Review Object-Oriented Database Design Clearly Explained / Morgan Kaufmann:Object-oriented database management systems are growing in popularity, thanks to changing corporate needs and the emergence of several viable products. However, while most database professionals have had at least some exposure to the basic concepts of object-oriented programming, information relating specifically to object-oriented databases has remained hard to come by. Object-Oriented Database Design Clearly Explained remedies this, providing developers and administrators with a ground-up understanding of the logical design of object-oriented databases. Focusing on the principles of the object paradigm while noting the particularities of specific products, this book will give readers the know-how required to produce effective designs in any environment. Key Features* Equips the reader with a sound understanding of the object paradigm and all key concepts, illustrating its points with three in-depth case * Presents product- and platform-neutral guidelines and advice, teaching readers the underlying object-oriented design principles they will need to apply regardless of the specific technology adopted* Details today's OODBMS standards and the variety of approaches taken by current products* Serves as a companion volume to Relational Database Design Clearly Explained, providing parallel examples that help to clarify relational and object-oriented data models.

Review DB2 for Windows for Dummies / For Dummies:This unique guide, written by a senior member of IBM's DB2 development team, is the first book to cover DB2 version 6. And the only book to offer a trial edition of the software on CD-ROM. You will discover how to install a DB2 server and clients, design and administer a database, and much more. DB2 for Dummies approaches problems of database engineering and administration via IBM's DB2 Universal Database solution. It assumes essentially no reader experience with relational databases, and absolutely no experience with DB2. For those reasons, it is excellent. All three of the authors work for IBM on the DB2 team, and they've merged their technical expertise into the Dummies format nicely. The book earns its keep for two classes of readers. First, it's well-suited to people who have no database experience at all and want to learn via DB2. Second, it's a fine text for people who have experience with another relational database management system (RDBMS), such as Oracle or Sybase, and want to learn how DB2 works. [+]
As is typical of books in this series, some of the cutesy prose comes across as way too contrived ("Imagine buying a travel guide. but without an index!"), but the technical information readers need is never far away. Sections begin with text explanations of whatever feature is being introduced (these are great for experienced database administrators trying to get a feel for DB2 terminology) and then turn to procedures you can follow step-by-step (which are comforting to nervous novices). In turn, all important configuration and administration tasks get ample coverage, and readers leave able to do most everyday DB2 work. -David Wall Topics covered: IBM's DB2 Universal Database 6. 1 client/server database system for Microsoft Windows. After coverage of client and server installation, the book introduces instances, databases, table spaces, tables, and key administrative tasks like replication and performance monitoring.

Review Object-Oriented Data Warehouse Design: Building A Star Schema / Prentice Hall PTR:Designed to help build a complete star schema data model-from initial analysis through implementation, make better decisions about granularity and precision, master dimensioning, hierarchies, and sizing. DLC: Data warehousing. Written for any database developer or IS manager planning to build a data warehouse, Object-Oriented Data Warehouse Design provides just the right level of detail. Mixing practical advice for project management with a remarkably clear explanation of how data warehouses store information, this book fits the bill for anyone who wants to deliver a working system that fits the needs of its users. Data warehouses are often plagued with failure, the author argues, and his prescription for success is what makes this title worthwhile. First on the agenda is a concise tour of project management techniques (using today's iterative software methodologies) along with a practical guide to what's in store for the potential data warehouse architect as he or she works within the enterprise to combine data from disparate sources. (The author's candid sample interviews with different users of a hypothetical warehouse are alone worth the price of the book. ) The remarkably clear diagrams for understanding how data is stored in a "cube" (or hypercube) within a data warehouse will help any developer or manager understand the underlying theoretical design issues. Combined with a sample star schema for a real-estate brokerage firm, this title also demonstrates a distinctly practical side. (There are numerous pages listing the specifics of tables needed for the sample project. [+]
) You'll also be able to understand the traditional star schema, where dimensions are used to query large fact tables, plus when to implement snowflake schemas to improve performance. This concise and well-diagrammed book can let virtually anyone understand how warehouses work; the material on project management may save the day in your next data warehouse project. Filled with practical information, Object-Oriented Data Warehouse Design will be a valuable resource for any developer or project manager. -Richard Dragan Topics covered: Introduction to data warehouses, advantages and design issues, decision support systems (DSS), online analytical processing (OLAP), data mining, iterative development techniques, metadata and metadata standards, object modeling, analysis and design, case study and sample interviews with data warehouse stakeholders, multiple dimensions and dimension tables, cubes and hypercubes, slicing and dicing, constellation/star vs. snowflake schemas, fact tables, design hints, parallel processing for data warehousing, star query optimization, data warehousing on the Web, and checklist for successful data warehouse design.

Review The Art of SQL / O'Reilly Media, Inc.:For all the buzz about trendy IT techniques, data processing is still at the core of our systems, especially now that enterprises all over the world are confronted with exploding volumes of data. Database performance has become a major headache, and most IT departments believe that developers should provide simple SQL code to solve immediate problems and let DBAs tune any "bad SQL" later. In "The Art of SQL," author and SQL expert Stephane Faroult argues that this "safe approach" only leads to disaster. His insightful book, named after Art of War by Sun Tzu, contends that writing quick inefficient code is sweeping the dirt under the rug. SQL code may run for 5 to 10 years, surviving several major releases of the database management system and on several generations of hardware. The code must be fast and sound from the start, and that requires a firm understanding of SQL and relational theory. "The Art of SQL" offers best practices that teach experienced SQL users to focus on strategy rather than specifics. Faroult's approach takes a page from Sun Tzu's classic treatise by viewing database design as a military campaign. You need knowledge, skills, and talent. Talent can't be taught, but every strategist from Sun Tzu to modern-day generals believed that it can be nurtured through the experience of others. [+]
They passed on their experience acquired in the field through basic principles that served as guiding stars amid the sound and fury of battle. This is what Faroult does with SQL. Like a successful battle plan, good architectural choices are based on contingencies. What if the volume of this or that table increases unexpectedly? What if, following a merger, the numberof users doubles? What if you want to keep several years of data online? Faroult's way of looking at SQL performance may be unconventional and unique, but he's deadly serious about writing good SQL and using SQL well. "The Art of SQL" is not a cookbook, listing problems and giving recipes. The aim is to get you-and your manager-to raise good questions.
