Review Optimal Inventory Modeling of Systems: Multi-Echelon Techniques (International Series in Operations Research & Management Science) / Springer:Most books on inventory theory use the item approach to determine stock levels, ignoring the impact of unit cost, echelon location, and hardware indenture. Optimal Inventory Modeling of Systems is the first book to take the system approach to inventory modeling. The result has been dramatic reductions in the resources to operate many systems - fleets of aircraft, ships, telecommunications networks, electric utilities, and the space station. Although only four chapters and appendices are totally new in this edition, extensive revisions have been made in all chapters, adding numerous worked-out examples. Many new applications have been added including commercial airlines, experience gained during Desert Storm, and adoption of the Windows interface as a standard for personal computer models.

Review Claim, Intent, and Persuasion: Organizational Legitimacy and the Rhetoric of Corporate Mission Statements / Springer:The issue of organizational legitimacy is increasingly gaining the attention of researchers and managers. While legitimacy can be described in a number of ways, defined by the harder social sciences it has usually been considered a static, one-dimensional characteristic. As a result, previous studies have often failed to explore organization's operational strategies for gaining wide social legitimacy. The goal of Claim, Intent, and Persuasion: Organizational Legitimacy and the Rhetoric of Corporate Mission Statements is to explore how organizations enact strategies to gain legitimacy. The book employs a pluralistic definition of legitimacy that draw its concepts from the fields of organizational theory, sociology, political science and law. The dynamics of the legitimation process are explored through a study of corporate mission statements analyzed from a semiotic perspective. The book argues that various interpretations of the legitimation process can coexist through differing narrative strategies that offer corporations alternate ways to present themselves internally and externally. By setting up a multi-facted theory of organizational legitimacy, supported by an empirical study of corporation mission statements, this book offers a new, more integrated interpretation of the legitimation process that seeks to advance the dialogue regarding the political and instition views of organizations.

Review Managing Technological Development (Routledge Advances in Management and Businessstudies, 25) / Routledge:In this book, the story of how IKEA and its paper producers struggled to solve the problem of creating environmentally friendly paper constitutes the foundation of a discussion of technological development. Through a detailed analysis of the case-study, the authors demonstrate the necessity of including social, technological and economical factors when dealing with such issues. Focusing on the interactive aspects of commercial and technological development, they examine how new solutions are developed and shaped in relation to the different companies and organizations involved. They investigate resources in terms of how they are related and built into other resources through historical and contemporary interaction processes. Their overall emphasis is on dealing with the issue of how different, closely and distantly related companies and organizations are affected when resources are developed.

Review Microfinance Perils and Prospects (Routledge Studies in Development Economics) / Routledge:This book provides a much-needed historical, political and economic dimension to the current knowledge on microfinance. Collectively, the contributors chart the relationship between the prevailing popularity of microfinance and the consolidation of neo-liberal economic ideology worldwide. Examining current macro-economic trends this volume analyses the historical confluence of microfinance with feminist notions of empowerment. This book explores the processes and the extent to which gender hierarchies are institutionalized in development, and examines the ensuing implications. Microfinance offers programmatic and procedural guidelines for designing microfinance programs-and practicing a kind of development more generally-that could engage women's solidarity to challenge existing patterns of subordination. Microfinance will prove essential reading for students, academics and practitioners in development economics, gender studies and social and cultural anthropology.

Review Encyclopedia of International Development / Routledge:International Development is now a major global activity and the focus of the rapidly growing academic discipline of development studies. The Encyclopedia of International Development provides definitions and discussions of the key concepts, controversies and actors associated with international development for a readership of development workers, teachers and students. With 600 entries, ranging in length from shorter factual studies to more in-depth essays, a comprehensive system of cross references and a full index, it is the most definitive guide to international development yet published. Development is more than a simple increase in a country's wealth and living conditions. It also implies increasing people's choices and freedoms; it is change that is inclusive and empowering. Development theory and practice has important applications to questions of economic growth, trade, governance, education, healthcare, gender rights and environmental protection, and it involves issues such as international aid, peacekeeping, famine relief, and strategies against HIV/AIDS. The Encyclopedia treats these topics and many more, and provides critical analyses of important actors within development such as the United Nations and World Bank, non-governmental organizations and corporations. Contributors to this volume reflect the multidisciplinary and international nature of the subject. They come from social science disciplines such as economics, international studies, political science and anthropology, and from specialties such as medicine. This Encyclopedia provides crucial information for universities, students and professional organizations involved with international development, and those interested in related topics such as international studies or other studies of social and economic change today.

Review Creation and Transfer of Knowledge: Institutions and Incentives / Springer:Is knowledge an economic good? Which are the characteristics of the institutions regulating the production and diffusion of knowledge? Cumulation of knowledge is a key determinant of economic growth, but only recently knowledge has moved to the core of economic analysis. Recent literature also gives profound insights into events like scientific progress, artistic and craft development which have been rarely addressed as socio-economic institutions, being the domain of sociologists and historians rather than economists. This volume adopts a multidisciplinary approach to bring knowledge in the focus of attention, as a key economic issue.

Review The Automat: The History, Recipes, and Allure of Horn & Hardart's Masterpiece / Clarkson Potter:On the 100th birthday of Horn & Hardart, a look back at one of America’s most beloved institutions A coin-operated glass-and-chrome wonder, Horn & Hardart’s Automats revolutionized the way Americans ate when they opened up in Philadelphia and New York in the early twentieth century. In a country where the industrial revolution had just taken hold, eating at a restaurant with self-serving vending machines rather than waitresses and Art Deco architecture instead of stuffy dining rooms was an unforgettable experience. The Automat served freshly made food for the price of a few coins, and no one made a better cup of coffee. By the peak of its popularity—from the Great Depression to the post-war years—the Automat was more than an inexpensive place to buy a good meal; it was a culinary treasure, a technical marvel, and an emblem of the times. The Automat will take readers back to the days of Charles Lindbergh and Babe Ruth, Walter Winchell and Jack Benny, the Brooklyn Dodgers and shows at Radio City. Through beautiful archival photography, candid interviews, delicious recipes, and wonderfully evocative memorabilia, Lorraine Diehl and Marianne Hardart bring to life a time when a handful of nickels and the twist of a wrist bought a good square meal—Macaroni and Cheese, Boston Baked Beans, Chicken Pot Pie, Rice Pudding, and all the other favorites whose recipes are in these pages. The Automat was a true American treasure, and here is its tribute. “I have always thought that the Automat in New York has the best scrambled eggs in the world. ” —Gregory Peck “To have your own stack of nickels placed in your tiny hands; to be able to choose your own food, richly on display like museum pieces; to make quick and final decisions at the age of eight; this was a lesson in financial dealings that not even two years at the Wharton School could buy today. ” —Neil Simon“Oh, be still my heart! I used to shine shoes when I was fourteen years old. [+]
And when I was a little ahead, I would stop at Horn & Hardart. ” —Tony Curtis“I lived at the Automat. They had the greatest chocolate milk. When I moved to Philadelphia, I apportioned less than two dollars a day to eat on, and the Automat was the only place I could do it. ” —Dick Clark“I went to the Automat all the time. I grew up going to the Automat. The food was delicious. And it was wonderful. ” —Woody Allen“The first time I came to New York, I had a meal at the Automat. I had heard about the Automat, and I had to go see what it was all about. ” —Leonard Nimoy“I had the same lunch every day: three vegetables, a roll, and cocoa. All for twenty-five cents. ” —Jerome Robbins.

Review Entrepreneurship and Economic Progress (Routledge Foundations of the Market Economy) / Routledge:Entrepreneurship is the engine of economic progress, but mainstream economic models of economic growth tend to leave out the entrepreneurial elements of the economy. This new book from Randall Holcombe begins by identifying areas in which evolutionary and Austrian approaches differ from the academic mainstream literature on economic growth, before moving on to distinguish growth from progress. The author then analyzes economic models of the firm based on the idea that it is entrepreneurship that drives economic progress. The book should prove to be a natural successor to recent Routledge books by Frederic Sautet and David Harper.
