His theory of the civilizing process is widely recognized as a seminal contribution to sociological understanding. He also developed a distinctive approach to social study, which he termed figurational or process sociology. Review Maritime Enterprise and Empire: Sir William Mackinnon and His Business Network, 1823-1893 / Boydell Press:This book explores the nineteenth century roots of globalisation through the activities of the enterprise network created by the Scottish merchant, William Mackinnon. It follows the rise of the family-led business group from its modest origins in Scotland to its transformation into the world's largest maritime and mercantile conglomerate, tracing the history of the various shipping firms within the group - including the British India, Netherlands India and Australasian United companies - and identifies the key factors behind its domination of coastal steamshipping around the Indian Ocean and into the western Pacific. Review Freedom and Consumerism / Ashgate:How does Bauman understand the concept of freedom? How does this understanding relate to the political traditions of conervatism, liberalism and socialism? Mark Davis offers a critical enquiry into the sociology of Zygmunt Bauman, focusing on his English-language writings from the 1960s onwards. The book has two principal aims. First, it makes a contribution to sociological debates about modern society by offering an interpretation of Bauman's work based on the concept of freedom. Davis argues that existing studies of Bauman have tended to focus uncritically upon other salient themes in his work, notably culture, power and socialism. He aims to repair the lack of critical engagement in the literature, by identifying freedom as a focus for critical reflection, a concept which he argues has thematic continuity in Bauman's writing, especially in terms of his extensive consideration of consumerism. Second, Davis aims to open up new areas of discourse around Bauman's work by analysing his understanding of freedom in relation to the three great political traditions of conservatism, liberalism and socialism. This is an original contribution to discussions around Bauman's work which will be of interest to both sociologists and political theorists.

There is in business an actual firing line where continuous conflict wages, and so fierce does the struggle become that it requires a certain class of men possessing qualities, not only of energy and perseverance, but of tenacity and combativeness, aggressive and determined to fight to the last ditch for commercial supremacy. Such men do not always rely upon the merits of their cause, nor do they stop to question the justice or injustice of their methods. They have but one goal, commercial supremacy, and every effort is bent and every man and method utilized to attain that end. Men of inventive genius are rarely of that type. They are more often unassuming and averse to anything like a personal combat. Such a man was Obed Hussey, inventor of the reaper. Honest and conscientious, enured to hard and unremitting toil, with the inspiration of a new idea for the benefit of mankind burning in his brain, he applied himself in the face of immense difficulties to the production and perfection of the great gift which he gave to the world. He was a man at once so humble and so broad in his kindness, so loyal to his Quaker ideals of righteousness and justice, that he offered no protests, or arguments against his rivals and opponents other than the superiority of his own machine. Only his great genius which produced the superior machine (a fact which no one could possibly contradict) could have saved him from the fierce opposition of his more powerful rivals. [+]One has only to read from some of his own letters reproduced in this narrative, to witness the fairness of his attitude, or to gain a knowledge of his scruples. Yet it was just this which has operated to deprive Obed Hussey of his well deserved fame as inventor of the reaper. Moreover, a great industry, fostered by his opponents in the patent controversy, has grown up, the basis and life of which is Obed Hussey's invention of the reaper. It would seem that the vast fortunes made from this industry should be ample reward for those who are receiving the benefits of a man's life work without whose genius it would never have been. In 1897 there was published in Chicago a booklet entitled "A Brief Narrative of the Invention of Reaping Machines," a large part of which is reproduced in this book. The pamphlets of which the narrative was a republication were from the pen of Edward Stabler, an able man and a mechanic of great skill and ability, a close friend of Mr. Hussey and one familiar with his reaper and with all the facts which he set forth in these articles. Such other facts and information as are published herein were furnished by Martha Hussey, daughter of Mr. Hussey, now living and by my uncle, Hon. Alexander B. Lamberton, who married Mr. Hussey's widow. Mr. Lamberton is a man of high standing, having for many years taken an active part in the affairs of Rochester. He was President of the Rochester Chamber of Commerce, 1901-1904 (three successive terms), and has been President of the Rochester Park Board for the past eleven years. He also won national fame as a hunter and naturalist and was President of the National Association for the Protection of Fish and Game. His relation to the Hussey family has made him conversant with the whole history of the invention of the reaper and of Mr. Hussey's early struggles.

Review Karl Mannheim and the Legacy of Max Weber (Rethinking Classical Sociology) / Ashgate:This book focuses on the important work of Karl Mannheim by demonstrating how his theoretical conception of a reflexive sociology took shape as a collaborative empirical research program. The authors show how contemporary work along these lines, whether derived from Foucault, Bourdieu or other theorists, can benefit from the insights of Mannheim and his students into both morphology and genealogy. Inspired by recent receptions of Karl Mannheim that do not restrict themselves to familiar arguments about the sociology of knowledge, the book contains three themes. First it offers a new reading of Mannheim's 'empirical' project, with emphasis on his lifelong dialogue with Max Weber. Special attention is paid to his article on 'economic ambition. ' Second, the book analyzes the work arising out of Mannheim's Frankfurt research group, notably the early writings of Norbert Elias, Hans Speier, and Hans Gerth, as well as dissertations by Mannheim's students, including studies of newspapers, women's household roles, sentimentalism in women's literature, relations between female social workers and male bureaucrats, exile, Jewish assimilation, and Liberal 'cultivation. ' Finally, the book contributes to the microsociology of knowledge, uncovering the modalities that made for an open working group in Frankfurt that was expressly not a school. The book returns Mannheim's sociology of knowledge inquiries into the broader context of a wider project in historical and cultural sociology, whose promising development was disrupted and then partially obscured by the expulsion of Mannheim's intellectual generation. It is about Karl Mannheim as he served his most productive - and independent - students and not as he has been stereotyped in the literature. As such, it will appeal to sociologists concerned with the contemporary relevance of his work, and who are prepared for a fresh look at Weimar sociology and the legacy of Max Weber.

Review Admirals of the World: A Biographical Dictionary, 1500 to the Present / Mcfarland & Co Inc Pub:This biographical dictionary provides short biographies of more than 500 individuals who have served as admiral, vice admiral, or rear admiral in the world's naval forces. While naval officers from the American, British, French, and Japanese navies make up the bulk of the work, several biographies are included on admirals from 22 countries, including Australia, Canada, Germany, India, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, and Spain. While the majority of entries are fairly detailed, some are considerably shorter because of limited naval records or lack of available information. The main criteria for inclusion was that each person must have actively served in the rank of at least rear admiral, although each individual did not necessarily become involved in enemy action over the course of his or her career. This effectively rules out people who were granted the rank on retirement or as a courtesy title, or, as in the case of several 'tombstone admirals', who were granted the title posthumously. The book also includes a list of the admirals organized by nationality, a timeline, and a general index.
