relationship with Tytus Woyciechowski during the formative years in Warsaw significantly impacted Chopin's emotional development. The second part of the book focuses on Chopin's adult years in Paris including his liaison with George Sand, which is considered through her daughter, Solange, and four friends and acquaintances common to both Sand and Chopin. [+]
The text is extensively annotated and this research of Chopin's life and personality will appeal to both the Chopin scholar and enthusiast. It will also be of interest to students of French Romantic literature, Romantic music, and Polish music of the nineteenth century.

Review Thinking Like a Man: Tadano Makuzu (1763-1825) (Brill's Japanese Studies Library) (Brill's Japanese Studies Library) / Brill Academic Publishers:

In her political treatise, Hitori kangae (Solitary Thoughts, 1818), Tadano Makuzu (1763-1825) presents her observations and critiques of the intellectual and socio-political landscapes of the late Tokugawa period (1600-1868). It is especially the (samurai) woman’s perspective that makes Makuzu’s treatise such a rich source of, often implicit, information on the late Tokugawa period (1600-1868). The biographical details of Makuzu’s life and family are given social and historical context in terms of her self-conscious status as a samurai woman. Through close analysis of Makuzu’s philosophical and autobiographical writings, Dr. Gramlich-Oka reveals Makuzu to have been a natural product of the variety of intellectual schools and circles of her time. In extending Makuzu’s unique critique of the intellectual’s lack of concern with women to contemporary intellectual history, the author carves a new path in incorporating gender into intellectual history and biography writing.

Review Gian Francesco Malipiero (1882-1973): The Life, Times and Music of a Wayward Genius (Contemporary Music Studies) / Routledge:

In recent years Gian Francesco Malipiero has been recognised increasingly widely as one of the most original and strangely fascinating Italian composers of the early 20th century. He was the teacher of Maderna and Nono, and was revered by (among many others) Dallapiccola, who even called him "the most important (musical) personality that Italy has had since the death of Verdi". He was also a key figure in the revival of the long- neglected music of Italy's great past, and himself edited what remains the only virtually complete edition of the surviving compositions of Monteverdi. The present book not only provides the first monographic survey of Malipiero's life, times and music to appear in English, but covers the subject more comprehensively than any previous publication in any language. Dr Waterhouse draws on hitherto unpublished documents, and with the help of numerous musical examples, analyses the composer's works, style and idiosyncratic personality.

Review The Clairmont Correspondence: Letters of Claire Clairmont, Charles Clairmont, and Fanny Imlay Godwin, 1808-1879 / The Johns Hopkins University Press:

"You write the most amusing and clever letters in the world. If your letters are ever published, all others that ever were published before will fall in the shade, and you will be looked on as the best letter writer that ever charmed their friends. "-Mary Shelley to Claire Clairmont, 29 November 1842Claire Clairmont embodied English romanticism in her life, her journals, and especially in her letters. As step-daughter of William Godwin, as companion to Shelley and Mary on their elopement, as Shelley's "Constantia," as mother of Byron's Allegra, as a regular member of the Shelley circle (close to Peacock, Leigh Hunt, Hogg, Lady Mount Cashell, and Trelawny), as governess in Russia during the Decembrist Revolution, as confidante of Mary Shelley and Jane Williams in their middle years, and, in her old age, as the inspiration of Henry James's The Aspern Papers, she both lived and recorded the Romantic Revolution. Brought up in the same household as Mary Shelley, dedicated to the principles of Mary Wollstonecraft, Claire was a more enthusiastic feminist than Mary, and her letters on this theme are always arresting, often hilarious. She wrote on the perils of marriage, on the advantages of illegitimacy, and on the forces that press a woman of no fortune into dependency. She resisted these forces, maintaining her independence in the only career open to her-governess and companion-while dreaming of a "society of free women. " This edition presents the texts of all known surviving letters by Claire Clairmont along with those of her brother Charles Clairmont and her stepsister Fanny Imlay Godwin-229 letters in all, of which 183 are published here for the first time complete. [+]
Claire Clairmont's letters, numbering 190, date from 1815, when she was seventeen, to two months before her death in 1879. Charles Clairmont's 32 letters begin with schoolboy notes to Godwin in 1808, when he was thirteen, and conclude in 1849, two months before his death. Fanny Godwin's seven are all from 1816, the year of her suicide at the age of twenty-two. The volumes also include a chronological chart, genealogical tables, appendices, and twenty-eight illustrations. "The role Claire Clairmont played in the lives of Shelley, Mary Shelley, and Byron gives exceptional importance to her letters. Claire Clairmont was an intelligent, discerning-at times self-centered and, towards the latter part of her life, quirky-observer of the life around her. In the letters exchanged between Claire Clairmont and Mary Shelley, as well as in her many letters to Byron and Trelawny, one gathers invaluable first-hand insights into the lives of the extraordinary circle of younger romantics and their era. "-Betty T. Bennett, American University.
