Review Springer / Knowledge Management Systems: Information and Communication Technologies for Knowledge Management Publication date: 2002-04
Dewey code: 005.74
Price: $93.00

Review Knowledge Management Systems: Information and Communication Technologies for Knowledge Management / Springer:

Information and knowledge have fundamentally transformed the way business and social institutions work. Knowledge management promises concepts and instruments that help organizations to provide an environment supportive of knowledge generation, sharing and application. Information and communication technology (ICT) is often regarded as the enabler for the effective and especially the efficient implementation of knowledge management. The book presents an almost encyclopedic treatise of the many important facets, concepts and theories that have influenced knowledge management and integrates them into a general knowledge management framework consisting of strategy, organization, systems and economics. The book also contains the state of practice of knowledge management on the basis of a comprehensive empirical study, and concludes with four scenarios of the successful application of ICT in knowledge management initiatives.

Review Routledge / Management Aptitude of Entrepreneurs (Studies in Entrepreneurship) Edition: 1
Publication date: 1999-12-06
Dewey code: 658.409
List Price: $160.00
Price: $133.10

Review Management Aptitude of Entrepreneurs (Studies in Entrepreneurship) / Routledge:

The basic problems investigated in this book arose from the author's speculation that many individuals who have what it takes to be an entrepreneur may simply not have what it takes to be an effective manager. In fact, some of the characteristics that are essential to the entrepreneurial drive may be detrimental to the development of solid management skills. This may be one reason that so many entrepreneurs fail in business- Certain elements in their personality make-up may actually prevent them from being, or even becoming, good managers. The overall objective of the study was to learn if there is a significant relationship between entrepreneurs and professional managers in terms of their basic aptitudes toward managing. The research was carried out by examining a number of the most important underpinning psychosocial aspects that have been demonstrated as valid predictors of management performance.

Review Doing Management Research: A Comprehensive Guide / Sage Publications Ltd:

Doing Management Research provides answers to questions and problems which researchers invariably encounter when embarking on management research, be it quantitative or qualitative. The book carefully guides the reader through the research process from beginning to end, first explaining how to identify and formulate a research problem, how to define what to investigate, and decide on the most effective process to employ, then enabling the reader to acquire and build upon empirical evidence, and to decide what tools to use to understand and describe what is being observed and which methods of analysis can be best adopted. Finally, the book dedicates a section to writing up and communicating the research findings. Doing Management Research results from the experience of a large group of researchers who have all had to address the different issues raised when undertaking management research. It is anchored in real methodological problems which researchers face when doing their research. Written in an accessible and easy-to-use style, this book can be read from cover to cover or dipped into, to clarify particular issues during the research process. Primarily aimed at doctoral students, Doing Management Research is also a useful reference for more senior researchers who are looking for answers to epistemological or methodological problems. Author//Editor Description: Raymond Alain Thietart is Professor of Strategy and Management at the University of Paris-Dauphine, and affiliate professor at Essec Business School, France.

Review European Works Councils: Negotiated Europeanisation : Between Statutory Framework and Social Dynamics / Ashgate Publishing:

This study is rooted in an analysis of the establishment of EWCs under Articles 5 and 6 of the 1994 EWC Directive. This is now a mandatory procedure and completes the development of EWCs from bodies set up purely by voluntary negotiation to bodies set up within a binding statutory procedure. The study is based on cases of five (named) major European firms in a variety of industrial sectors. As well as a detailed consideration of how negotiations using the mandatory procedure took place, there are more general reflections on the "quality" of the actors involved, the negotiating process and the outcomes. As well as their analytical value, these observations offer a number of practical pointers on the establishment of information and consultation arrangements internationally. The study also asks why EWCs have been set up in only one third of eligible companies and why the pace of establishing new EWCs slowed after the mandatory procedure came into force in September 1996. This part of the study is based upon a pan-European questionnaire and offers the first empirical findings on this issue. This study is of both academic and practical interest, particularly in view of the continuing process of change in this area, exemplified in new Directives on the European Company Statute and information and consultation at national level.

Review International Water Treaties: Negotiation and Cooperation Along Transboundary Rivers (Routledge Studies in the Modern World Economy) / Routledge:

As demand for fresh water rises, together with population, water scarcity already features on the national security agenda of many countries. In this book, Dinardevelops a theory to explain solutions to property rights conflicts over shared rivers. Through systematic analysis of available treaty texts, corresponding side-payment and cost-sharing patterns are gleaned. Geographic and economic variables are used to explain recurring property rights outcomes. Rather than focusing on a specific river or particular geographic region, the book analyzes numerous rivers, dictated by the large number of treaty observations, and is able to test several hypotheses, devising general conclusions about the manner in which states resolve their water disputes. Policy implications are thereby also gained. While the book simultaneously considers conflict and cooperation along international rivers, it is the focus on negotiated agreements, and their embodied side-payment and cost-sharing regimes, that justifies the use of particular independent variables.

Review Human Factors in Product Design: Current Practice and Future Trends / CRC:

Manufacturers are becoming more aware of human factors in product design as a major competitive issue. In many product areas, manufacturers have reached a technology ceiling, which simply means that it is increasingly difficult to get ahead of the competition in terms of, for example, functionality, technical reliability or manufacturing costs. As a consequence, design has become a major battleground for manufacturers, and usability is recognized as being a central tenet of good design. This book provides a unique snapshot of current practice in human factors, identifying methods and techniques that work well under tight constraints and providing case study evidence of their effectiveness. The commercial implications of usability are discussed, and special attention is paid to two key trends: inclusive design and smart products. Inclusive design is about meeting the needs of all users with one design, which includes the elderly and the disabled. Smart products are multi-functional products with electronic interfaces containing a vast array of "helpful" functions. Industrial designers and manufacturing executives will find this text enlightening.

Review High Tech Entrepreneurship / Routledge:

High-tech businesses form a crucial part of entrepreneurial activity in some ways representing very typical examples of entrepreneurship, yet in some ways representing quite different challenges. The uncertainty in innovation and advanced technology makes it difficult to use conventional economic planning models, and also means that the management skills used in this area must be more responsive to issues of risk, uncertainty and evaluation than in conventional business opportunities. While entrepreneurial courses do reflect the importance of high-tech businesses, they often lack the resources needed to teach this in a way that goes beyond standard how to start up a business courses whilst not focusing solely on theoretical models. This book specifically focuses on the mix of theory and practice needed to accurately inform students. Key topics covered include:* uncertainty and innovation* entrepreneurial finance* marketing technological innovations* high-tech incubation management. Including case studies to give practical insights into genuine business examples, this comprehensive book has a distinctly real-world focus throughout. Edited by a multi-national team, it draws together leading writers and researchers from across Europe, and is therefore a must-read for all those involved in advanced entrepreneurship with specific interests in high-tech start-ups.

Dewey code: 330.092
List Price: $140.00

Review Schumpeter's Market: Enterprise and Evolution / Edward Elgar Publishing:

Schumpeter was an interdisciplinary political ecnomist who made institutional transformation the centrepiece of his theory of supply and demand. This comprehensive monograph reconstructs and assesses Schumpeter's contribution to the restless economics of entrepeneurship, disequilibrium and search. Examining the evidence from all Schumpeter's published work, the book aims to fill a gap in the literature of economic thought. Partly because Schumpeter was so prolific, partly because he touched on so many inter-related topics, there have been few books that have sought to span the whole of this author's insights.

The papers in this volume were presented in May 2000, at a conference held at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. The purpose of the conference was to explore individual motivation and sensemaking in the context of group membership. This volume presents the papers discussed at that conference, and brings attention to the problem of understanding how group members understand their own experience in their groups. In creating both individual and shared understandings of group membership, group members reflect on their participation in the group, the group process, group outcomes, the group itself, and the organization in which the group is embedded. The papers in this volume address a variety of topics including the use of methods from phenomenological psychology; how individuals choose which groups to join, and how they develop a sense that they belong to one or another group; groups' orientations toward learning, pacing, and time.

Review Quorum Books / Marketing and Entrepreneurship: Research Ideas and Opportunities Creator: Gerald E. Hills
Publication date: 1994-09-30
Dewey code: 658.8
Price: $119.95

Review Marketing and Entrepreneurship: Research Ideas and Opportunities / Quorum Books:

A spirit of entrepreneurship encompassed the conception and birth of this volume because it addresses a new, and critically important, subject area. The marketing discipline has until recently largely ignored entrepreneurship and new ventures. The growing entrepreneurship field has also devoted little attention to marketing. This is the first scholarly book to discuss and conceptualize the interface between marketing and entrepreneurship and to provide numerous research opportunities on truly important issues. At a time when the marketing discipline is increasingly criticized for too little attention to important topics, this book offers a path for the researcher who wants to make a major impact. This is a pioneering book and it is hoped that it will one day be viewed as a classic contribution to marketing and to entrepreneurship thought. Although there is considerable new knowledge in this volume, the primary focus is on questions, issues and variables that should stimulate added creativity. For the scholar, the sifting and sorting will be fruitful. The contents of this volume will be of value to the reader in search of ideas, concepts and research directions pertaining to marketing in new and/or growing ventures. The authors are leading scholars in the marketing and management disciplines. [+]
The book begins with a rich collection of five articles on the nature of entrepreneurship and its relationship to marketing. This may be the single best array of definitional perspectives ever written, in part because leading contributors to the debate have returned to the task. The second section focuses on market opportunity, but rather than only looking at market analysis and idea screening, there is also ground breaking work regarding entrepreneurial opportunity identification and opportunity recognition. Marketing strategy and each of the marketing mix areas are addressed in separate chapters with particular attention to the uniquenesses of marketing in new enterprises as compared to mature, larger firms. The final section of the book may be the most intriguing, with attention to entrepreneurship in international markets and lesser developed countries, as well as the role of new and smaller enterprises in job generation. The audiences for this book include marketing, management and entrepreneurship professors, PhD candidates, public policy makers, intellectually curious business owners and others.
