Review Talcott Parsons (International Library of Essays in the History of Social and Political Thought) / Ashgate Publishing:Talcott Parsons is probably the most important and influential US sociologist of the twentieth century. His career spanned the early formation of sociology as an academic discipline and he was active during a key period of its institutionalization in the USA in the 1940s and 1950s, when his structural-functional theory of social systems was most influential. His approach fell from favour in the 1970s in a political climate more attuned to issues of conflict and change and few sociologists of subsequent generations self-consciously identified themselves with it, although it remained the critical foil against which alternative positions were defined. This collection brings together, for the first time, the leading essays covering the work of Parsons, introduced and contextualized by a detailed essay written by the editor.

Review Ludwig Wittgenstein, Cambridge Letters: Correspondence With Russell, Keynes, Moore, Ramsey and Sraffa / Blackwell Pub:The discovery, in various quarters, of hitherto unknown letters exchanged between Wittgenstein and the chief of his Cambridge friends has stimulated the editors to produce a fundamentally new volume. Their notes too are based on archival material not previously explored. Wittgenstein's correspondents here are not his disciples but those he recognized as his mentors - Bertrand Russell, G. E. Moore, J. M. Keynes, and later Frank Ramsey and (represented by a single but important letter) Piero Sraffa. Often their reactions are as interesting as his own. Wittgenstein appears as in turn shy and affectionate, fierce and censorious, happy to collaborate and sure of his own judgement. Four quarrels and four reconciliations are documented. [+]
Wittgenstein's struggles to publish his "Tractatus" can be followed, his retreat from the world, his being wooed back to philosophy, all in the end reversed. A constant theme, despite ambivalence, is the pull of the Cambridge that these friends represented. It was as important to his as his solitudes, for it was from there, true to its motto, that he drew light and draughts of inspiration.

Review Stress: Conceptual and Biological Aspects / John Wiley & Sons:Despite the growing literature on the subject of stress, there are surprisingly few publications which integrate the different areas of stress research. This timely and accessible book describes the relationship between behavioural phenomena and the biological foundations of stress. A range of definitions of this subject are discussed such as external stressors, hormonal states and pathological consequences, highlighting the difficulties and ambiguities in the use of the term ‘stress. The book illustrates how stress arises when behavioural and coping mechanisms fail to allow organisms to respond effectively to environmental challenges. Other topics include the hypothalamic—pituitary—adrenocortical system and the sympathetic adreno-medullary systems and how they react to stressors, stress induced analgesia, immune system interactions and stereotypies. The use of a model of coping is the focal point, involving either active or passive coping strategies. Written by an author who has extensive experience in the field of behavioural science, the book will have a wide audience including advanced level undergraduates and postgraduates in psychology, physiology, medicine, ethology and veterinary sciences, as well as research scientists in these areas. "A remarkably perspicuous analysis of the nature and controls of stress. The author has integrated in beautiful fashion a bewildering and diverse scientific literature into an organized and compelling presentation. This book should be read by any psychologists, neuroscientists, physiologists or other individual interested in the topic of stress. [+]

Review Nasir Al-Din Al-Tusi's Memoir on Astronomy Volume II / Springer-Verlag:Tusi (1201-1274 a. d. ) was an Arabic scholar whose writings became the standard texts in several disciplines for several centuries. They include editions of Euclid's Elements and Ptolemy's Almagest, as well as other books on mathematics and astronomy, and books on logic, ethics, religion. He wrote the Tadhkira, to be "a summary account of `astronomy' presented in narrative form. The details are expounded and proofs of the validity are furnished in the Almagest. Indeed, ours would not be a complete science if taken in isolation from the Almagest for it is a report of what is established therein. " It is thus not only a sort of running commentary on the Almagest, but also an account of medieval Arabic cosmology. Jamil Ragep has not only translated the text of the Tadhkira, but has also provided a lengthy introduction with a biography of Tusi and a discussion of the context in which the Tadhkira was written and its influence, as well as a detailed and thorough commentary on each section of the text.
