Review Adaptive Filtering and Change Detection / Wiley:

Adaptive filtering is a branch of digital signal processing which enables the selective enhancement of desired elements of a signal and the reduction of undesired elements. Change detection is another kind of adaptive filtering for non-stationary signals, and is the basic tool in fault detection and diagnosis. This text takes the unique approach that change detection is a natural extension of adaptive filtering, and the broad coverage encompasses both the mathematical tools needed for adaptive filtering and change detection and the applications of the technology. Real engineering applications covered include aircraft, automotive, communication systems, signal processing and automatic control problems. The unique integration of both theory and practical applications makes this book a valuable resource combining information otherwise only available in separate sources Comprehensive coverage includes many examples and case studies to illustrate the ideas and show what can be achieved Uniquely integrates applications to airborne, automotive and communications systems with the essential mathematical tools Accompanying Matlab toolbox available on the web illustrating the main ideas and enabling the reader to do simulations using all the figures and numerical examples featured This text would prove to be an essential reference for postgraduates and researchers studying digital signal processing as well as practising digital signal processing engineers.

Review Power from the Waves: Incorporating and expanding on Energy from the waves by the same author / Oxford University Press, USA:

Over the last decade or so, renewable energy technology has moved from the margins to the mainstream. Where it was once a utopian dream, British experts now talk of a huge market for the UK renewable energy industry, and the government's Renewable Energy Advisory Group estimates that renewable sources could contribute as much as 20% of the UK's electricity requirement by the year 2025. The UK first entered the renewable energy field in 1974, after the first oil crisis. Since then, a total of 230 million pounds has been spent on research and development projects. Wave power was one of the front runners; millions were spent on it before the "deep sea" wave program folded in 1982. The decision to abandon the program was the focus for many debates in which the author took a vigorous part. His book, Energy From the Waves, first published in 1979, provided unique coverage for the general reader, as well as for students of renewable energy. He has since followed the twists and turns of the debate over wave power, not exactly endearing himself to the energy establishment, but providing readers with many fascinating accounts of decision-making processes. This is a continuation of the study of power waves, and because the issues it touches upon are more urgent than ever, it should interest not only engineers and environmentalists, but the general public as well.

Review Guide to Improved Earthquake Performance of Electric Power Systems (Asce Manual and Reports on Engineering Practice) / American Society of Civil Engineers:

Recent moderate and strong California earthquakes demonstrate that parts of electric power systems are very vulnerable to damage. Most damage is due to the failure of porcelain elements in high-voltage substation equipment, although, performance is also strongly influenced by specific equipment designs and installation practices. Damage to various lifelines and structures has impaired the performance of some communication and control systems after earthquakes. This manual issues methods to improve the earthquake response of electric power systems. It deals with major power system elements - power generating stations, transmission and distribution lines, substations, system communications and control, and ancillary facilities and functions. A large portion of the document is devoted to high-voltage substations, as this is where most power system damage has been concentrated. The topics include: sources and effects of earthquakes; overview of earthquake performance of power systems and facilities; approach to improved earthquake performance; substations; transmission and distribution lines and support structures; power generating facilities; system control; communication systems; and ancillary facilities and functions.

Publication date: 2001-07-09
Dewey code: 621.43
List Price: $136.00
Price: $108.80

Review Electronic Control of Switched Reluctance Machines (Newnes Power Engineering Series) / Newnes:

Switched reluctance motors have steadily increased in commercial importance since their introduction in the early 1980's, while their technology - especially of their electronic control - has made great progress. Their unique characteristics introduce a delicate balance, in which the copper and iron are diminished in quantity, complexity and cost, in favour of a greater reliance on sophistication in the controller. Thus mastery of the control is the key challenge in the application of these machines. This book is intended for engineer's in industry and in the large research community in electrical machines and drives. It introduces the techniques for controlling switched reluctance machines, starting from first principles and building up to the most advanced forms of sensorless control. It covers the recent advances in electronic control and includes aspects of motion control, automation, acoustic noise reduction and energy efficiency. covers the recent changes in control technologyincludes up-to-date equipment and methodscontains applications and case studies.

Review Power Transmission and Distribution / Fairmont Pr:

Our ever-increasing dependence on electricity demands improvements in the quality of its supply. The deregulation of electric (and other) utilities, the events of 9/11, and the blackouts in North America, London, and the Italian peninsula evidence this need. This book looks at our current transmission systems and how loop circuits can substantially improve the reliability of transmission lines, essentially to provide a two-way feed to the consumer and insuring continuity of service if a fault develops on the circuit. It also covers distribution systems and includes information on how small generating units can be connected directly to the distribution system in the same manner as in larger cogenerating units.

Dewey code: 333.7932

Review Renewable Resources for Electric Power: Prospects and Challenges / Quorum Books:

The liberalization of U. S. and European electric power markets presents a critical challenge for renewable sources of energy. Edinger and Kaul survey the technological state-of-the-art and economic aspects of renewable electricity generation, and outline the role of other renewable sources, such as solar, wind, and micro-hydroelectric technologies. Offering an empirical and theoretical assessment of these technologies and their assets and liabilities, the book shows how it is possible to restructure our electric power systems and reorient them toward sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives. International climate conferences such as those in Rio de Janeiro and Kyoto have proclaimed the need for environmentally hospitable technologies. A new electricity system, based on renewable resources and small-scale power technologies, is needed badly; their economics and other efficiencies over conventional central power generation with fossil fuels is clear. Edinger and Kaul assess the rewards and risks associated with renewable technologies and outline a feasible path toward a more environmentally friendly, and reasonable, use of limited natural resources and the global ecosystem. One promising approach for industrialized countries is the decentralization of our current public grid systems. This offers an opportunity for developing countries to leapfrog the stage of fossil fuel, held responsible now for environmental pollution, resource depletion and possibly global climate change. [+]
The authors present theoretical analyses and empirical evidence to buttress their contentions, mainly, that electric power systems founded on renewable resources are vital prerequisites if we are to achieve the United Nations' target of globally sustained development.

Review Feedback Networks: Theory and Circuit Applications / World Scientific Publishing Company:

This book addresses the theoretical and practical circuit and system concepts that underpin the design of reliable and reproducible, high performance, monolithic feedback circuits. It is intended for practicing electronics engineers and students who wish to acquire an insightful understanding of the ways in which open loop topologies, closed loop architectures, and fundamental circuit theoretic issues combine to determine the limits of performance of analog networks. Since many of the problems that underpin high speed digital circuit design are a subset of the analysis and design dilemmas confronted by wideband analog circuit designers, the book is also germane to high performance digital circuit design.
