Review The Entrepreneurial Process: Economic Growth, Men, Women, and Minorities / Quorum Books:Entrepreneurship is an extremely important, but little understood, component of the U. S. economy. This book aids that understanding by exploring the challenges and outcomes of the start-up phases of new firms. This is the first detailed, large-scale, longitudinally-based analysis of the entrepreneurial process. Three representative samples of new firms and two representative samples of nascent entrepreneurs (those attempting to start new firms) are used to consider a variety of factors that affect successful completion of the major transitions in the life of new businesses: conception, birth, and early development (survival and growth). Surprisingly, a substantial minority of start-ups become operational new firms. Among the many lessons the authors learn are that although new firm growth appears to reflect many factors, initial size is of special consequence. Not only are many general insights for entrepreneurs revealed, but the authors also pay special attention to the involvement of women and minorities in entrepreneurship and suggest effective government policy for different stages in the entrepreneurial process.

Review A Psychological Typology of Successful Entrepreneurs / Quorum Books:Can psychological factors effectively predict entrepreneurial performance? Drawing upon studies of over 700 entrepreneurial subjects in 10 different samples, Miner settles the issue: yes, they can. He identifies four kinds of people who are capable of achieving entrepreneurial success-but notes that to actually achieve success, they must follow a career route that fits their personalities. Miner's new book is thus a detailed scholarly report on an extensive 20-year research program that focuses on psychological predictors of entrepreneurial activity and success, and a carefully devised, solidly grounded theory to explain why his observations are true. He also discusses the implications for personal career development, entrepreneur selection, entrepreneurship development programs, the assessment of entrepreneurial talent, and related topics crucial not only to entrepreneurs and would-be entrepreneurs themselves, but to their various stakeholders including those with investments in them.

Review Creating Sustainable Work Systems: Emerging Perspectives and Practice / Routledge:Current trends reveal that the increasing intensity at work has major consequences at individual, organizational and societal levels. The balance between intensive and sustainable work must be achieved, yet there are no guiding models, theories or examples on how this can be realized. Creating Sustainable Work Systems: Emerging Perspectives & Practice explores the development of sustainable work systems by analysing intensity problems and providing the basis for designing and implementing sustainable solutions. The increased intensity of work is not only claiming a human toll but is also having an adverse effect on the quality of operations and business. New organizational approaches to work are needed and these 'sustainable work systems' are based on the idea of regeneration and development of human and social resources. This book sheds light on the emerging work systems and describes the existing problems and paradoxes. The researchers, from various academic disciplines and institutions in the US and Europe, consider the existing possibilities and emerging solutions and explore some alternatives to intensive work systems.

Review Institutional Ownership and Multinational Firms: Relationships to Social and Environmental Performance (Transnational Business Andcorporate Culture: Problems and Opportunities) / Routledge:This study represents a rare empirical test of the assertions of critics of multinational corporations (MNCs), who argue that firm-level social and environmental performance suffers as MNCs grow increasingly mobile and subject to the short-term financial demands of institutional investors. Such critics argue that 'footloose' and 'stateless' MNCs have not only divorced themselves from a particular sense of responsibility to their home countries, but have also fallen increasingly under the sway of the 'myopic' demands of institutional investors. Using multiple regression analysis, the study considered the impact of various levels of multinationality and institutional ownership on the social and environmental performance of US-based manufacturing companies. Based on this empirical analysis, the "radical critique" of MNCs was not supported. Rather, the level of multinationality of firms was positively associated with social and environmental performance in the home country. This is a far cry from the demonized view of MNCs proffered by the critics. These findings suggest the possibility that MNCs may even have a positive influence on the development of a global economy that is consistent with the values and intent of vision of sustainable development. Ultimately, the study suggest that at a minimum, more attention should be paid to utilizing talents and competencies of MNCs in support of furthering positive social and environmental agendas. (Ph.
