Review Understanding Dennis Robertson: The Man and His Work / Edward Elgar Publishing:

In this fascinating study Gordon Fletcher explores the relationship between the life and work of one of Britain's most distinguished economists, Sir Dennis Holme Robertson (1890-1963). Drawing on a wealth of previously unpublished material, novel forms of evidence - both biographical and literary, together with a fresh reading of Robertson's principal books and essays, Fletcher argues that Robertsonian economics is indelibly stamped with the impression of Robertson the man and that by better understanding the man we shall better understand his economics. He shows that this is particularly the case with respect to the way in which Robertson's thought developed and to its particular characteristics, which have often been described by commentators but never explained. Most interestingly, he accounts for Robertson's breach with his Cambridge colleague J. M. Keynes. With these insights we glimpse the hidden human face of what is all too often regarded as the bloodless discipline, the dismal science.

Review Daniel Webster: A Bibliography (Bibliographies of American Notables) / Praeger Publishers:

Daniel Webster captured the hearts and imagination of the American people of the first half of the nineteenth century. This bibliography on Webster brings together for the first time a comprehensive guide to the vast amount of literature written by and about this extraordinary man who dwarfed most of his contemporaries. This bibliography also provides references to materials on slavery, the tariff, banking, Indian affairs, legal and constitutional development, international affairs, western expansion, and economic and political developments in general. This bibliography is divided into fifteen sections and covers every aspect of Webster's distinguished career. Sections I and II deal primarily with Webster's writings and with those of his contemporaries. Sections III through X cover the literature dealing with his family background; childhood and education, his long service in the United States House of Representatives and in the Senate, his two stints as secretary of state, and his career in law. Section X provides guidance in locating materials relating to his associates. Finally, Sections XI through XV provide coverage of his personal life, his death, historiographical materials, and iconography.

Review The History and Poetics of Scientific Biography (Science, Technology and Culture, 1700û1945) / Ashgate Pub Co:

Biographies of scientists carry an increasingly prominent role in today's publishing climate. Traditional historical and sociological accounts of science are complemented by narratives that emphasize the importance of the scientific subject in the production of science. Not least is the realization that the role of science in culture is much more accessible when presented through the lives of its practitioners. Taken as a genre, such biographies play an important role in the public understanding of science. In recent years, there has been an increasing number of monographs and collections about biography in general and literary biography in particular. However, biographies of scientists, engineers and medical doctors have rarely been the topic of scholarly inquiry. As such, this volume of essays will be welcomed by those interested in the genre of science biography, and who wish to re-examine its history, foundational problems and theoretical implications. Borrowing approaches and methods from cultural studies and the history, philosophy and sociology of science, the contributions cover a broad range of subjects, periods and locations. By presenting such a rich diversity of essays, the volume is able to chart the reoccurring conceptual problems and devices that have influenced scientific biographies from classical antiquity to the present day. In so doing, it provides a compelling overview of the history of the genre, suggesting that the different valuations given scientific biography over time have been largely fuelled by vested professional interests.

Publication date: 1985
Price: $24.95

Review The Noble Traveller: The Life and Writings of O. V. de L. Milosz / Lindisfarne Books:

"Transmitted by oral tradition to initiates of the Middle Ages and of modern times, Noble Traveller is the secret name of initiates of antiquity. The last time that it was pronounced in public was on May 30, 1786, in Paris at a session of Parliament devoted to the cross-examination of a famous defendant, victim of a pamphleteer, Theveneau de Morande. Initiates’ wanderings did not differ from ordinary travels for study except that their itinerary, though apparently haphazard, rigorously coincided with the adept’s most secret aspirations and gifts. " —O. V. de L. Milosz, "The Arcana," Exegetic Note, verse 46 Born in 1877, Oscar Vladislas de Lubicz Milosz was a mystical poet, metaphysician, dramatist, Biblical exegete, and novelist. His roots were Lithuanian and Jewish, whereas he was educated in France and wrote in French. The Noble Traveller contains Milosz’s two main works of mystical philosophy, "Ars Magna" and "The Arcana. " Also included: a generous selection of his poetry; an extensive chronology of his life; and photographs. [+]

Review Ashgate / Vilfredo Paretos Sociology (Rethinking Classical Sociology) Publication date: 2007-12-20
Dewey code: 301.092
List Price: $99.95
Price: $99.95

Review Vilfredo Paretos Sociology (Rethinking Classical Sociology) / Ashgate:

Vilfredo Pareto is a key figure in the history of economics and sociology. His sociological works, which attempted to merge these two disciplines, hinge upon a psychologistic analysis of society, economy and politics. Much has already been written on Pareto but this is the first book to rethink his contribution to classical sociology by focusing upon its psychological underpinning. The author locates the origins of Pareto's psychologistic approach to sociology, both within the history of Italian thought, and within Pareto's own experiences of business and politics. He then evaluates Pareto's sociology through the lens of contemporary social science, to reach the conclusion that its explanatory power may well be growing rather than diminishing, as levels of social and epistemological complexity rise. The author also looks at Pareto's assumptions concerning human personality through the lens of contemporary psychology, showing that Pareto's sociology is likely to be of particular value to those interested in political psychology. The book concludes with a psychometric study of Westminster MPs which clarifies and attests to Pareto's contemporary relevance, leaving readers with the thought that practitioners of politics may also gain much by reading Pareto.

Publication date: 1996-02-02
Dewey code: 301.092
List Price: $160.00
Price: $117.75

Review Daniel Bell (Key Sociologists) / Routledge:

Daniel Bell is perhaps the most famous sociologist of his generation. He has been hailed as the prophet of the emergence of a new society-the post-industrial society- and as one of the leading conservative critics of contemporary culture. Malcolm Waters presents a clear introduction to Bell's arguments and a critical appreciation of the strengths and weaknesses of his work. He draws mainly on the three books that have made Bell famous, The End of Ideology, The Coming of Postindustrial Society and The Cultural Contradictions of Capitalism, but Waters also covers lesser-known works on education and social forecasting. Daniel Bell is a thoroughly comprehensive account of the work of a key, albeit highly controversial, contemporary sociological figure.

Review Emperor Of Scent: A Story Of Perfume, Obsession, And The Last Mystery Of The Senses / Diane Pub Co:

Luca Turin was born with an uncannily powerful nose, able to distinguish the components of any scent, from the world's most refined perfumes to the air on the New York subways. A scientist, he kept his powers to himself, concentrating on other fields. But when, for the love of it, he began to write reviews of fragrances, and those reviews took the world by storm, everything changed. The secret world of scent creation opened up, and Turin discovered something astonishing: No one understands how our noses work. Billions and billions of dollars are spent creating the scents all around us in a manner that amounts to a glorified trial and error. The solution to the mystery of every other human sense had led to a Nobel Prize. Why should smell be any different? Turin has given his life to this great riddle. And in the end, incredibly, after an epic struggle, he solved it. Then things got really interesting. [+]
Chandler Burr tells the extraordinary story of Luca Turin, his incredible sense of smell and his battles with the scientific establishment in as a remarkable quirky a tale of obsession as Susan Orlean's bestseller "The Orchid Thief".

Review The Philosopher's Autobiography: A Qualitative Study / Praeger Publishers:

Throughout the ages philosophers have examined their own lives in an attempt both to find some meaning and to explain the roots of their philosophical perspectives. This volume is an introduction to philosophical autobiography, a rich but hitherto ignored literary genre that questions the self, its social context, and existence in general. The author analyzes representative narratives from antiquity to postmodernity, focusing in particular on three case studies: the autobiographies of St. Augustine, Rousseau, and Sartre. Through the study of these exemplary texts, philosophical reflection on the self emerges as a valid alternative to Freudian psychoanalysis and as a way of promoting self-renewal and change.

Dewey code: 301.092
List Price: $99.95

Review The Sociology of Zygmunt Bauman / Ashgate:

Zygmunt Bauman is one of the most inspirational and controversial thinkers on the scene of contemporary sociology. For several decades he has provided compelling analyses and diagnoses of a vast variety of aspects of modern and liquid modern living. His work is increasingly popularized, appraised and adopted. This book considers the theoretical significance of his contribution to sociology, but also discusses and adopts a critical stance towards his work. "The Sociology of Zygmunt Bauman" introduces and critically appraises some of the most significant as well as some of the lesser known and overlooked of Bauman's contributions to contemporary sociology: ethics, freedom, utopia, genocide, metaphors, ambivalence, politics, strangers, globalization, power and consumerism. In this collection, an international team of scholars delineates and discusses how Bauman's treatment of these themes challenges conventional wisdom in sociology, thereby revising and revitalizing sociological theory. As a special feature, the book concludes with Bauman's intriguing reflections and contemplations on his own life and intellectual trajectory published here for the first time in English. In this postscript aptly entitled 'Pro Domo Sua' ('About Myself'), he describes the pushes and pulls that throughout the years have shaped his thinking.
