Review Whittaker: Struggles of a Supreme Court Justice (Contributions in Legal Studies) / Greenwood Press:

A Kansas farm boy, who talked his way into law school despite his lack of a high school diploma, Charles E. Whittaker was admitted to the bar before graduation and became the stereotype of a demanding, workaholic attorney. In a thirty-year practice representing Midwest corporations, he became universally admired among Missouri lawyers, and the American Bar Association called him one of the best selections ever made for the Supreme Court. Yet the very characteristics that made Whittaker one of the most acclaimed choices ensured that his service would be catastrophic both for the Court and for him. By the time he left that bench, legal scholars considered his performance on the Court as one of the saddest. Whittaker was apolitical, yet won judicial appointments requiring strong support from politicians of national strength. He was a hard-line "law and order" judge who was horrified by the death penalty. During the turbulent 1960s, he called for rational discussion of public issues, yet gave inflammatory speeches linking the civil rights movement to Communism. He was the epitome of his era's Main Street conservatism. Most biographies of justices deal with those who had great influence on law and society. [+]
From an institutional standpoint, however, this study of "a justice who failed" sharpens our understanding of how the U. S. Supreme Court differs from other judicial bodies and fills a surprising gap in the Court's history.

Review Revealing New Worlds: Three Victorian Women Naturalists (Women in Science) / Routledge:

Victorian women certainly recognized that male naturalists were not always willing to welcome them warmly into their inner sanctum of scientific work, honor and prestige. This book examines the ability of women to understand themselves and respond to their needs as complex human beings. Within a framework of socially and scientifically constructed norms, these Victorian women used science as a path to self awareness and intellectual accomplishment.

Review Kessinger Publishing / Making of a Stockbroker Publication date: 2003-05
Dewey code: 813
Price: $31.95

Review Making of a Stockbroker / Kessinger Publishing:

1925. This volume contains the story behind the making of a stockbroker, that being John K. Wing, the senior resident partner of Bronson and Barnes, a Boston firm which had risen to the top rank of stock commission houses in the early 1900s. Wing was a young man, with pleasant manners and an air of sincerity as well as good nature and good sense. This combination interested the author. It meant the modern type of successful stockbroker. Other times, other men. The change is never in the eternal verities but in the point of view, which in turn dictates the fashion that finds a new and easier way.

Review The Wonderful World of Simon Stevin / WIT Press:

This book gives a comprehensive picture of the activities and the creative heritage of Simon Stevin, who made outstanding contributions to various fields of science in particular, physics and mathematics and many more. Among the striking spectrum of his ingenious achievements, it is worth emphasizing that Simon Stevin is rightly considered as the father of decimal fractions as they are in use today. Stevin also urged the universal use of decimal fractions along with standardization in coinage, measures and weights. This was a most visionary proposal. Stevin was the first since Archimedes to make a significant new contribution to statics and hydrostatics. He truly was "homo universalis". The impact of Stevin's work has been multilateral and worldwide, includingliterature (William Shakespeare), science (from Christian Huygens to Richard Feynman), Politics (Thomas Jefferson) and many other fields. Thomas Jefferson, together with Alexander Hamilton and Robert Morris, advocated introducing the decimal monetary unit in the USA with reference to the book "De Thiende" by S. Stevin and in particular to the English translation of the book: "Disme: The Art of Tenths" by Robert Norton. In accordance with thetitle of this translation, the name of the first silver coin issued in the USA in 1792 was "disme" (since 1837 the spelling changed to ("dime"). [+]
It wasconsidered as a symbol of national independence of the USA.

Review Jean Baudrillard (Key Sociologists) / Routledge:

This uniquely engaging introduction to Jean Baudrillard’s controversial writings covers his entire career focussing on Baudrillard’s central, but little understood, notion of symbolic exchange. Through the clarification of this key term a very different Baudrillard emerges: not the nihilistic postmodernist and enemy of Marxism and Feminism that his critics have constructed, but a thinker immersed in the social world and passionately committed to a radical theorisation of it. Above all Baudrillard sought symbolic spaces, spaces where we might all, if only temporarily, shake off the system of social control. His writing sought to challenge and defy the system. By erasing our ‘liberated’ identities and suspending the pressures to compete, perform, consume and hate, that the system induces, we might create spaces not of freedom, but of symbolic engagement and exchange.

Review Max Weber Matters (Rethinking Classical Sociology) / Ashgate:

Revealing the extent to which scholars are seeking to understand both current and historical issues through the sociology of Max Weber, this book reaffirms and extends the enduring relevance of Weber's thought to contemporary cultural and political questions. Through a thematic structure designed to expose a variety of ways in which Weber's work matters with reference to a given subject, it comprises methodological reflection on Weber's historical sociology, as well as the application and testing of his ideal types in historical enquiry, often to areas that have not yet been approached in this way. With its focus on both the practical application of Weber's thought as well as his philosophical legacy, "Max Weber Matters" will be of interest to scholars across a range of disciplines, including historians, sociologists, political scientists and social theorists.

Review Popper, Hayek and the Open Society (Routledge Frontiers of Political Economy) / Routledge:

This is the first book to compare Karl Popper and Friedrich Hayek systematically, and critically assess their contribution to the political philosophy of the Open Society. Hayes compares and contrasts their views on three key areas relevant to their political philosophy; first their views on scientific method, their views on philosophy of social science and then their moral philosophy including their meta-ethical views. The author focuses on their contributions to social science methodology, their ethical views about negative utilitarianism and negative rights, and their contrasting views on Utopianism. He finishes by arguing that their versions of liberal political philosophy are both immune to Alastair MacIntyre's critique of liberal individualism and also meet his challenge to the Enlightenment project. Hayes' position is generally controversial in that he defends Popper and Hayek in areas where they are almost universally criticized, namely Hayek's notion of the meaninglessness of social justice and Popper's claim that there is no need for induction in either scientific reasoning or common sense reasoning. One main finding in this book concerns the two major problems that bedevil modern philosophy: induction and the is-ought problem. The author proposes an original solution to the is-ought problem as well to the infinite regress problem.
