This engaging story of an eighteenth century Scottish laird whose brief arranged marriage was annulled on the grounds of his mental capacity - which seen through modern eyes can be identified as autism. Review Trapping the Boundary Waters: A Tenderfoot in the Border Country 1919-1920 (Midwest Reflections) / Minnesota Historical Society Press:

On 4 May 4 1919, Charlie Cook set off for a year of adventure in the Minnesota-Ontario Boundary Waters. Soon abandoned by his comfort-loving companion, the restless World War I veteran spent an enlightening year learning - often the hard way - how to paddle and sail on windy lakes, hunt and fish for food, bake 'rough delicacies' in a reflector oven, and build winter-proof shelters. His how-to descriptions of trapping beaver, mink, and other game are unsurpassed in their detail. For anyone who loves the Boundary Waters or wonders what this rugged region was like not so long ago, Cook's story reveals a world still ruled by nature but on the brink of change. Cook embarked on his 1919-20 adventure at a time of transition in north-eastern Minnesota's Boundary Waters. Today's readers will find his descriptions of its colourful inhabitants, wild terrain, and abundant animal life evocative of a long-ago era, but they may also note the signs of development that appear on his horizon almost daily.

Review My Life and The Paradise Garage : Keep On Dancin' / Publisher Distribution Company:

Keep on Dancin' is the story of the rise and fall of the legendary Paradise Garage, the underground disco that was ruled by the greatest DJ of all time and rivaled only by Studio 54 in its soulful and decadent magnificence. Set against the passionate love affair of two men who would both eventually rate as two of New York City's greatest style and scene makers, the story traces the hypnotic birth of disco, the Garage inspired technical innovations that changed the music industry, the erotic life of gay New York and the devastating rise of AIDS. What started out as a whisper of an idea between lovers - Garage owner Michael Brody and financial backer Mel Cheren - eventually culminated into a dance palace that existed for more than a decade and is still spoken about with reverence. Keep on Dancin' gives hundreds of private recollections from the people who were there: Tom Moulton, Francois Kevorkian, Grace Jones, Thelma Houston, Frankie Knuckles, Junior Vasquez and others help recreate the moment when love was the message.

Review Adams Family Correspondence Vols. 5 & 6: December 1784-December 1785 (The Adams Papers, Series II, Adams Family Correspondence) / Belknap Press:

"I cannot O! I cannot be reconciled to living as I have done for 3 years past… Will you let me try to soften, if I cannot wholy) releave you, from your Burden of Cares and perplexities?'' So begins Abigail Adams' correspondence to her husband in these volumes: a plea to end their long separation, as John Adams represented the United States in Europe while Abigail tended to family and farm in Massachusetts, and passed on to John Crucial political information from Congress. In October 1782, the Adams family was as widely scattered as it would ever be, with young John Quincy Adams in St. Petersburg, John at The Hague, and Abigail in Braintree with her daughter and younger sons. With the summer of 1784, however, Abigail would have her fondest wish, as most of the family reunited to spend nearly a year together in Europe. As the Adams family traveled, and as the children came of age, so their correspondence expanded to include an ever larger and more fascinating range of Cultural topics and international figures. The record of this remarkable expansion, these volumes document John Adams' diplomatic triumphs, his wife and daughter's participation in the cosmopolitan scenes of Paris and London, and his son John Quincy's travels in Europe and America. These pages also welcome Thomas Jefferson, who soon became one of Abigail's closest friends, into the family correspondence. From the intimacies 0f the children's education, sentimental and worldly, to the details of the 'arm friendship between Abigail and Madame Lafayette, to the grand drama of Edmund Burke and William Pitt the Younger debating in Parliament, the contents of these letters draw an incredibly rich picture of international life in the 17805 and an incomparable portrait of America's first family of politics and letters.

Review My Century in History: Memoirs / University Press of Kentucky:

When Thomas D. Clark was hired to teach history at the University of Kentucky in 1931, he began a career that would span nearly three-quarters of a century and would profoundly change not only the history department and the university but the entire Commonwealth. His still-definitive "History of Kentucky" (1937) was one of more than thirty books he would write or edit dealing with Kentucky, the South, and the American frontier. In addition to his wide scholarly contributions, Clark devoted his life to the preservation of Kentucky's historical records. His efforts resulted in the Commonwealth's first archival system and the subsequent creation of the Kentucky Library and Archives, the University of Kentucky Special Collections and Archives, the Kentucky Oral History Commission, the Kentucky History Center (recently named for him), and the University Press of Kentucky. Born on a cotton farm in Louisville, Mississippi, in 1903, Thomas Dionysius Clark dropped out of school after seventh grade to work on a canal dredgeboat before resuming his formal education. In "My Century in History", Clark offers vivid memories of his personal and academic journey, a journey that took him from Mississippi to Kentucky and North Carolina, to leadership of the nation's major historical organizations, and to visiting professorships in Austria, England, Greece, and India, as well as in universities throughout the United States. An enormously popular public lecturer as well, he touched thousands of lives. With characteristic wit and insight, Clark now offers his many admirers one final volume of history - his own.

Review Xenos Books / Letters from Dwight Publication date: 1998-06
Dewey code: 818.5409
Price: $13.00

Review Letters from Dwight / Xenos Books:

A "down and out" memoir describing slum life in Southern California. The author, an ex-professor of Russia, rents rooms on Dwight Avenue (Riverside) to an incredible series of oddballs, meanwhile trying to keep up with events in the collapsing Soviet Union and to maintain contact with his broken family. His letters, transcribed from cassette recordings sent in the 1980's, describe the most ordinary and yet fantastic experiences: going to a strange Halloween party, living with a religious maniac, reading aloud to friends with a barn owl perched on his shoulder, visiting his hometown (Washington DC) and getting lost on the beltway, discovering the filthiest toilets in the world (Moscow), dealing with crazy Russians, debating with professors at the university, running madly after sex, suffering serious injury in karate class, riding in an ambulance with bullets whistling all around, freaking out from the medications. It's an unusual ride with an author who speaks with urgency, irony and brutal wit.

Review An Historical Account of the Rise and Progress of the Colonies of South Carolina and Georgia / IndyPublish.com:

He assured the Governor, that though he had been wounded in his younger years, and was now old, yet he would meet him half way for this purpose, if he should even be carried on the backs of his people. Accordingly, Governor Glen appointed a place for holding a congress, and agreed to meet the warrior; for as the clouds were gathering every where on the American horizon, the friendship of the Cherokees at such a time was an object of too much importance to Carolina to be overlooked or neglected.
