Review Fred Cumberland: Building the Victorian Dream / University of Toronto Press:

In the first comprehensive study of Frederic William Cumberland (1820-1881), Geoffrey Simmins traces Cumberland's career as architect, railway manager, and politician, providing a richly detailed history and analysis of his contribution to Toronto's urban landscape. The architect of such prominent buildings as the University of Toronto's University College, Osgoode Hall, and St James's Cathedral, Cumberland was devoted to building the Victorian dream - optimistic and materialistic in its outlook, yet also spiritual in its basis. His diverse interests and accomplishments make him an important figure in Canadian architecture and in Victorian studies more generally. Of modest origins, but fuelled by ambition and talent, Cumberland emigrated from England seeking new opportunities. Favourable family connections provided him with an introduction to leading members of Toronto society, and he and his wife, Wilmot, formed long-lasting associations with such prominent families as the Ridouts and the Gzowskis. Drawing on letters and other archival materials, Simmins shows Cumberland to have been a witty, intelligent man, an acerbic social critic, a loving father and husband, and a respected businessman and politician who became a confidant of Sir John A. Macdonald. Through the mists of the Victorian past, a powerful and energetic figure emerges, a man of vision, tenacity, and commitment. The book is divided into three parts. Part One establishes the context of Cumberland's life and times. [+]
Part Two is devoted to examining his architectural career. Part Three consists of a catalogue raisonnT of all of Cumberland's architectural designs.

Review Voyage to the Northwest Side of America: The Journals of James Colnett, 1786-89 / UBC Press:

The journal of James Colnett is the last unpublished account of the early maritime fur trade on the Northwest Coast. Between 1786 and 1789, Colnett’s expedition traversed the coast from Prince William Sound to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Its members were the first Europeans to encounter the Tsimshian and the southern Heiltsuk, and the first to land on the southern Queen Charlotte Islands. The journal is reproduced with full scholarly apparatus, as well as with extracts from a second journal by Andrew Bracey Taylor, 3rd mate on one of the ships in Colnett’s command. Focusing on the expedition’s remarkable encounters with the Native peoples of the Northwest Coast, Galois’ introductory essay also addresses the geopolitical context of the voyage and the intellectual background that shaped the writing of the journals. This fascinating account gives us a new understanding of early European presence in the Northwest and of Native responses to these developments. It will interest historians, geographers, and ethnographers of the Northwest Coast and beyond.

Review Captain Alex Maclean: Jack London's Sea Wolf / University of British Columbia Press:

Alex MacLean was a sailor and sealer, originally from Cape Breton, who was the inspiration for the title character Wolf Larsen in Jack London's best-selling novel, "The Sea-Wolf". When he was just 21, MacLean sailed to the Pacific side of North America, where he operated for 35 years. He was a skilful sailor and a colourful individual whose achievements and escapades while in the Victoria pelagic fleet in the 1880s laid the foundation for his status as a folk hero. "Captain Alex MacLean: Jack London's Sea Wolf" is not only the story of this fascinating character but also the construction of his legend. MacLean's biography opens a new window into the complex world of pelagic sealing in the North Pacific. The sealing dispute brought the United States and Britain to the brink of war, with Canadian sealing interests frequently enmeshed in webs of espionage, scientific debate, diplomatic negotiations, and vexing questions of maritime and environmental law. MacLean's story will appeal to maritime historians, historians of the Pacific Northwest, and readers interested in the history of sealing, international relations, and environmental politics. It will also appeal to readers interested in this fascinating character, both in his own right and as mythologized by Jack London.

Review The Diaries of Northrop Frye, 1942-1955 (Collected Works of Northrop Frye) / University of Toronto Press:

With the publication of Fearful Symmetry in 1947, Northrop Frye gained wide renown as a literary theorist, a reputation that continued to build throughout his lifetime. This volume in the Collected Works provides a transcription of the seven books of diaries that Frye kept intermittently from 1942 until 1955. During the period of the final six diaries, 1949 - 1955, Frye was at work on Anatomy of Criticism, and he refers frequently to many of the essays written during this period that became a part of the book that brought him international acclaim. For Frye, diary-writing was a tool for recording "everything of importance" and this ruled out very little. His entries contain a large measure of self-analysis and self-revelation, and in this respect are confessional - we see his sanguine humour, dark moods and claustrophobia, along with the more self-congratulatory aspects of his character. But the volume also serves as a chronicle. Peering over Frye's shoulder, we watch him teach his classes, plan his career, record his dreams, register his frank reactions to the hundreds of people who cross his path, eye attractive women, reflect on books, music and movies, ponder religious and political issues, consider his various physical and psychological ailments, practise the piano, visit bookstores, frequent Toronto restaurants, and record scores of additional activities, mundane and otherwise. The volume is fully annotated and contains a directory that identifies the more than 1200 people who make an appearance. Published here for the first time, these chronicles provide an unprecedented view of the life and times of this now-legendary scholar.
