Review Radiation Source Use and Replacement: Abbreviated Version / National Academies Press:

In the United States there are several thousand devices containing high-activity radiation sources licensed for use in areas ranging from medical uses such as cancer therapy to safety uses such as testing of structures and industrial equipment. Those radiation sources are licensed by the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and state agencies. Concerns have been raised about the safety and security of the radiation sources, particularly amid fears that they could be used to create dirty bombs, or radiological dispersal device (RDD). In response to a request from Congress, the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission asked the National Research Council to conduct a study to review the uses of high-risk radiation sources and the feasibility of replacing them with lower risk alternatives. The study concludes that the U. S. [+]
government should consider factors such as potential economic consequences of misuse of the radiation sources into its assessments of risk. Although the committee found that replacements of most sources are possible, it is not economically feasible in some cases. The committee recommends that the U. S. government take steps to in the near term to replace radioactive cesium chloride radiation sources, a potential 'dirty bomb' ingredient used in some medical and research equipment, with lower-risk alternatives. The committee further recommends that longer term efforts be undertaken to replace other sources. This book presents a number of options for making those replacements.

Review Unlikely Victory: How General Electric Succeeded in the Chemical Industry / Wiley-AIChE:

Many companies that stray too far from their core business fail. So how is it that General Electric, a major electrical manufacturing company, ended up as one of the top U. S. chemical producers—with 1998 sales of $6. 6 billion? In Unlikely Victory, Jerome T. Coe, a retired 40-year career employee with General Electric, who spent more than 20 years as a manager of the company’s chemical businesses, suggests that it was a combination of necessity, forward-thinking of the engineers, and managers wise enough to give them breathing room. “Much of what they did (then) was counter to the prevailing GE culture,” he writes. “Today, it has become the corporate culture. ” The book tells the whole story of this successful business model, from the early years of GE chemistry through the company’s successes with silicones, synthetic diamond, Lexan polycarbonate plastic, and other high-performance thermoplastics. It also profiles four scientists and five managers—including former CEO John F. [+]
Welch, Jr. , a chemical engineer and a product of the GE plastic business—who made a significant difference in the company’s chemical success. The book is amply illustrated with photographs of the people, products, and plants that contributed to one of America’s most unusual corporate success stories.

In response to this, The Fire Inspector’s Guide was developed, providing inspectors with a comprehensive set of the notices, letters, complaints and other documents that are critical to the effective enforcement of today’s most common problems and violations of the International Fire Code®. Also ideal for municipal attorneys who can use the included forms to draft legal documents, this book provides all the forms necessary to keep reporting accurate, consistent, and efficient.

Review Wiley-AIChE / RELEASE: A Model with Data to Predict Aerosol Rainout in Accidental Releases (Ccps Concept Book) Publication date: 1998-03-15
Dewey code: 628.53
List Price: $222.95
Price: $144.37

Review RELEASE: A Model with Data to Predict Aerosol Rainout in Accidental Releases (Ccps Concept Book) / Wiley-AIChE:

This book documents CCPS's Aerosol Research Program to develop a model to predict liquid rainout from release of a pressurized, liquefied gas-and, hence the residual amount of material in a vapor cloud, which may be greater than the amount calculated from an enthalpy chart. RELEASE predicts the rate of fluid discharge, the depressurization, flashing and formation of liquid drops, the entrainment of drops into the vapor cloud, the subsequent spreading of the jet, and rate of liquid rainout to a pool on the ground. Designed in a modular fashion to permit adjustment and corrections as new data become available, its multi-layered approach contains sub-models that include the complexities of many variables, including the effect of liquid superheat, rate of bubble growth, criterion for bubble formation, and heat transfer from the liquid to the growing vapor bubble. To validate RELEASE, CCPS conducted small- and large-scale experiments using superheated water, heated liquefied chlorine, methylamine, and cyclohexane that produced valuable data in an area where data are scarce. This book gives complete access, in text and on CD-ROM, to the model and the test data, giving users an informed ability to apply the model to their own work.

Review World Health Organization / Principles for Evaluating Health Risks in Children Associated With Exposure to Chemicals (Environmental Health Criteria) (Environmental Health Criteria Series) Publication date: 2007-05-30
Dewey code: 660
List Price: $45.00
Price: $41.00

Review Principles for Evaluating Health Risks in Children Associated With Exposure to Chemicals (Environmental Health Criteria) (Environmental Health Criteria Series) / World Health Organization:

This new volume in the Environmental Health Criteria (EHC) Series provides a systematic analysis of the scientific principles to be considered in assessing health risks in children; taking into account their unique susceptibilities. The terms children and child as used in this report include the stages of development from conception through adolescence. This new EHC builds on previous volumes addressing methodologies for assessing risks in children: EHC 30, Principles for Evaluating Health Risks to Progeny Associated with Exposure to Chemicals During Pregnancy (WHO, 1984) and EHC 59, Principles for Evaluating Health Risks from Chemicals During Infancy and Early Childhood: The Need for a Special Approach (WHO, 1986). The central focus of this volume is on the child (developing embryo, fetus, infant, etc. ) rather than on a specific environmental agent, target organ, or disease. Thus, it addresses the difficult task of integrating all what is known about both exposure information, toxicity data, and health outcome at different life stages, which is especially challenging when data are limited for particular life stages (e. g. , during pregnancy). The book will be useful to public health officials, research and regulatory scientists, and risk assessors.

Using case studies of actual accidents to highlight the potential threats and explain the possible causes before giving potential safeguards, it raises the knowledge and awareness of operators to the dangers involved with the start-up and shutdown of process units, enabling them to spot hazards before accidents occur. The book concludes with a self-test section allowing readers to test their understanding of the information presented. An excellent introduction to the topic for students.

Review World Health Organisation / Chloroform (Environmental Health Criteria , No 163) Creator: J. De Fouw
Publication date: 1994-12-01
Dewey code: 614
List Price: $35.60
Price: $31.60

Review Chloroform (Environmental Health Criteria , No 163) / World Health Organisation:

Evaluates the risks to human health and the environment posed by exposure to chloroform, a volatile liquid used in pesticide formulations and as a solvent and chemical intermediate. Its use as an anaesthetic and in proprietary medicines has been discontinued in many countries following well-documented reports of adverse effects on respiratory, cardiac and liver function. Exposure of the general public occurs via food, drinking-water, and indoor air, with water use in homes making a substantial contribution to levels in indoor air. Studies have demonstrated significant dermal absorption while showering. The most extensive chapter reviews the results of toxicity studies in laboratory animals and in vitro test systems. While both the liver and the kidneys are target organs, the most universally observed toxic effect is damage to the liver. Studies indicate that cytotoxicity followed by cell proliferation is the most important cause for the development of liver and kidney tumours following experimental exposure to chloroform. The severity of toxic effects was observed to vary according to species, vehicle, and route of administration. A chapter on health effects in humans notes disturbances in respiratory and cardiovascu-lar functions observed following short-term exposure. As in animals, liver and kidney damage was the most frequently reported adverse effect of long-term exposure. [+]
Data were judged inadequate to implicate chloroform exposure via drinking-water as a cause of human cancer. Concerning effects on the environment, the report concludes that the low levels of chloroform in surface water should not pose a hazard to aquatic organisms. ". produced with the usual conciseness and readability. " - International Journal of Environmental Studies.
