Review Revisiting New Netherland: Perspectives on Early Dutch America (The Atlantic World Europe, Africa and the Americas, 1500-1830) / Brill Academic Pub:

The essays in this book offer a rich sampling of current scholarship on New Netherland and Dutch colonization in North America. The Introduction explains why the Dutch moment in American history has been overlooked or trivialized and calls attention to signs of the emergence of a new narrative of American beginnings that gives due weight to the imprint of Dutch settlement in America. The essays are organized around six major themes: New Netherland and Historical Memory, New Netherland in the Atlantic World, The Political Economy of New Netherland, New Netherland's Directors: A New Look, Family Research as a key to New Netherland's History, and Writing the History of New Netherland in the Twenty-first Century. This volume holds great interest for historians of early America and of Dutch colonization.

Review William Whewell, Philosopher of Science / Oxford University Press, USA:

Wilhelm Whewell was one on the most prolific and influential writers of early Victorian England. Fisch reconstructs the historical origins of Whewell's two works, History of the Inductive Sciences from the Earliest to the Present Time and Philosophy of the Inductive Sciences Founded upon their History, and evaluates their philosophical claims. In the last part of the book the author gives a critical appraisal of Whewell's mature philosophical position, having first traced the development of his thought. Whewell emerges as the only writer of his generation to have risen fully to the philosophical challenge of the mathematical physics of his day, and to have established in response a theory of science intriguingly akin to the new theories of emergence which were being offered by Lyell and Darwin.

Review Juliette Low and the Girl Scouts / Kessinger Publishing:

1928. The story of an American woman 1860-1927. Found in this volume are various stories and anecdotes of Juliette Low by those who knew her best. It was Juliette Low's love, humor, courage, keenness, common sense and achievement which led to the formation of the Girl Guides, later renamed the Girl Scouts. It is largely thanks to these qualities that one great-hearted woman helped scouting take root and gain the widespread power for good it holds today among the girlhood of America. Handsomely illustrated.

Review Science under Control: The French Academy of Sciences 1795-1914 / Cambridge University Press:

The greatest ambition of any moderately successful nineteenth-century French scientist was to become a member of the Academy of Sciences. Science Under Control is the first major study in any language of this elite institution, in a period that began with such influential figures as Laplace and Cuvier and extended to the time of Louis Pasteur and Henri Poincare. The book attempts to remove the veil of mystery and misunderstanding that has shrouded this key institution and its procedures. The French government exercised political, financial, and bureaucratic control over the Academy, and the Academy in turn sat in judgment over all serious scientific production. Only with its approval could the work of French scientists win acceptance and advance their careers. The book examines the politics of science in a historical context drawing on a wealth of original historical sources. The author argues that the Academy was of importance not only nationally but also internationally, by its influence and by the establishment of certain procedures now considered basic to the organization of modern science. The book therefore provides a case study of carefully regulated scientific production encouraged yet constrained within a system of reports, prizes, and elections. This book will prove to be an invaluable source of information and of discussion on the history, politics, and religion of this intense period in European science.

Review Choosing the Better Part: Anna Maria van Schurman (1607-1678) (International Archives of the History of Ideas / Archives internationales d'histoire des idées) / Springer:

Anna Maria van Schurman was in more than one aspect an unconventional woman in her own lifetime. As a gifted scholar in many foreign and ancient languages, as well as in philosophy and theology, she corresponded with other learned men and women all over Europe. She achieved international renown for her own defence of scholarly activity of women. Life and work of this Dutch femme savante of the 17th Century has thus far been studied by theologians, philosophers, literary scholars, historians, pedagogues and art historians, each concentrating on specific aspects of Van Schurman's biography or work. A rather fragmented image of this scholar was the result. This interdependent collection of essays describes the life and work of Anna Maria van Schurman from an interdisciplinary - or rather multidisciplinary - approach and will outline a more integrated yet at the same time subtly differentiated picture. Nine contributions - from the disciplines of philosophy, theology, Dutch language and literature, intellectual and art history, and women's studies - partly based on new source material, shed light on Van Schurman's ideas on erudition and femininity, ethics and philosophy, as well as on her religious beliefs, within the context of the early modern intellectual community to which she belonged. Audience: This collection of essays will therefore command the interest not only of historians, but also of scholars and students in theology, philosophy, art history, and women's studies.

Review A Shostakovich Companion / Praeger Publishers:

Adopting a "two-books-in-one" format, The Shostakovich Companion combines a full-length, single-author examination of the life and compositional evolution of the Soviet Union's most famous composer; and a symposium in which a variety of analytical techniques is applied to selected Shostakovich works and genres. This is the first comprehensive English-language book in twenty-five years in which the primary emphasis is on musical issues, and the secondary emphasis is on the biographical and much-debated political issues. The Companion is divided into four parts. Part I considers the hermeneutic techniques that have been applied to Shostakovich's music, along with the various controversies surrounding his life and his relationship to Soviet politics. Part II comprises the book's central life-and-works discussion, uniting a comprehensive examination of Shostakovich's compositional evolution with a full account of his life. Coming from a variety of authors, the chapters in Part III demonstrate a cross-section of analytical techniques that may usefully be brought to bear upon Shostakovich's music. These range from literary and cinematically-based methods to the more traditional types of musical analysis. Part IV considers three independent but crucial aspects of Shostakovich's life: his contributions to the Soviet film industry, his career as a pianist, and his legacy and influence as a teacher.

Review Peter Sculthorpe: A Bio-Bibliography (Bio-Bibliographies in Music) / Greenwood Press:

Sculthorpe is one of Australia's most prominent composers and is among the most important composers on the international scene. Although he is a distinguished academic and popular lecturer, Sculthorpe does not fit any ready-made category of composer or teacher. In a body of work that so far includes orchestral and chamber music in many genres and mediums, opera and other theater music, songs and choral music, and music for documentary and commercial films, radio, and television, he has established a personal musical style and public presence that have shaped the history of 20th-century music in Australia and the world. Owing to circumstances of place and time-Australia in the 20th century-he has been defining, or redefining, the role of composer for himself and his audiences. This book is a record of Sculthorpe's work and of its reception by composer colleagues, performers, critics, and audiences.
