Review Biomedicine in the Twentieth Century: Practices, Policies, and Politics: (Biomedical and Health Research) (Biomedical and Health Research) / IOS Press:

Biomedicine in the Twentieth Century: Practices, Policies, and Politics is a testimony to the growing interest of scholars in the development of the biomedical sciences in the twentieth century and to the number of historians, social scientists and health policy analysts now working on the subject. The book is comprised of essays by noted historians and social scientists that offer insights on a range of subjects that should be a significant stimulus for further historical investigation. It details the NIH's practices, policies and politics on a variety of fronts, including the development of the intramural program, the National Institute of Mental Health and mental health policy, the politics and funding of heart transplantation and the initial focus of the National Cancer Institute. Comparisons can be made with the development of other American and British institutions involved in medical research, such as the Rockefeller Institute and the Medical Research Council. Discussions of the larger scientific and social context of United States federal support for research, the role of lay institutions in federal funding of virus research, the consequences of technology transfer and patenting, the effects of vaccine and drug development and the environment of research discoveries all offer new insights and suggest questions for further exploration.

Review John Wiley & Sons / Regulation of Body Weight: Biological and Behavioral Mechanisms Creator: G. A. Bray
Publication date: 1996-06-05
Dewey code: 612.39
List Price: $235.00
Price: $235.00

Review Regulation of Body Weight: Biological and Behavioral Mechanisms / John Wiley & Sons:

The fact that about 30-400f the adults in the Western world are overweight or obese testifies to the frequency of the disturbances in body weight regulation. Scientists have established that caloric intake, macronutrient composition of the diet, basal and resting metabolic rate, thermic response to food, energy expenditure associated with movement and physical activity, and preferential storage of the surplus of calories as fat or lean tissues are critical determinants of energy balance and body weight. While much has been learned, the field is poised for major advances with the advent of a variety of imaging techniques, progress in quantitative and molecular genetics, use of transgenic rodent models and of breeding experiments with informative inbred strains, availability of stable isotopes for metabolic and behavioral studies, and a growing number of useful experimental animal and human models. This volume takes an integrative approach to obesity. It is structured around four major topics: (1) the animal and human models currently available for the study of body weight regulation with their strengths and limitations, (2) the molecular and genetic basis of the regulation of body weight, (3) the metabolic and physiological mechanisms involved, and (4) the behavioral and social determinants. The 13 background papers provide a critical overview of the present knowledge base while the group reports summarize the extensive deliberations of 38 international experts. Particular emphasis has been given to promising research areas and on the advances needed to ensure a better understanding of the biological and behavioral mechanisms of the regulation of body weight, with a particular emphasis on overweight and obesity.

Review Ethylene: Agricultural Sources and Applications / Springer:

This revolutionary book examines the biochemistry of endogenous ethylene biosynthesis and its role in the physiology of higher plants. Never before has such comprehensive attention been given to soil microbiota and their potential exogenous source of ethylene. This book provides chapters examining ethylene as a hormone, its role in plant physiology, sources and factors affecting microbial production of ethylene, and biochemistry of ethylene production by microorganisms. It also considers ethylene production in soil, the role of ethylene in symbiosis and pathogenesis, and its commercial application in agriculture. This book is extremely valuable in that it covers all aspects of ethylene sources, in-depth biochemistry and applications.

Review Paracelsus: The Man and His Reputation : His Ideas and Their Transformation (Studies in the History of Christian Thought, Vol 85) (Studies in the History of Christian Thought, Vol 85) / Brill Academic Publishers:

Despite his fame Paracelsus remains an illusive character. As this volume points out it is somewhat of a paradox that the interest with Paracelsus and his ideas has remained so widespread when one considers that it is far from clear what exactly he contributed to medicine and natural philosophy. But perhaps it is exactly this enigma which through the ages has made Paracelsus so attractive to such a variety of people who all want to claim him as an advocate for their particular ideas. The first section of the book deals with the historiography surrounding Paracelsus and Paraclesianism and points to the need of reclaiming the man and his ideas in their proper historical context. A further two sections are Paracelsianism and its medical and natural philosophical significance respectively.
