Review Statistical Methods for Psychology (with CD-ROM, High School/Retail Version) / Duxbury Resource Center:

STATISTICAL METHODS FOR PSYCHOLOGY surveys the statistical techniques commonly used in the behavioral and social sciences, especially psychology and education. This book has two underlying themes that are more or less independent of the statistical hypothesis tests that are the main content of the book. The first theme is the importance of looking at the data before formulating a hypothesis. With this in mind, the author discusses, in detail, plotting data, looking for outliers, and checking assumptions (Graphical displays are used extensively). The second theme is the importance of the relationship between the statistical test to be employed and the theoretical questions being posed by the experiment. To emphasize this relationship, the author uses real examples to help the student understand the purpose behind the experiment and the predictions made by the theory. Although this book is designed for students at the intermediate level or above, it does not assume that students have had either a previous course in statistics or a course in math beyond high-school algebra.

Review Univ. of Toronto / Social Theory: Continuity and Confrontation, A Reader Creator: Roberta Garner
Edition: 2
Publication date: 2007-05-18
Dewey code: 300.1
List Price: $49.95
Price: $32.00

Review Social Theory: Continuity and Confrontation, A Reader / Univ. of Toronto:

The organization of this social theory reader combined with Garner's short introductions to selections enables students to understand the historical flow of social theory and see how disagreements and confrontations shape theory. Writing in clear, down-to-earth language, Garner's introductions highlight links among theorists to illustrate how theoretical traditions are not rigidly separated from one another but are always in conversation, addressing and challenging each other. The second edition has been thoroughly revised and reorganized with a new section on Media and Culture in the Information Age and new selections from Erving Goffman, David Harvey, Stuart Hall, and Saskia Sassen, among others. As in the first edition, many of the classical articles are paired with contemporary theoretical and empirical studies that illustrate the continuing value of the classical concepts. Garner continues to offer her concise introductions, and all have been completely revised and updated for this edition.

Review American Psychological Association (APA) / Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis: Understanding Concepts and Applications Edition: 1
Publication date: 2004-04
Dewey code: 150.15195354
List Price: $49.95
Price: $31.18

Review Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis: Understanding Concepts and Applications / American Psychological Association (APA):

This volume presents the important concepts required for implementing two disciplines of factor analysis - exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with an emphasis on EFA/CFA linkages. Modern extensions of older data analysis methods (e. g. , ANOVA, regression, MANOVA, and descriptive discriminant analysis) have brought theory-testing procedures to the analytic forefront. Variations of factor analysis, such as the factoring of people or time, have great potential to inform psychological research. Thompson deftly presents highly technical material in an appealing and accessible manner. The book is unique in that it presents both exploratory and confirmatory methods within the single category of the general linear model (GLM). Canons of best factor analytic practice are presented and explained. An actual data set, generated by 100 graduate students and 100 faculty from the United States and Canada, is used throughout the book, allowing readers to replicate reported results.

Publication date: 2008-03-31
Dewey code: 370.72
List Price: $45.95
Price: $31.16

Review Researching Education from the Inside: Investigating Institutions from Within / Routledge:

Researching Education from the Inside focuses on research projects that are undertaken by people who already have an attachment to the institutions or social groups on which their investigations are based. They can, therefore, be considered to be `insiders'. In some cases their insider positioning is primarily important because it gets them access to the particular people and/or the phenomena that they want to investigate. At other times, however, aspects of their own `insidership' will, in itself, come under scrutiny. Insider researchers need to consider five distinct stages that can lead to ethical dilemmas, namely: Entering the field, Being in the field, Leaving the field, Writing, and Disseminating the results. This book covers these stages whist considering important issues such as:Access,Choice of research methods,Field relationships,Involvement of informants,Confidentiality and anonymity,Interpretation of findings including validity and reliability. Failure to properly consider these key factors can lead to disastrous consequences for any research but it can be a special problem for insider investigators. These vital issues are discussed by an impressive range of contributors in this ground-breaking book, making it an invaluable resource for anyone participating in Insider Research.

Review A Hodder Arnold Publication / Demographic Methods Publication date: 1998-10-01
Dewey code: 304.6072
List Price: $54.95
Price: $41.87

Review Demographic Methods / A Hodder Arnold Publication:

Demography is the study of population structure and change. As modern society becomes ever more complex, it becomes increasingly important to be able to measure accurately all aspects of change in the population, and estimate what its future size and composition might be. This book describes and explains the methods demographers use to analyze population data. Looking at mortality and fertility, population dynamics and population projections, nuptiality and migration, Andrew Hinde demonstrates that most demographic methods are applications of certain fundamental principles. The book covers material taught in introductory courses in population analysis, while also including more advanced topics such as parity progression ratios, survival analysis, and birth interval analysis. Most chapters are followed by a range of exercises, and a comprehensive set of solutions to these exercises is provided at the end of the book. Accompanying Quattro@ and Microsoft@ Excel spreadsheet files with data for all the numerical exercises, plus some additional files of data from recent censuses and surveys, are provided on the World Wide Web; instructions for obtaining these files are included in the book.

Dewey code: 371
List Price: $49.95

Review Tensions in Teaching about Teaching: Understanding Practice as a Teacher Educator (Self Study of Teaching and Teacher Education Practices) / Springer:

This book captures the excitement and difficulties of self-study of teacher education practices and places it at the forefront of approaches to practitioner inquiry. It offers a unique insight into the relationship between teaching about teaching, and learning about teaching that emerged through a one-year self-study conducted by the author in her Biology Methods class. The nature of the knowledge of teacher education practice that is developed from the study is conceptualised as a series of tensions that influence teacher educators’ learning about their practice. The book illustrates how the notion of tensions can act as an important means for both analysing practice and articulating the professional knowledge that comprises a pedagogy of teacher education.
