Review Innovation and Small Enterprises in the Third World (New Horizons in the Economics of Innovation Series) / Edward Elgar Publishing:

Innovation is crucial for small enterprises to become and remain competitive in the global economy. In this title, the authors have combined theoretical insights with comprehensive case studies on innovation among small-scale enterprises in developing countries, paying particular attention to technological change in clusters of small firms. The authors deliberately use a broad definition of innovation in order to emphasize the fact that technological change and innovation adoption takes place on a wider scale and in a greater number of forms than is frequently assumed. The case studies such as the Kenyan food processing sector, furniture making in Nicaragua and tile manufacturing in Indonesia, highlight the patterns of innovation adoption and diffusion, and serve as a backdrop to the study. The authors pay specific attention to innovation by small enterprises in times of economic crisis and go on to assess the mechanisms employed to promote innovation. They demonstrate that although radical innovation among small enterprises occurs on a limited scale, innovation through gradual incremental improvements in production processes and products is continuous.

Review New Technology-Based Firms in the 1990s (New Technology-Based Firms) (New Technology-Based Firms) / Pergamon:

Hardbound. The selected papers in this volume bear witness to a maturing of High Technology Small Firms (HTSF) research. In the past, HTSF research has produced some solid findings, but also several paradoxes: shedding more light on the unintended and paradoxical effects of technology developments regarding HTSFs is now one of the aims of research in this field, and an observed change in the focus of the research agenda is reflected in this book. Although many of the topics have also been covered in earlier volumes, a gradual shift from descriptive case or survey studies to more explanatory studies, with an objective of understanding the processes that drive HTSF development, now becomes apparent. Researchers from different backgrounds increasingly strive to apply and integrate theoretical traditions that focus on the individual firm, regional and wider environmental levels. As a result of this shift, topics such as financing, internationalisation or.

Review Ashgate Publishing / Economic Growth Theory: Capital, Knowledge And Economic Stuctures Publication date: 2005-09
Dewey code: 338.90015195
List Price: $160.00
Price: $125.78

Review Economic Growth Theory: Capital, Knowledge And Economic Stuctures / Ashgate Publishing:

This book develops a new theoretical framework to examine the issues of economic growth and development. Providing analysis of economic dynamics in a competitive economy under government intervention in infrastructure and income distribution, the book develops a unique analytical framework under the influence of traditional neoclassical growth theory. However, in a departure from neoclassical growth theory it examines both the Solow-Swan and the Ramsey growth models, introducing a utility function which treats consumer choices in ways critically different to previous approaches. Using practical examples and models the book demonstrates how this new direction can effectively analyze the key issues of economic growth, in a compact and comprehensive manner.

Review Oil Wealth and the Fate of the Forest (Routledge Explorations in Environmentaleconomics, 2) / Routledge:

Oil-related activities damage tropical rainforests, but this is just one side of a complicated story. This book, a study of oil producing countries, looks at the linkages between macroeconomic trends and how policies affect the environment. In a balanced and comprehensive review, Sven Wunder, shows that oil revenues can indirectly come to protect tropical rainforests using case studies based on eight countries including Cameroon, Ecuador, Gabon, Papua New Guinea and Venezuela. This topical, accessible and readable book has immediate and direct implications for policy formulation that help decide what can be done to diminish deforestation without jeopardizing economic growth. This book needs to be read not only by students and academics involved in environmental economics, but also by all those involved in policymaking.

Review Management Education in the Network Economy: Its Context, Content, and Organization / Springer:

In the network economy, concepts of management knowledge, management learning, and business school organization should change. Otherwise, they will not survive the 21st century. Different (f)actors are putting new demand upon providers of management education and traditional providers of management education are faced with new competitors. Moreover, the dynamics of the playing field have changed, as have approaches to (management) learning. Management Education in the Network Economy proposes the idea of networked business school to cope with these challenges. The book deals with the following subjects: 1) Current economic and organizational realities can best be viewed from the perspective of network organization; management knowledge and education should reflect these transformations to survive. 2) The idea and organization of (management) learning are revolutionizing, as well as the market for (management) education, which brings about huge changes for business schools. 3) Business school, particularly, should capitalize on these transformations and should strategically (re)organize and (re)position themselves to compete in the playing field for management education. 4) A networked learning environment is an integrative and effective learning environment for organizing management education in the 21st century network economy. 5) The networked business school is the organizational form to survive in the 21st century network economy, reflecting the environmental changes and demands, and to realize a competitive edge in the field of management education.

Review The Polish Miracle: Lessons for the Emerging Markets (Transition and Development) / Ashgate Publishing:

This book discusses the transition to a market economy, political democracy and civic society in Poland, the central European country which initiated the process of post-communist transformation sixteen years ago and which is now a member of the European Union. Poland is an instructive case in terms of: comparative economics; structural reforms; institutional build up; integration in the world economy; and a successful emerging market. For these reasons the book will be a valuable publication which will attract the attention of both researchers and practitioners. The book has been written by an excellent team of researchers with extensive experience of policymaking and comprehensive research output within the field of comparative and development economics and economic policy. It includes macro- and micro-economic analyzes as well as political approaches to the issues under discussion.

Review A Tale of Two Global Cities: Comparing the Territorialities of Telecommunications Developments in Paris and London / Ashgate Publishing:

Since the mid-1980s, telecommunications and information technologies (IT) have become more intensely bound up than ever before in the social, economic, political and cultural processes and transformations which are increasingly concentrated in and between key strategic urban places across the globe. By analysing telecommunications developments in Paris and London, this book offers an explicit comparative and cross-national approach to the development of urban telecommunications infrastructures and to the development of global cities through a focus on these crucial infrastructures. The case studies are founded solidly on a critical discussion of and engagement with the most relevant and recent debates and theories in urban studies, geography and planning. By examining differing, but parallel influences of national, urban and local contexts, processes and practices bound up in telecommunications developments, the book firmly underlines the inherently territorial basis of these developments and their multi-scalar elements and implications, all of which are being reinforced by the current stringent strategic retrenching of telecommunications operations around the globe.

Review Informal Venture Capital: Investors, Investments and Policy Issues in Finland / Springer:

Small businesses in virtually all industrialized countries find it increasingly difficult to obtain finance from institutional sources. Banks have become more risk-averse; venture capital funds, previously of only marginal significance, are now often concentrating their investments on established companies; and management buyouts and buyins and pressures to reduce government spending have resulted in a reduction in public policy initiatives. In this context there is a growing interest in the role of the informal venture capital market as an alternative source of risk finance for small business. Informal Venture Capital: Investors, Investments and Policy Issues in Finland investigates the phenomenon of `business angels' - wealthy private individuals who invest in small businesses - who are increasingly recognized throughout the developed world as representing the most important source of venture capital for entrepreneurial businesses in their start-up and early growth stages. This volume answers key questions about these investors, and contributes significant new evidence on aspects of the informal venture capital market which have not been examined in previous studies. It further provides an authoritative assessment of the effectiveness of policy initiatives to stimulate the supply of informal venture capital, based on the experiences in Finland.
