Review Filter Design with Time Domain Mask Constraints: Theory and Applications (Applied Optimization) / Springer:

Optimum envelope-constrained filter design is concerned with time-domain synthesis of a filter such that its response to a specific input signal stays within prescribed upper and lower bounds, while minimizing the impact of input noise on the filter output or the impact of the shaped signal on other systems depending on the application. In many practical applications, such as in TV channel equalization, digital transmission, and pulse compression applied to radar, sonar and detection, the soft least square approach, which attempts to match the output waveform with a specific desired pulse, is not the most suitable one. Instead, it becomes necessary to ensure that the response stays within the hard envelope constraints defined by a set of continuous inequality constraints. The main advantage of using the hard envelope-constrained filter formulation is that it admits a whole set of allowable outputs. From this set one can then choose the one which results in the minimization of a cost function appropriate to the application at hand. The signal shaping problems so formulated are semi-infinite optimization problems. This monograph presents in a unified manner results that have been generated over the past several years and are scattered in the research literature. The material covered in the monograph includes problem formulation, numerical optimization algorithms, filter robustness issues and practical examples of the application of envelope constrained filter design. Audience: Postgraduate students, researchers in optimization and telecommunications engineering, and applied mathematicians.

Review Environmental Requirements for Electromechanical and Electrical Equipment / Newnes:

This is the definitive reference containing all of the background guidance, typical ranges, details of recommended test specifications, case studies and regulations covering the environmental requirements on designers and manufacturers of electrical and electromechanical equipment worldwide. The recent introduction of the European EMC directive is just one aspect of the requirements placed upon manufacturers and designers of electrical equipment. There are numerous national and international standards and specifications that describe the application environment in which equipment must function. Factors that must be taken into account include temperature, solar radiation, humidity, pressure, weather and the effects of water and salt, pollutants and contaminants, mechanical stresses and vibration, ergonomic considerations, electrical safety including EMC, reliability and performance. A broad range of standard tests exist which must be passed by equipment if it is to fulfil the requirements placed upon it. Ray Tricker is the author of a number of books describing the regulatory framework within which the electronics and electrical equipment industry must function, including Quality and Standards in Electronics, also published by Newnes. This latest volume will give the designer or manufacturer a first point of reference when negotiating the minefield that is the global market for their products. Companion to 'Quality and Standards in Electronics'Covers essential tests and regulations for equipment designers and manufacturersLikely to be of interest to major companies worldwide.

Review Development with Sustainable Use of Electricity (NATO Science Partnership Sub-Series: 3:) / Springer:

The rather young field of research into electricity savings is attracting increasing attention since low electricity consumption is a vital component of environmentally sustainable development. The potential benefits from using less electricity, without sacrificing quality of life, are immense, as the book shows with case studies from Eastern and Western Europe and the USA. Saving electricity means that the expense of constructing scores of power plants can be saved, and that their economic and environmental impact will vanish. Audience: Can be read with profit by any graduate. Suitable as a reference work for Master's and Doctoral students, as well as for others working on environmental issues in general and electricity savings in particular.

Review Lengthening the Day: A History of Lighting Technology / Oxford University Press, USA:

Throughout human history people have used light to lengthen their day. Modern life is now inconceivable without the light bulb, but up until the nineteenth century the only useful source of light was flame. This fascinating volume explains how light-from primitive torches to florescent lighting-has affected our daily lives. The book describes how oil lamps, candles, and gas lights work and outlines the principles of all the main types of electric lights now available. Thoroughly illustrated, Lengthening the Day provides a history of lighting, along with contemporary uses and technical details. Quotations from Aristophanes to Jane Austen, and from James Boswell to Kenneth Grahame, illustrate the social importance of lighting.

There exists today an increasing interest in the study of time delay systems because delayed systems are encountered frequently in practice and time delays are often a source of instability. The first workshop in this rapidly growing field of time delay systems was organized by the Laboratoire d'Automatique de Grenoble, France and sponsored by the IFAC Technical Committee on Linear Systems. The 50 participants had the possibility to attend 4 plenary sessions and 2 invited sessions as well as 30 contributed papers selected from 40 submitted papers coming from 17 countries. The technical papers, arranged in 11 sessions, covered the field of linear time delay systems, including algebraic and structural properties, stability analysis, stabilization, Hinf control, robust stabilization and some applications.

Review Modern Power Station Practice : Index / Pergamon Pr:

This volume contains two additional features which enhance the value of Modern Power Station Practice as a whole: a cumulative subject index and a detailed list of tables of contents for the entire work. The cumulative index provides access to the vast body of information presented in the set, and also indicates at a glance the breadth and depth of the treatment through the use of inclusive page ranges for major topics. In order to allow the reader the greatest flexibility in using the index there are many cross-references. The entries themselves are qualified by up to two descriptive subheadings to allow the most detailed coverage possible of the subject matter. The reproduction of the tables of contents for each volume also provides an overview of the organisation of the individual volumes.
