Review Reinventing Traditional Alaska Native Performance (Studies in Theatre Arts, V. 17) / Edwin Mellen Press:

Dr. Riccio's work vividly demonstrates the capacity of the human being, whomever they are, to cross over the gap that unfortunately exists between people. Dr. Riccio through the mechanism of theatre, has cleverly built a bridge between differing worldviews, and has done it well. This kind of bridging is magical and sometimes mystical, which is appropriate for Alaska native cultures and the art of performance.

Review Song and Sketch Transcripts of British Music Hall Performers Elsie and Doris Waters (Studies in Music Hall Song and Dance, 1) / Edwin Mellen Press:

This is the first book, scholarly or popular, on Elsie and Doris Waters, the most successful female double-act in the history of British music hall and variety. They distinguished themselves in the male-dominated field and in the movement of female artists who, after WWI, elected not to marry, the better to pursue their careers. Elsie and Doris Waters wrote almost all their own comic songs and sketches, created an original gynocentric comedy, anticipating feminist movements, controlled their means of production in the male-dominated British stage, radio and recording industries, and performed together in Britain and around the Commonwealth for half a century. This study shows them to be precursors of contemporary female double-acts and patter-based comedians and ensembles such as French and Saunders, Flanders and Swann, Beyond the Fringe, and Monty Python's Flying Circus. The study also contains 50 transcribed songs and sketches, their original compositions and arrangements, from recordings on 78 rpm gramophone records made between 1929 and 1944. The words to their entire oeuvre of songs and sketches have never before been available in print.

Review Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in Performance: Traditions and Departures / Mellen University Press:

"Romeo and Juilet" has enjoyed great popularity on the stage from Shakespeare's time onward, but is not a faverouite with literary critics who view it as an immature study for the greater tragedies that would follow. This study seeks to show that acting, directing and stage design are acts of interpretation to be judged alongside the readings of literary scholars. It is a study of selected actors in the play's three main roles. The Romeos treated at length are those of Richard Burbage, David Garrick, Johnston Forbes-Robertson and Laurence Olivier. Juliet is examined on the basis of the interpretations by the boy-actor of Shakespeare's day, George-Anne Bellamy, Susannah Cibber, Adelaide Neilson and Peggy Ashcroft. Finally, Mercutio is studies through the interpretations by Henry Woodward, Charles Kemble, John Gieldgud, Leo Ciceri and others.

Review Men in Women's Clothing: Anti-theatricality and Effeminization, 1579-1642 (Cambridge Studies in Renaissance Literature and Culture) / Cambridge University Press:

In 1579 a leading dramatic critic made the curious remark that theatre 'effeminated' the mind. Four years later another insisted that male actors who wore women's clothing could literally 'adulterate' male gender. In a tract which may have hastened the closing of the theatres in the mid-seventeenth century, William Prynne described a warrior whom women's clothing had caused to 'degenerate' into a woman. How can we account for these persistent anxieties and their effect on the work of Renaissance playwrights, simultaneously haunted by such fears and obsessively intent on coming to terms with them?.

Review Cinema and National Identity in a Divided Germany 1979-1989: The Split Screen (Studies in History and Criticism of Film, 2) / Edwin Mellen Press:

This study provides a comparative analysis of the political, economic and ideological determinants shaping East and West German feature films during the so-called established phase of the two states between 1979 and 1989. The author provides a theoretical framework for comparing the two film cultures on an abstract ideological level, and analyzes the extent to which the poitical systems of the FRG and GDR shaped production, distribution and exhibition in order to establish a particular type of film culture. He also investigates in greater detail how political, economic and cultural debates surrounding the question of an East and West German identity were translated into filmic discourse.

Review Lillian Russell: A Bio-Bibliography (Bio-Bibliographies in the Performing Arts) / Greenwood Press:

Lillian Russell was the Victorian era's symbol of talent, charm, and beauty. She was introduced by impresario Tony Pastor in 1880, and was considered an emblem of feminine beauty until the turn of the century. Although her voice still set a standard of excellence, by that time America's vision of loveliness had changed, and her middle-aged body could not meet the new challenge on the musical stage. Russell responded with extraordinary resilience. She adapted with the times and became the grande dame of the American theatre in non-musical plays, burlesque, variety, and the lecture circuit. She wrote widely-read newspaper columns in which she pioneered an optimistic philosophy of self-help, and she used her numerous connections to champion the causes that she held dear. Carefully researched, this reference book is a comprehensive and thoroughly documented guide to Lillian Russell's life and career. A biography places her in the social and cultural context of her time and adds previously ignored information about her parents, birth, coming-of-age in the Midwest, early career, daughter, and death. A chronology then gives a detailed listing of events in her life and career. The chapters that follow are devoted to her many performances. [+]
Entries in each section provide cast and credit information, plot synopses, review excerpts, and critical commentary. Several appendices offer additional information about her work, and an extensive annotated bibliography lists sources of additional information.

Review Bronson Howard, Dean of American Dramatists (Studies in Theatre Arts, V. 13) / Edwin Mellen Press:

Between 1842 and 1908, Bronson Howard wrote 27 plays which appeared under 39 different titles, and had opening nights in New York, London and Berlin. This study is both a historical biography and critical analysis of the literature, concluding with an attempt to place his work in critical perspective both in terms of his own era, and ours. In addition to his best-known play, the often-anthologized civil war spectacle "Shenandoah", it examines his other works such as "Saratoga", "Young Mrs Winthrop", "One of Our Girls" and "The Henrietta".
