Review Margaret H'Doubler: The Legacy of America's Dance Education Pioneer / Cambria Press:This pioneering collection of articles presents a fresh look at the life, work and seminal contributions of Margaret H'Doubler, the pioneering dance educator who established the first dance major in higher education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1926. This anthology is unique, given that it is the first thorough critique of Margaret H'Doubler's life, career, and philosophies. The book is also timely in its inclusion of so many authentic voices, speaking from their first hand experience with the master from as early as the late 1920s to the present, now twenty-three years after H'Doubler's death. The book completes a task that is due any original thinker and practitioner in the course of her or his lifetime, but remarkably, was not in the case of Margaret H'Doubler. Margaret H'Doubler is a significant new contribution to the historic record, and an extraordinary resource for dance scholars, educators and students.

Review The Life and Thought of Aurel Kolnai / Ashgate Publishing:Aurel Kolnai was born to Jewish parents in Budapest on the 5th of December, 1900. He died in a London hospital of a heart attack on June 28th, 1973. During those 72 years he lived, successively, in Budapest, Vienna, Paris, New York, Boston, Quebec and, finally, London. Kolnai is primarily known in English and American academic circles as a moral philosopher and conservative political thinker, though in Vienna he is perhaps better known as a member of the Psychoanalytical Association, and then again as a Christian leftist journalist. Although he never held or tried for political office, he was engaged on the fringe of the 1918 "Chrysanthemum Revolution" in Hungary, and then again as part of the Christian democratic movement in Austria when the country began to move towards fascism. Apart from that, he was always active as a philosophically inclined writer on politics, with special attention to National Socialism in the 1930s, and, during the early years of the Cold War, to Communism. This biography covers Kolnai's life and career, and discusses his personality. Kolnai's own memoirs say very little about his own writings, apart from sketching out the main themes of the most important of them. Therefore this study includes some account of nearly everything he published, including his journalism, and much of what still remains unpublished. The author has not been primarily concerned with an assessment of Kolnai's thought, but seeks to offer the reader an orientation in Kolnai's oeuvre.

Review The Hidden Structure: A Scientific Biography of Camillo Golgi / Oxford University Press, USA:Camillo Golgi (1843-1926) is widely regarded as one of the founders of modern neuroscience. In 1873, he discovered the black reaction - a histological stain which proved to be a revolutionary method for studying the structure of the nervous system. To this day, the Golgi stain is widely used. And for every student of medicine or biology, Golgi's name is synonymous with one of the basic structures in the cell: Golgi Apparatus. He discovered the apparatus in 1898 and, as a result, is among the most widely cited biologist in scientific literature. But this was only one of Golgi's many contributions to scientific research. He also devised a system for the classification of neurons on the basis of axonal distribution, identified a type of cell in the cerebellum, and described the malarial cycle in the human. His discoveries were rich with therapeutic implications, and his remarkable achievements earned him a Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1906. Most books of biology or medicine point out that Golgi is one of the giants of 19th Century scientific endeavor, but he continues to remain a relatively unknown figure in the history of neuroscience and cell biology. This long-awaited biography, in a new translation from the Italian, is a fascinating analysis of Golgi's experiments, ideas, and personal life. [+]
It is welcomed by anyone who has ever learned about his brilliant discoveries but wondered about Golgi, the person. In fact, all those with an interest in the history of science, and cell biology in particular, as well as those involved in neuroscience, medicine, and biochemistry will benefit from this book.

Review Fragments: Interviews with Jean Baudrillard / Routledge:Fragments presents a set of brilliantly intriguing interviews with Jean Baudrillard whose work today occupies center stage in the analysis of consumerism, terrorism, and contemporary culture. In these frank discussions with François L'Yvonnet, Baudrillard reveals for the first time in detail the thinkers who have been the dominant influences on his work during his career. Instead of examining his work as a project of intellectual accumulation, he challenges all the major interpretations of his work by suggesting he has always adopted an anti-system, anti-totality strategy. Even globalization is accompanied in his view by a Western culture which itself is no longer a well-founded confident universalism. Perhaps most interestingly, Baudrillard discusses his life's work in relationship to his contemporaries - Bataille , Barthes, Lyotard and Deleuze - and explores his position as an outsider in the field of French philosophy. Baudrillard in these interviews is in sparkling form, and in his own words he presents not only a lively introduction to this great thinker but also gives readers a window into a brilliant mind.

Review Correspondance g?n?rale d'Helv?tius, Volume IV: 1774-1800 / Lettres 721-855 (University of Toronto Romance Series) / University of Toronto Press:This is the fourth of five volumes of the letters of the French philosopher Claude Adrien HelvTtius (1715-1771), author of the controversial De l'Esprit (1758). Featuring the correspondence of Mme HelvTtius, nTe Anne Catherine de Ligniville (1722-1800), in the years following her husband's death, this volume also includes letters by and to HelvTtius discovered since the publication of the first three volumes. Mme HelvTtius enjoyed an active widowhood, welcoming to her salon in Auteuil a group of intellectuals who came to be known as the IdTologues. A close friend of Benjamin Franklin, she was involved in political events before and during the French Revolution, as well as in Napoleon's coup d'Ttat. In the last letter of the series her grandson describes her burial in her garden, which took place without religious or revolutionary ceremony in the presence of all her favourite pets. Most of the newly discovered letters are addressed to HelvTtius by figures as important as d'Alembert, Boulanger, Chastellux, Saint-Lambert, Servan, Thieriot, and Trublet. Some of these complete an existing exchange, others provide dates for letters already published. The fifth and final volume will be devoted primarily to a comprehensive index. It will also include a chronological list of all the letters, corrections and modifications, and other useful material.

Review Carl Gustav Jung (Key Figures in Counselling and Psycho Therapy Series) (Key Figures in Counselling and Psychotherapy series) / Sage Publications Ltd:`This book offers a fresh and full introduction to Jung's psychology - it will be appreciated by many, from novice counsellors to the well-read analyst who will find. that there is much to learn about C G Jung' - Journal of Analytical Psychology `Ann Casement achieves an almost impossible task in her contribution to this useful series from SAGE, namely to create a lively overview of a complex man and his equally complex contributuions to analytic psychotherapy. Casement achieves in this short book what Jung may have hoped to do when he reported a dream following a meeting with a publisher who was encouraging him to write a popular text of his ideas for the non-specialist. He had rejected the idea out of hand, but later he had a dream that changed his mind. "Jung found himself `standing in a public place addressing a great multitude of people who were listening to him with rapt attention and understanding what he said'" ' - Self & Society `Clearly written and well-informed, this impressive book is likely to become the single volume of choice for those psychotherapists and counsellors engaging with Jung and Jungian psychology as part of their training (whether wholly Jungian or more pluralistic). [+]
Ann Casement writes as an informed and enthusiastic insider who has also managed to retain her critical distance - hence what she has to say will also be relevant to more experienced readers' - Andrew Samuels, University of Essex Carl Gustav Jung is an enlightening and insightful guide to the life and work of one of the founding fathers of psychotherapy and most influential thinkers in modern times. Combining insights from his early life and his wide-ranging intellectual interests in philosophy, mysticism and parapsychology, Ann Casement traces the development of Jung's ideas on the functioning of the human mind, including the origins of core Jungian concepts such as archetypes, teleology, alchemy and the collective unconscious. Examining the relationship between Freud and Jung through their prolific correspondence, the author charts the growing divergence of opinion, which culminated in the birth of analytical psychology, the branch of psychotherapy established by Jung. Notwithstanding his unquestionable contribution to modern intellectual thought, Jung has been subject to severe criticism, including allegations of anti-Semitism and sympathy with the Nazi party. The book sets out clearly both the arguments levelled against Jung and responses to his critics. Particularly for the reader new to Jungian thinking, this book places the central concepts fully into context and provides the ideal starting point for further study of Jung and his work. Ann Casement is a Jungian Analyst in Private Practice, London and Chair of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy. Her previous publications include Post-Jungians Today.

Review Revisiting Vietnam: Memoirs, Memorials, Museums (Literary Criticism and Cultural Theory) / Routledge:This book explores the memorializing practices of American veterans of the Vietnam War at several of the most significant contemporary sites of memory in the United States and Vietnam. These sites include veterans' memoirs, museum exhibits, replicas of the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and tourism to Vietnam. Because war memorializing has, since the late 1960s, shifted focus from national soul searching to personal identity and recovery, I emphasize how contemporary narratives of the war, shaped more by memory than by history, often are detached from the specific history of the war and its political controversies. Drawing on trauma and cultural memory scholarship, as well as empirical data gathered during field research in the U. S. and Vietnam, the author examines how veterans' memorializing practices have become increasingly individualized, commodified, and conservative since the early 1980s.

Review Cecile and Oskar Vogt: The Visionaries of Modern Neuroscience / Springer:The last decades of the past century have brought relentless progress in molecular genetics, opening dramatic opportunities for modifying human life by gene therapy or by cloning new human beings endowed with programmed characteristics. In this frenzy of new discoveries the names of Cécile and Oskar Vogt, who one hundred years ago envisaged these developments and laid the foundation for modern, genetically oriented neuroscience, have been practically forgotten. This makes most timely the treatise by Igor Klatzo, who, shortly after World War II, spent several years with the Vogts at their Brain Research Institute in the Black Forest, Germany, and then continued his brain research as the Chief of the Laboratory of Neuropathology and Neuroanatomical Sciences at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. The greatness of the Vogts is based both on their penetrating vision of the future for brain research and on the sterling quality of their character, which sustained a "test of fire" during the Nazi years in Germany. Klatzo brings, in addition to the recognition of the Vogts' greatness in pioneering modern brain research, a lively picture of their personalities, which includes their struggles against the rigid rules of society, and against political suppression, the latter associated with the risk of their lives.

Review Autobiography / Routledge:"Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and the unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither. over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair. " - Bertrand Russell Champion of intellectual, social and sexual freedom, campaigner for peace and for civil and human rights, Bertrand Russell remains one of the greatest and most complex and controversial figures of the twentieth century. His childhood was bitterly lonely but rich in experience. His adulthood was spent grappling with both his own beliefs and the problems of the universe and mankind, and the pursuit of love and permanent happiness which resulted in five marriages. This new edition of Russell's Autobiography, available for the first time in one volume, shares a life of incredible variety, and is told with vigor, charm and total frankness.
