Dewey code: 920
Price: $18.00

Review Unconventional Wisdom / Creative Arts Book Company:

An enlightening first-person account that dispels any number of myths concerning the disabled, while encouraging others to seek fulfillment in unexpected places. The daughter of renowned composer Alan Hovhaness, Jean Nandi grew up without the shadow of disability until the age of twenty, when symptoms of muscle weakness and pain marked the beginning of a slowly progressive disability. In the face of steadily increasing pressures brought on by extensive medical treatments, Nandi would spend time travelling abroad. Trained as a biologist, she began her professional life with a scientific career, wending her way through several careers, marriage to an East Indian scientist, and pursuit of her first love, music. When she was no longer able to perform or teach, she became an author and then publisher of books on harpsichord playing and teaching. "Coming out" as a person with a disability, Jean Nandi began honing her skills in the area of disability advocacy during the nineties, leading both a county and then a city commission. She developed successfulgrass-roots organizations devoted to improving accessibility and health care for people with disabilities.

Review New South Wales University Press / The Indomitable Miss Pink: A Life in Anthropology Publication date: 2002-03
Dewey code: 920
Price: $32.95

Review The Indomitable Miss Pink: A Life in Anthropology / New South Wales University Press:

Olive Pink (1884-1975) was an unconventional anthropologist, an advocate of Aboriginal rights and an early proponent of the cultivation of Australian indigenous plants. - Born in Hobart, she moved to Sydney in 1914 and travelled extensively in central Australia, lived in remote areas with the Arrernte and Warlpiri people, and caused controversy within the anthropological profession. - Olive Pink's political activism brought her into conflict with missionaries, pastoralists and her anthropological colleagues, while her sustained letter-writing campaigns made her the scourge of the public servants and administrators responsible for the well-being of Aboriginal people. - A willowy woman always dressed in Edwardian white, she lived alone after the death of her mother, choosing an independent life rather than marriage. - Her critical political opinions and forthright tongue could never sit easily within the restrictive requirements of marriage. - Those opinions and her resolute and rigid moral beliefs meant that some of her most respected and liked colleagues and friends failed to meet her standards. - But she made and kept many friends, her laughter and humour seeing her through the later years of penury and hardship in Alice Springs. - "She still haunts Alice Springs," writes the author, "an observant, elusive, ghostly presence. " - Drawing on hundreds of letters and thousands of pages of diaries and notes, Dr Marcus tests the legends and the contemporary assessments of "Miss Pink" against a range of sources and informants. - She traces Olive Pink's life and untangles how she is remembered and mythologised by Australia's Aboriginal and white communities.

Review Faithful To His Call / Moore Inspirational Publishing:

Faithful to His Call is the story of how a young woman, her husband, and her children came to carry out the purpose that God had for them. Terry Marr felt the presence of God from an early age. She knew that the Lord had a plan for her life, and she strove to be alert to His messages and to be ready when He called. Terry Marr's relationship with God is an intensely personal and dynamic one. In turn, she has ministered to others in the same loving and personal way. As her husband and pastor, L. C. Marr, Jr. says, “This is a book about the birthing of a relationship with God, about visions and the gifts of the Holy Spirit, but mostly it's about recognizing and appreciating the presence of God. ”.

Review Hodder & Stoughton / Simone De Beauvoir's the Second Sex (Beginner's Guide) Publication date: 2002-02
Dewey code: 920
Price: $11.99

Review Simone De Beauvoir's the Second Sex (Beginner's Guide) / Hodder & Stoughton:

Since its appearance in 1949, Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex has been a central text of feminist thought and the wider feminist movement. Always controversial, this book has arguably exercised more personal and plitical influence than any other work. Yet for all its direct impact, the book's arguments are elaborate and often difficult, and its range is immense. Its philosophical and historical origins are complex, and its literary and intellectual methods are subtle.

Review A History of Women Philosophers - Volume IV: Contemporary Women Philosophers, / Springer:

Like their predecessors, and like their male counterparts, most women philosophers of the 20th century have significant expertise in several specialities. Moreover, their work represents the gamut of 20th century philosophy's interests in moral pragmatism, logical positivism, philosophy of mathematics, of psychology, and of mind. Their writings include feminist philosophy, classical moral theory reevaluated in light of Kant, Mill, and the 19th century feminist and abolitionist movements, and issues in logic and perception. Included in the fourth volume of the series are discussions of L. Susan Stebbing, Edith Stein, Hedwig Conrad Martius, Simone de Beauvoir, Simone Weil, Mary Whiton Calkins, Gerda Walther, and others. While pre-20th century women philosophers were usually self-educated, those of the 20th century had greater access to academic preparation in philosophy. Yet, for all the advances made by women philosophers over two and a half millennia, the philosophers discussed in this volume were sometimes excluded from full participation in academic life, and sometimes denied full professional academic status.

Review Baring My Soul / Backyard Enterprises:

Baring My Soul, the highly acclaimed and anticipated memoir featuring new and selected poems by Stacey James McAdoo, has been described as a powerful, no-nonsense and controversial body of poetry and prose. Praised for it’s vivid descriptions and realistic dialogue, this revealing sociological study is written in a “conversational, matter-of-fact, this is how it is” tone wherein McAdoo, through a loud & consistent/ strong & controlled/ you can’t put me in a box and shut me up/ voice emerges, in the manner of Ida B. Wells, as a critical thinker by providing a provocative exploration of various issues that plague the Black community. In an honest, engrossing and emotional recount of McAdoo’s life experiences, topics on love, marriage, sex, fighting addictions, selling drugs, mental illness, race relations and white privilege are addressed. While this is a super-serious book, it is also filled with moments of humor that give way to outburst of laughter. But more than anything else, what makes it exceptional is its honesty. McAdoo’s strength and courage to openly discuss so many interpersonal topics in this beautifully written social commentary truly serves as a source of inspiration.

She graces us with her wisdom; she teaches through her own example. This is the Frances Lief Neer we've all come to know and love. At last, Ms. Neer unveils the rest of her story. Fearless throughout her long and triumphantly full life, Ms. Neer transports readers from the Rockaway of her youth to her San Francisco of today. Through her still passionate point of view, her exceptional sense of humor and timing, the author reveals herself: highly motivated, never downtrodden, and as vibrant and vital today as ever.
