Review The International Sugar Trade / Wiley:

Once considered a rare and exotic sweetener, sugar was not always as widely available or important as it is today. As part of the human diet for nearly all of recorded history, sugar has evolved over time, becoming quite a common commodity. Yet the very simplicity of this common sweetener masks the highly complex and elaborate global trade that has developed around it. Now, The International Sugar Trade offers the only comprehensive reference guide to the worldwide market. A sweeping analysis of the entire sugar industry, it covers everything from the product's historical beginnings to the complex geopolitical and financial forces that have dominated the worldwide sugar trade during recent decades. Over the past fifty years, especially, the international trade in sugar has changed dramatically. Since it is either imported or exported by every country on earth, sugar has become an integral component of the economic relationships among nations. Because of that unique position, the trade in sugar has both reflected—and been affected by—a wide range of divergent forces, including global politics, health consciousness, the emergence of developing nations as suppliers and consumers, and many others. Perhaps the greatest change in the international sugar trade has been the trend toward price stabilization. Historically at the mercy of everything from war to weather, the price of sugar has always been extremely volatile. [+]
But, following such trends as the development of sugar substitutes, an overall decline in per capita consumption, and an increase in the overall amount of sugar on the open market, the price of sugar has leveled off considerably. This comparatively recent stability has profoundly altered the manner in which sugar is traded on the world market, and while this has created new opportunities to profit in sugar, it has also made trading in sugar commodities more complex than ever before. In this important new reference, A. C. Hannah and Donald Spence explore the broad scope of the entire sugar market, providing an essential global tour of the international sugar trade in all its intricacy. Everything is here, from cultivation and refinement to importing and exporting, from commodity trading and tariffs to substitutes and consumption. The International Sugar Trade provides comprehensive coverage of: The history of sugar—from cultivation and refining to end use Trends in world production, consumption, and international trade Crucial information on export marketing, contracts, trade, and prices The policies of the world's major sugar producers—with particular attention focused on likely developments in Eastern Europe, Asia, and Cuba The impact of existing sugar substitutes and those under development The sugar trade cycle and marketing chain, descriptions of key players, and detailed coverage of the sugar futures markets. The International Sugar Trade contains the most essential and up-to-date information currently available. It includes numerous tables and graphs describing production, consumption, and trade for nearly every country. It also includes five complete appendices exploring sugar and the environment; sugar and health; the Brazilian Alcohol Programme; international sugar agreements; and historical statistics covering the period from 1955 to 1994. It is a vital resource for anyone involved in the international sugar trade. "[The International Sugar Trade] is a comprehensive account of sugar, the commodity. [It] is aimed at a wide audience, from specialists looking for more background to traders coming to sugar for the first time, students, nonspecialists, and laymen in search of an introduction to the fascinating world of sugar. "—from the Preface. The only complete guide to sugar, one of the world's most important and heavily traded soft commodities, this authoritative overview provides in-depth coverage of a wide range of essential topics, including: Origins, background, and production The world sugar economy today The sugar futures markets International sugar agreements Consumption trends of substitute products Key issues for the future.

Review Work, Female Empowerment and Economic Development (Routledge Studies in Development Economics) / Routledge:

Accumulation of assets to enable the diversification of activities has been established as crucial in helping the rural poor escape poverty. The empowerment of women has been identified as a way to overcome inefficiencies in the allocation of resources within the family and so improve agrarian households' productivity. However, achieving diversification is not necessarily empowering for women and some initiatives may worsen their position. This book uses the information collected in original household surveys conducted in rural areas in four countries to investigate the links between women's position in the household, diversification strategies, labour market participation and poverty reduction. The book centres on country-specific chapters that provide an in-depth focus on an issue of relevance to the location and that tease out the interplay between female empowerment and development in that context. In particular, the chapters examine:Landlessness in EthiopiaFeminization of the agricultural labour market in Andhra Pradesh, IndiaFemale labour supply and women's power within the household in UgandaDisadvantages faced by female-headed households in ZimbabweThe analysis calls for caution in assuming that labour market expansion necessarily acts to empower women and emphasizes the role female access to assets can have in facilitating diversification and escaping poverty. It will appeal to all those studying development economics, with particular interest in areas such as diversification, poverty and female empowerment.

Review The Boundaries of the Firm: Critiques, Strategies and Policies / Palgrave Macmillan:

Based on original research, Neil Kay explains how the nature of the firm, strategies adopted by the firm, and policies formulated by the government to cope with competitive threat posed by the growth of the modern corporation are all closely related. The first section provides critiques of the firm seen from four different angles-transaction costs, innovation, surprise and trust; the second section looks at four major aspects of corporate strategy-R&D, multinational enterprise, diversification and joint venture; and the book concludes with a look at implications for European competition policy.

Review Risk Analysis: Foundations, Models and Methods (International Series in Operations Research & Management Science) / Springer:

Risk Analysis: Foundations, Models, and Methods fully addresses the questions of "What is health risk analysis?" and "How can its potentialities be developed to be most valuable to public health decision-makers and other health risk managers?" Risk analysis provides methods and principles for answering these questions. It is divided into methods for assessing, communicating, and managing health risks. Risk assessment quantitatively estimates the health risks to individuals and to groups from hazardous exposures and from the decisions or activities that create them. It applies specialized models and methods to quantify likely exposures and their resulting health risks. Its goal is to produce information to improve decisions. It does this by relating alternative decisions to their probable consequences and by identifying those decisions that make preferred outcomes more likely. Health risk assessment draws on explicit engineering, biomathematical, and statistical consequence models to describe or simulate the causal relations between actions and their probable effects on health. Risk communication characterizes and presents information about health risks and uncertainties to decision-makers and stakeholders. Risk management applies principles for choosing among alternative decision alternatives or actions that affect exposure, health risks, or their consequences.

Review Career Choice in Management and Entrepreneurship: A Research Companion / Edward Elgar Publishing:

Although a large and steadily growing research literature attests to an interest in management and entrepreneurship, little research has focused on comparative assessment of the career choices and trajectories of managers and entrepreneurs. This timely book fills the gap by presenting an assessment of early influences on the career choice of managers and entrepreneurs, their attitudes at the start of their careers as students, and in their later employment experiences. The distinguished group of contributors also examine the influence of an MBA education on the later work and life experiences of managers and entrepreneurs. The extent to which this sought after degree aids achievement of intended careers is investigated, as is the debate on linkages between career choices, cross cultural issues, and international and interdisciplinary perspectives.

Review African American Economic Development and Small Business Ownership (Studies in Entrepreneurship) / Routledge:

Starting with the traditions of African American economic systems perpetuated during and after slavery to create their own institutions and enterprises, this study also reviews contemporary major policy initiatives intended to promote African American business ownership. The author uses both qualitative and quantitative research methods to examine the topic and to debunk the myth that African Americans do not have a history of entrepreneurship. The quantitative research in this book is unique in that it provides a detailed analysis of national samples of African American owned and white-owned businesses by industry and region. These industries include professional services; finance, insurance and real estate; manufacturing; and wholesaling. Characteristics of these firms and their owners are assessed to determine which ones are related to business survival. The study finds that the two key factors for achieving business success in African American-owned firms in these industries are the amount of the initial financial investment and the fact that the owner has graduated from college. For white-owned firms, the only factor that was found to be consistently important was start-up capital. Finally, the book sets forth recommendations for policymakers based on the findings of this study and on a comprehensive understanding of the history and dynamics of African American enterprises.

Review International Debt Relief (Routledge Studies in Development Economics) / Routledge:

International debt relief continues to be a highly controversial subject. Although many heavily indebted poor countries have received large amounts of debt relief over the past quarter of a century, it doesn’t appear to be enough. This book examines the impact of international debt relief efforts since 1990. It assesses whether the various debt relief modalities have enhanced economic growth in eight highly indebted countries in Latin America and Africa. The book includes eight country studies, four from Latin America and four from Africa, a literature survey, econometric study and a study of the debt relief policies. Showing that the basic weaknesses of the international aid and debt system revealed by the study have still not been solved, the author draws on her years of experience to suggest ways of moving forward.

Review Entrepreneurship in the Global Firm: Enterprise and Renewal (SAGE Strategy series) / Sage Publications Ltd:

Much current literature on globalization and competition focuses on the external environment in which firms operate. Julian Birkinshaw's book looks within international firms at the dynamics that affect their growth and position. Are local managers seizing power from the centre? Is `glocialization' the inevitable result of globalization? Based on fresh case evidence gathered in Europe and North America, the findings in this book about multi-national firms and managers make a significant contribution to some of the key debates on the transfer of knowledge in firms; the resource-based view; and the network forms of organization. The initiatives of local managers reflect local knowledge, skills and resources and at the same time impact of the distribution of power in the wider organization. By taking as his perspective that of the subsidiary manager operating in a network, Julian Birkinshaw extends the implications of his findings to all managers in organizations and challenges those who still view organizations as hierarchies.

Review Multicriterion Decision in Management - Principles and Practice (INTERNATIONAL SERIES IN OPERATIONS RESEARCH AND) (International Series in Operations Research & Management Science) / Springer:

Multicriterion Decision in Management: Principles and Practice is the first multicriterion analysis book devoted exclusively to discrete multicriterion decision making. Typically, multicriterion analysis is used in two distinct frameworks: Firstly, there is multiple criteria linear programming, which is an extension of the results of linear programming and its associated algorithms. Secondly, there is discrete multicriterion decision making, which is concerned with choices among a finite number of possible alternatives such as projects, investments, decisions, etc. This is the focus of this book. The book concentrates on the basic principles in the domain of discrete multicriterion analysis, and examines each of these principles in terms of their properties and their implications. In multicriterion decision analysis, any optimum in the strict sense of the term does not exist. Rather, multicriterion decision making utilizes tools, methods, and thinking to examine several solutions, each having their advantages and disadvantages, depending on one's point of view. Actually, various methods exist for reaching a good choice in a multicriterion setting and even a complete ranking of the alternatives. The book describes and compares these methods, so-called `aggregation methods', with their advantages and their shortcomings. Clearly, organizations are becoming more complex, and it is becoming harder and harder to disregard complexity of points of view, motivations, and objectives. [+]
The day of the single objective (profit, social environment, etc. ) is over and the wishes of all those involved in all their diversity must be taken into account. To do this, a basic knowledge of multicriterion decision analysis is necessary. The objective of this book is to supply that knowledge and enable it to be applied. The book is intended for use by practitioners (managers, consultants), researchers, and students in engineering and business.
