Review Livserindringer/Memories of My Life: A Woman's Life in Nineteenth-century Denmark / Edwin Mellen Pr:

This is the first full English translation of "Memories of My Life". This memoir examines Danish provincial life, childhood and education, and is relevant to the study of nineteenth-century women's history and literature. In 1867, on the Danish island of Bornholm, a woman named Cecilie Hertz began a memoir, starting with her happy childhood in Bogense in the 1830s. But Cecilie also coped with much personal loss, as well as the Schleswig-Holstein war of 1864. Later, after the death of her husband and a deep life crisis, Cecilie forged onwards independently, founding a school for girls in Fredensborg, becoming a Unitarian, and adopting a child. In its self-conscious processing of memory and experience, "Memories of My Life" is indebted to Soren Kierkegaard's philosophy, yet its touch is light and engaging. Cecilie Hertz comes across as a modern woman, of extraordinary sensibility and intelligence. "Memories of My Life" was partly published in Danish in 1930, but is now offered complete, in the international scholarly language of English, annotated by excerpts from other writings, and illustrated.

Review Jutland: The German Perspective / Cassell:

For the Germans, the Battle of Jutland in 1916 should have been a simple set piece that lured the British Grand Fleet into a lethal trap. Instead, it turned into a confused, rambling conflict. The Royal Navy suffered higher losses, but the German fleet never again ventured out of harbor to fight. Using previously unseen records, action reports, letters, plus charts and drawings of major warships, a naval historian tells this absorbing tale from the German perspective. It sheds new light on just what happened.

Review Queen Margrethe I, 1353-1412, and the Founding of the Nordic Union (Northern World, V. 9) (Northern World, V. 9) / Brill Academic Publishers:

This book presents the fascinating story of Queen Margrete I and her rise to power in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Her political ambitions culminated in the founding of the Nordic Union in 1397, which had vital impact on the history of Scandinavia for the next centuries. The book analyses the most central sources and gives a vivid picture of medieval society in Denmark during the late Middle Ages. At the same time the book describes the character of this dynamic woman, who is considered as one of the most important rulers in the Middle Ages. Only a very small part of the literature concerning Scandinavian medieval history has been published in English, and this book gives for the first time foreign readers the opportunity to read about the background to the founding of the Nordic Union. The text is well illustrated.

Review Norse Romance II: The Knights of the Round Table (Arthurian Archives) / D.S.Brewer:

The Knights of the Round Table is devoted to translations and adaptations of French narratives featuring King Arthur's knights. It contains prose translations of three of Chrétien de Troyes's Arthurian romances: vens saga, the Norse translation of Yvain; Parcevals saga and Valvens páttr (`The Tale of Gawain'), translations of Perceval; and Erex saga, an adaptation of Erec et Enide. While the first two works, produced in Norway, are fairly faithful to their sources, Erex sagadiverges considerably in content and structure from the French source and most likely represents a thorough revision by an Icelander of what was originally a Norwegian translation. Additionally, the volume contains both an Old Norse translation and an Icelandic adaptation of the French Lai du cort mantel, the ribald story of a chastity-testing mantle at King Arthur's court. The Norse prose translation Möttuls sagawas produced at the behest of the same King Hákon who ordered the translation of the Tristan legend. In the fourteenth century a rhymed version of the saga, Skkikkju rímur, was produced in Iceland. The translators are: MARIANNE E. KALINKE, KIRSTEN WOLF, HELEN MACLEAN and MATTHEW JAMES DRISCOLL Professor MARIANNE E. KALINKEteaches in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Review The Murder of Olof Palme: A Tale of Assassination, Deception and Intrigue (Scandinavian Studies (Lewiston, N.Y.), V. 10.) / Edwin Mellen Press:

The assassination in 1986 of Olof Palme, a distinguished international statesman, remains to this day an unsolved mystery. While in some ways resembling the puzzling features inherent in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the continuing mystery has a deeper significance that the authors of this work seek to probe and elucidate. Any examination of the Palme assassination has to be conducted with reference to an extremely complex set of international factors. It is in this milieu that Palme found a special role for himself as an international statesman, seeking to mediate some of the lesser though deadly wars, in particular the Iran/Iraq conflict. Palme the Peacemaker had many enemies and a consideration of the role which may have been played by some of them is carefully examined, by a reference to a theoretical schema of the assassination phenomenon, of the motives and modalities of each of the likely candidates. There were many who had no wish to see an early settlement of the Iran/Iraq ward. Some of these were nation states with an animus against one or both of the combatants, Some hoped that hostilities would exhaust the two contenders, while others, such as international arms dealers, sought to profit. The authors see the Swedish Prime Minister as an unfortunate victim of a largely clandestine clash of forces: it is their identity that continues to elude investigators. The authors examine all the evidence, present their own case on these arcane matters, leaving it to the readers to come to their own conclusions.

Review Queen Christina of Sweden and Her Circle: The Transformation of a Seventeenth-Century Philosophical Libertine (Brill's Studies in Intellectual History) / Brill Academic Pub:

The life and works of Queen Christina of Sweden (1626-1689) have often been obscured behind a haze of Iurid myths and legends. This book looks again at her notorious abdication of 1654, seeing it against the background of her reputation as a "libertine", a heterodox religious thinker. Her subsequent conversion to Catholicism is therefore understood as a consequence of messianic and millenarian expectations during those turbulent years, and her bizarre attempt in 1657 to become the ruler of Naples is revealed to be the political wing of a comprehensive religious and intellectual philosophy.
