Review Reading Putnam (Philosophers and Their Critics) / Blackwell Publishers:

From the philosophy of mind and language, through physics and mathematics, to the philosophy of the human sciences, morality and religion, there is almost no area of philosophy to which Hilary Putnam has not made highly original and influential contributions. This wide-ranging collection of papers provides a critical assessment and exploration of Putnam's Seminal Work. Written by Philosophers themselves well known for their work in the field, each essay bears witness to the continuing influence and importance of Putnam's thought. Putnam's reply constitutes an extensive new essay which clarifies, and develops further, central themes in his philosophy. This volume includes papers by Simon Blackburn, George Boolos, Michael Hallett, Michael Redhead, Thomas Ricketts, David Wiggins and Crispin Wright.

Review The Tangier Diaries, 1962-1979 / Cadmus Press:

Every page drips with memories, writes William Burroughs about this collection of Hopkins' diaries covering two decades of a life lived as an ex-patriot. Hopkins was one of the most influential writers living in Tangier at the time; including , among others Paul and Jane Bowles. The writing varies from poetic, reflective to vernacular and antic. The mystery of walking through the palmeraie by night. The silence of the universe blots out the noisiness of man. Hopkins wrote the preceding line on December 23, 1966, however, by the 24th, he is more interested in lanterns made of tin cans, and , a Moroccan schoolboy, [who,] hoping to start a conversation, recited all the French he learned in school: 'Bonsoir, monsieur. Quelle heure est-il?'.

Review Talcott Parsons: Critical Assessments / Routledge:

Talcott Parsons (1904-79) is widely regarded as one of the most important sociologists of the twentieth century. His work has been influential both inside and outside the United States. He made major contributions to the history of sociology, the sociology of knowledge, medical sociology, and sociology of social institutions. His theoretical writing, although still the subject of much controversy, is recognized as reformulating the grounds of debate by giving a new direction to sociological inquiry. The ninety-five articles assembled here are organized into eighty-five chapters, covering each of the major theoretical debates in which Parsons was involved. The work is divided into major sections beginning with the intellectual background to Parsons' distinctive contribution to functionalism, and ending with the work of the last twenty years of his life, in which his interests in expanding his theories across all domains of human action produced a wide range of important and influential ideas. These volumes provide an indispensable collection for Parsonian scholars and anyone interested in 20th century sociology.

Review Norbert Elias (SAGE Masters in Modern Social Thought series) / Sage Publications Ltd:

Norbert Elias (1897-1990) is now widely regarded as one of the greatest sociologists of the 20th century. The challenge and profundity of his work are still being assimilated. Some have suggested that in time, he will be regarded as the Copernicus or Darwin of sociology, the man who set the subject on its scientific course. These four volumes provide a comprehensive and penetrating survey of Elias's life and work. They pinpoint the main fields of research which Elias and his followers have explored: the civilizing process; state-formation; knowledge, religion and science; informalization; power; established-outsider figurations in fields such as class, gender and race; the sociology of the body; the sociology of the emotions; the sociology of leisure, sport and the arts; the sociology of the professions; medicine and psychoanalysis; crime and punishment; drug use and abuse. The collection also explores the various critiques of Elias's `figurational' or `process' sociology and counter-critiques by Elias's followers. The volumes successfully locate the work of Elias and his followers in the context of modern sociology, especially in relation to writers such as Mannheim, Adorno, Parsons, Goffman, Foucault and Bourdieu. In the penetrating, original and informative Introduction, Eric Dunning and Stephen Mennell elucidate Elias's sociological contributions and the bearing his life experiences had on his work. The collection is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the sociological contribution of Norbert Elias. The collection is organized in the following 4 volumes: Volume 1 Focuses on Elias's work in the context of his life and career, and reviews his place in the contemporary social sciences, especially in relation to such figures as Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu. [+]
Also discussed in this volume are Elias's pathbreaking contributions to such issues as: the 'agency-structure' dilemma; habitus; power; involvement and detachment; knowledge and the sciences; time; and the relations between history and sociology. Volume 2 Addresses Elias's major empiricallybased contributions to sociological theory, especially the theories of the civilizing process, state formation and established-outsider figurations. Also discussed are informalization and de-civilizing processes, and the applications of the established-outsider theory to such fields as race, gender and sexuality. Volume 3 Examines figurational contributions to special areas of sociology such as: the sociology of the body; the sociology of the emotions; the sociology of everyday life, sport, leisure, lifestyles, taste, music and the arts; deviance and crime; the sociology of health and illness; psychiatry, psychoanalysis, and psychology; death and dying; and drugs and tobacco use. Volume 4 Focuses on criticisms of Elias's work and the responses of Elias and his sociological followers. Key themes are: civilization and the Holocaust; sports violence, especially soccer hooliganism; the meanings and value of concepts like 'development', 'evolution' and 'change'; and the relative merits of long-term and short-term approaches. The end of the volume returns to the issue of Elias's place in contemporary sociology and the growing worldwide recognition of the significance of his contribution. Eric Dunning is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Leicester; Stephen Mennell is Professor of Sociology, University College Dublin.

Review The Works of Charles Babbage (11 Volume Set) (Works of Charles Babbage) / NYU Press:

Charles Babbage is well described as the "pioneer of the computer", but he was far more than this: his mathematic, scientific, and engineering work is highly significant for its original approach to problem-solving while the economic, political, and theological writings show an incisive appreciation of contemporary debate, and justify the growing consensus which judges Babbage to be one of the most important and rigorous intellectual polymaths of his age. This edition contains his two major papers: Inessay on the calculus of functions, which established his reputation as a mathematician, and On the economy of machinery manufacturers, which was the first work of its kind to concentrate on the manufacturing industry-a turning point in economic writing. The New York University Press edition includes a comprehensive general introduction in Volume I. Textual notes by leading international experts in the field of Babbage scholarship, such as Professor I. Bernard Cohen, Emeritus Professor of the History of Science, University of Sydney; and Dr. J. A. M. Dubey, Dean of Engineering at the Polytechnic of the South bank, consider the world spectrum of the writings and put the works in context. All new texts are brought together by a comprehensive index providing easy reference to the complete works- a facility which will allow the integration of Babbage scholarship for the first time. [+]
In addition to the standard pagination, the original page numbers have been retained to allow access from contemporary sources. there is also a comprehensive bibliography if works cited in the text- an essential reference tool for any serious scholar. The Works are illustrated throughout with the original diagrams, graphs, and line drawings. Volume 3 also contains 15 plates from Babbage's Calculating Engines (1889).

Review Florence Nightingale and the Birth of Professional Nursing (Western Influence on Japan) / Thoemmes Continuum:

This is a new six-volume set of writings by Nightingale and her contemporaries on nursing and health care in nineteenth-century England. Topics include hospital nursing, district nursing and education, all of which underwent a transformation from the mid-nineteenth century onwards as nursing became professionalized and began to enjoy increased prestige, thanks in large part to the reforming efforts of Florence Nightingale. Nightingale's thoughts are supplemented by those of Elizabeth Garrett on hospital nursing, J. Clarke Jervoise on infection, Arthur Cotton on conditions in India, and Mrs Dacre Craven and William Rathbone on district nursing. Historically, Nightingale is an important figure in nursing and sanitary reform; she published copiously in these areas, using her own experiences in England and the Crimea as a basis for her critique of medicine and medical care and for her recommendations for improvement; she promoted the professionalization of nursing; she sought to improve the conditions of hospitals by actively promoting principles of sanitation; and she was elevated to the status of national heroine during the Crimean War. Nightingale was prominent as a critic, commentator and reformer of hospitals and nursing. Her writings address the relevant issues confronted by individuals who sought to elevate nursing to a respected profession, and they offer insight into what was perceived to be a woman's special role in the healing art, the often fraught nature of the nurse's relationship to medicine, and the sanitary conditions in hospitals and homes where people lived, died and nursed the ill. This major set is edited and introduced by Dr Lori Williamson, and will be of interest for academics in the history of medicine, nursing, sanitation, social welfare, and gender studies.
