Review The Beatles Antologia / Ediciones B:

Chock full of conversations and interviews with each of the band members, conducted both then and now, this is the definitive biography of The Beatles as told by its own members. Contemporary interviews with Paul, George, and Ringo given for the purpose of this book are spliced together with words from the late John that have been gathered from print, broadcast, and manuscripts—each with an indicated date—to create coherent pages and subject treatments, as though the four had been brought back together for a final, retrospective conversation.  Opening with the band members' separate accounts of their childhoods, the anthology then moves into a year-by-year organization that allows for great detail and many digressions—how The Beatles initially came together; their rough early concerts; the phenomenon of their rapid rise to fame; the musical and social changes that they both propelled and reflected; and frank conversations about the most enigmatic part of their history, the band's dissolution. .

Review Researching Visual Arts Education in Museums and Galleries: An International Reader (Landscapes: the Arts, Aesthetics, and Education) / Springer:

A dramatic increase in interest, world wide, in the educational role of galleries and museums has occurred in the past decade. This results in part from a rekindling of the debate about their purpose and effectiveness - whether as public institutions founded with educational intentions, or as private foundations with an educational interest. While diverse informal learning opportunities and more structured education programmes have multiplied as a consequence, and networks have been established for sharing ideas, the need for a more substantial and sustained approach to research-informed practice has become evident. Since the educational issues involved cut across national and cultural boundaries, there is an opportunity for education providers, and for those who organise their training programmes, to record and to build upon the most enlightened practice. To achieve that there is a need for an international research resource. Researching Visual Arts Education in Museums and Galleries brings together case studies from Europe, Asia and North America, in a way that will lay a foundation for international co-operation in the future development and communication of practice-based research. The research in each of the cases directly stems from educational practice in very particular contexts, indicating at once the variety and detail of practitioners' concerns and their common interests.

Review How We Got Here: The 70's, The Decade That Brought You Modern Life For Better Or Worse / Diane Pub Co:

For many, the 1970s evoke the Brady Bunch and the birth of disco. In this first, thematic popular history of the decade, David Frum argues that it was the 1970s, not the 1960s, that created modern America and altered the American personality forever. A society that had valued faith, self-reliance, self-sacrifice, and family loyalty evolved in little more than a decade into one characterized by superstition, self-interest, narcissism, and guilt. Frum examines this metamorphosis through the rise to cultural dominance of faddish psychology, astrology, drugs, religious cults, and consumer debt, and profiles such prominent players of the decade as Werner Erhard, Alex Comfort, and Jerry Brown. How We Got Here is lively and provocative reading. In a relentlessly smart book full of colorful anecdotes and deft pop-culture references, author David Frum describes the social convulsions of the 1970s: "We live in a world made new, and made new not by new machines, but by new feelings, new thoughts, new manners, new ways. " The 1960s have a reputation as America's turning-point decade, but Frum convincingly argues that the 10 years following mattered more. The 1970s, he writes, "left behind a country that was more dynamic, more competitive, more tolerant; less deferential, less self-confident, less united; more socially equal, less economically equal; more expressive, more risk-averse, more sexual; less literate, less polite, less reticent. " The precise dates of this transformation are not as important as the reasons behind it, however, and the explanation in How We Got Here for what happened is both original and compelling. He says America's midcentury confidence was an anomaly. [+]
At some point, "the rebellion of an unmilitary people against institutions and laws formed by a century of war and the preparation for war" was inevitable. Rather than pondering why Americans trust their public institutions today less than they did during the Watergate revelations, for instance, Frum turns the question on its head: Why was the trust so high previous to that experience? His narrative describing the dizzy whirl of progress is absorbing, and his warning against both the nostalgic myths of the past and the uncritical acceptance of recent change is wise. How We Got Here also has a perfect title: there may not be a better book available on the broad currents of American social life in the second half of the 20th century. -John J. Miller.

Review Female Impersonation / Routledge:

Female Impersonation is a feminist and psychoanalytic investigation of the contemporary fascination with impersonation. Evident everywhere from television talk shows to cultural theory, masquerade and "passing" are now at the center of both popular and scholarly explorations of dominant gender, sexual, race and class identities and cultural values. When-and for whom-is a performance of an identity a masquerade, rather than the real thing? Why do people try to pass as what they are not? Is there a difference between masquerade and passing if both make identity an unnatural act? Carole-Anne Tyler considers these questions raised by female impersonations in a wide range of contemporary media and texts, from Dolly Parton and Renee Richards to Luce Irigaray and Jacques Derrida. Female Impersonation will be of interest to readers concerned with the complex politics at stake in every discussion-and performance-of identity.

Review Rethinking Global Security: Media, Popular Culture, And the "War on Terror" / Rutgers University Press:

Analysts today routinely look toward the media and popular culture as a way of understanding global security. Although only a decade ago, such a focus would have seemed out of place, the proliferation of digital technologies in the twenty-first century has transformed our knowledge of near and distant events so that it has become impossible to separate the politics of war, suffering, terrorism, and security from the practices and processes of the media. In "Rethinking Global Security", Andrew Martin and Patrice Petro bring together ten path-breaking essays that explore the ways that our notions of fear, insecurity, and danger are fostered by intermediary sources such as television, radio, film, satellite imaging, and the Internet. The contributors, who represent a wide variety of disciplines, including communications, art history, media studies, women's studies, and literature, show how both fictional and fact-based threats to global security have helped to create and sustain a culture that is deeply distrustful - of images, stories, reports, and policy decisions. Topics range from the "Patriot Act", to the censorship of media personalities such as Howard Stern, to the role that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and other television programming play as an interpretative frame for current events. Designed to promote strategic thinking about the relationships between media, popular culture, and global security, this book is essential reading for scholars of international relations, technology, and media studies.

Review Girard- Perregeaux / Flammarion:

Wristwatches are the ultimate collector's item and this handsome volume chronicles the history of a Swiss watch manufactory that is an industry standard setter. Arriving at the crossroads of design and technology, Girard-Perregaux has created timepieces of superior quality and timeless elegance since 1791. The company designed the first wristwatch to replace the pocketwatch, set the quartz standard, built the timepieces used to record the first Zepplin flights and Formula I car races, and designed a watch exclusively for Ferrari owners. Few watchmakers can boast as fine a collection as Girard-Perregaux, which features luxurious "complications" such as the tourbillon mechanism covered by three gold bridges. In its unceasing quest for innovation and improvement, Girard-Perregaux has raised the mechanical movement of their watches to a degree of perfection. Such amazing design intricacies unfold in this book through a series of close-up photographs with vellum overlays that show the inner workings of the watches.
