Dewey code: 658.4013
List Price: $49.95

Review Lean Six Sigma for the Office (Resource Management) / CRC:

Historically, the integration of manufacturing methodologies into the office environment has proven to be problematic. Part of the difficulty lies in the fact that process workflows tend to be globally dispersed and thus rely heavily on information technology. But in complex service systems that contain a mix of employees, consultants, and technology, standardized protocols have been shown to reduce cycle time and transactional cost as well as improve quality. The successful application of Lean methodologies to improve process workflows is an efficient way to simplify operations and prevent mistakes. In Lean Six Sigma for the Office, Six Sigma guru James Martin presents proven modifications that can be deployed in offices, particularly those offices involved with global operations. Making use of Kaizen and Six Sigma concepts, along with Lean manufacturing principles, this book instructs managers on how they can improve operational efficiency and increase customer satisfaction. Theauthor brings experience gleaned from his application of these methodologies in a myriad of industries to create a practical and hands-on reference for the office environment. Using a detailed sequence of activities, including over 140 figures and tables as well as checklists and evaluation tools, he demonstrates how to realize the rapid improvement of office operations, and how to eliminate unnecessary tasks through value stream mapping (VSM). The book also emphasizes the importance of strategic alignment of Kaizen events and the impact of organizational culture on process improvement activities. Latter chapters in the book discuss key elements of a change model in the context of transitional improvements as they relate to the process owner and local work team. [+]
By applying the proven principles found in this book, effective and sustainable organizational change can be accomplished, efficiency can be improved, and mistakes can be eliminated.

Review Reports on Food Safety 2005: Food Monitoring / Birkhäuser Basel:

Food monitoring is a tool to recognize and avoid potential risks to consumers. While the states enforce food law primarily through suspicion and risk-based investigations, food monitoring is a system of repeated representative measurements and evaluations of undesirable substances and contaminants in foods. The food monitoring programme is a joint investigative programme by the German Federal Government and the federal states which is complementary to official food control as carried out by the states. This report provides the results of the analysis in 2005 of more than 5000 samples of 50 foods or food groups of domestic and foreign origin.

Review Review of Toxicologic and Radiologic Risks to Military Personnel from Exposure to Depleted Uranium During and After Combat / National Academies Press:

Since the 1980s, the U. S. military has used depleted uranium in munitions and in protective armor on tanks. Depleted uranium is a toxic heavy metal and is weakly radioactive. Concerns have been raised about the adverse health effects from exposure to depleted uranium that is aerosolized during combat. Some think it may be responsible for illnesses in exposed veterans and civilians. These concerns led the Army to commission a book, "Depleted Uranium Aerosol Doses and Risks: Summary of U. S. Assessments", referred to as the Capstone Report that evaluates the health risks associated with depleted uranium exposure. This National Research Council book reviews the toxicologic, radiologic, epidemiologic, and toxicokinetic data on depleted uranium, and assesses the Army's estimates of health risks to personnel exposed during and after combat. [+]
The book recommends that the Army re-evaluate the basis for some of its predictions about health outcomes at low levels of exposure, but, overall, the Capstone Report was judged to provide a reasonable characterization of the exposure and risks from depleted uranium.

Review Safety Evaluation of Foods Derived by Modern Biotechnology: Concepts and Principles / Organization for Economic Cooperation & Devel:

Modern biotechnology broadens the scope of the genetic changes that can be made to food organisms, as well as the range of possible sources of food. This book elaborates scientific principles to be considered in making evaluations of new foods or food components based on a comparison with foods that have a safe history of use. The OECD Group of National Experts on Safety in Biotechnology has agreed that the most practical approach to determining the safety of foods derived by modern biotechnology is to consider whether they are "substantially equivalent" to analogous traditional food products. The case studies in this report illustrate the application of the concept of substantial equivalence.

Review The Complete Book of Pesticide Management: Science, Regulation, Stewardship, and Communication / Wiley-Interscience:

Pesticides provide myriad benefits but present a variety of risks. With definitive policies and requirements for pesticide review before a product enters the marketplace, with clear and precise labeling, and with good consumer education, however, pesticides can play an important role in maintaining the quality of life we enjoy. The Complete Book of Pesticide Management describes the step-by-step process by which industry and the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency reach a consensus on the relative risk that pesticides pose to people, wildlife, and water. While most books only skim the risk assessment process or are too technical for practical application, The Complete Book of Pesticide Management is at once technically sound and easy to understand. Fred Whitfords authoritative text links scientific information developed from pesticide testing programs with the safety and precautionary language commonly found on product labels. It describes how to communicate pesticide benefits and risks to the public and provides information on how to select pesticides and protect the professionals handling these chemicals. Risk assessment and risk communication are emphasized throughout. Contents include:The Evolution of Pesticide Regulations: The Shift from Benefits to RisksEpidemiology: Validating Human Risk AssessmentsPesticide Labels: The Convergence of Science, Public Policy, and User ResponsibilityEnvironmental Site Assessments: Managing the Facility Against ContaminationPlanning for Emergencies: Preventing and Reacting to Emergencies in the WorkplaceEducating the Community and the Workforce About Hazardous ChemicalsEngineers, scientists, toxicologists, industrial hygienists, and extension and commercial application industry professionals, as well as students of these fields, will find The Complete Book of Pesticide Management to be an indispensable resource.
