Review A Critical Biography of Lady Jane Wilde 1821?-1896, Irish Revolutionist, Humanist, Scholar and Poet (Women's Studies (Lewiston, N.Y.), V. 34.) / Edwin Mellen Press:

The focus of this study is upon a progressive woman whose broad erudition allowed her to write on a great variety of subjects. Her own life as a revolutionist and writer, and her writings about women should interest those in women's studies. As an Irish nationalist in a movement that had considerable influence on subsequent nationalist leaders like Arthur Griffin, her views in her revolutionary poems and articles are still pertinent.

Review Celibidache / Academy Chicago Publishers:

This multi-media package will appeal to those who like to read as well as those who are fond of film. Furthermore, thanks to Facets Multimedia, the film is available on DVD. The book, entitled Celibidache!, consists of essays and interviews with the composer and musical theorist. The film, produced by his son, is entitled Sergiu Celibidache's Garden and examines the many facets of his relationship to music. Perhaps the most fascinating and perplexing aspect of Celibidache's professional career was his lifelong opposition to the recording of his performances. He was, of course, a provocative and controversial maestro-contentious, impassioned and ingenious. Celibidache, a native of Moldavia in Eastern Rumania, studied music in Bucharest and then in a Berlin conservatory under the tutelage of Heinz Tiessen. He conducted the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for the first time in 1945, while still in his 20s, as most of the established conductors were undergoing de-Nazification. Subsequently he conducted in South America, Scandinavia, France, Germany, and other countries, often working with less prestigious orchestras because of his staunch refusal to allow recording of the music he conducted, though this also allowed him to work through his own unorthodox methods. He also did a good deal of teaching. [+]
Sergiu Celibidache died in 1996. The film features numerous performances of the Maestro conducting pieces composed by Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, the Maestro's beloved Bruckner, and others. Given his longstanding resistance to mechanical reproduction, these performances make the film a unique experience. Celibidache agreed to participate in the film only after constant urging by his son, the director. The film also features numerous sessions of the Maestro instructing young students.

Review Phaidon Press / Der Ring Des Nibelungen (Ring Cycle) Publication date: 1997-10-23
Dewey code: 782.1
List Price: $14.95
Price: $149.94

Review Der Ring Des Nibelungen (Ring Cycle) / Phaidon Press:

Richard Wagner's vast "Der Ring des Nibelungen" cycle comprises four full-length operas ("Das Rheingold", "Die Walkure", "Siegfried" and "Gotterdammerung") and is arguably the most extraordinary achievement in the history of opera. His own libretto to the operas is an intricate system of metric patterns, imaginative metaphors and alliteration, combining to produce the music in text. This companion volume to Sabor's translations of Wagner's librettos offers essays on the meaning of the Ring, on Wagner's turbulent and fascinating life, his varied literary sources from the world of myth, the genesis of the cycle and its performance history over the last 120 years. Sabor's texts provide a line-by-line translation of the final of the opera librettos, a running commentary on the action and signals as to when each leitmotif appears. Each leitmotif is a musical theme or motif which denotes a character, emotion, object or event, and these musical themes were used by Wagner as a unifying force within his dramas. The listener following the opera with the libretto is able to pinpoint the various themes (in the Ring cycle there are 81 leitmotifs) and so increase understanding of the drama. Sabor's translation seeks to preserve the original metre and elucidate the complexities of Wagner's intricate libretto. The volumes are supplemented with scene-by-scene synopses, short discussions of each leitmotif, a discography, videography and bibliography. Translations of the four operas are available, both separately and in a boxed set with this companion volume. The operatic world is full of guides to the psyche and music (not to mention the politics) of Richard Wagner. [+]
Can there possibly be an excuse for publishing another one? Indeed there is, when the insights are as fresh (or as well documented) and thoughtfully assembled as in this new companion to the Ring. Der Ring des Nibelungen: A Companion offers obscure details to lure even the most avid Wagnerite, but is brief and accessible enough to be of use to Wagnerian newcomers as well. Rudolph Sabor's survey of Wagner's life is necessarily brief, but still full of interesting details and insights, while his examination of the sources drawn on by the composer-librettist is extremely helpful. Wagner, who was fond of promoting an image of himself as a Jovian creator-in his mythos, his work supposedly sprang from his head full-blown with no preparation needed, like Athena from the pate of Jupiter-was actually a very careful researcher who used every bit of background he could find in his librettos. Interesting parallels are drawn to other works by Wagner, and there is a short but helpful explanation of what leitmotifs are and how they're used. Der Ring des Nibelungen: A Companion also looks at a number of important productions of the Ring, from the leafy and naturalistic to attempts to force-fit a Marxist interpretation on the mythic work; lists resources for further research; and includes a well-done bibliography and discography with the author's comments on each recording.

Review MY SOUL IS MY OWN CL / Other:

"My Soul is My Own" presents the lives of early 20th-century African-American women in a unique context - their own words. The women themselves are as extraordinary as the language they use to describe their experiences within their families, in the university and subsequently in the work force at a time when academic and professional institutions rejected both women and African-Americans explicitly on the basis of gender and race. Gwendolyn Etter-Lewis, a linguist who specializes in African-American women's spoken and written narratives, offers a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the complex lives of African-American women who dared to cross the threshold of white and dominant professions. Etter-Lewis takes exception to "tradition" and challenges long-held assumptions about the study and interpretation of African-American women's lives and speech patterns. With this multidisciplinary approach, she simultaneously offers an informative and thought-provoking analysis of the content and structure of the narrative texts.

Review Satie the Bohemian: From Cabaret to Concert Hall (Oxford Monographs on Music) / Oxford University Press, USA:

The composer Erik Satie (1866-1925) came of age in the bohemian sub-culture of Montmartre, with its artists' cabarets and cafes-concerts. These colorful milieux decisively shaped his aesthetic priorities and compositional strategies, from the esoteric Gymnopedies of the 1880s to the avant-garde ballets of the 1920s. Whiting makes this radical transvaluation of received artistic values more understandable by placing it in the full context of bohemian Montmartre.
