Review Shakespeare and Sir Thomas More: Essays on the Play and its Shakespearian Interest (New Cambridge Shakespeare Studies and Supplementary Texts) / Cambridge University Press:

Scholarly interest in The Book of Sir Thomas More has concentrated on the issue of Shakespeare's contribution to its revision. The play, which concerns the life of Sir Thomas More, was written in 1593-4, subjected to censorship by the Master of the Revels and revised by a group of playwrights which probably included Shakespeare. 148 lines have been claimed as Shakespeare's, and these were the focus of a collection of essays edited by A. W. Pollard in 1923. The range of topics in this volume is much wider than that of the 1923 collection, taking in the problems presented by the play as a whole, its authorship and revision, structure, occasion and staging. The terms of controversy are realigned, and the stature of the play re-established, making it appear more than ever likely that Shakespeare contributed to its revision.

Review The Theatres of Inigo Jones and John Webb / Cambridge University Press:

As surveyor of the King's Works, Inigo Jones was responsible for the visual aspects of the masques performed at the various royal palaces, and both he and his pupil John Webb designed a number of regular theatres at Court. This book gathers together all of the drawings for playhouses which they prepared for the drama proper, excluding the more specialised designs for the Court masque. The designs are close to the mainstream of theatre development in the seventeenth century, ranging from the Cockpit in Drury Lane, 1616, to the Hall Theatre at Whitehall half a century later. Some of the designs are newly identified; others are reinterpreted, and many individual drawings are reassigned. As a result Jones and Webb are established as clearly the most effective London theatre builders of the seventeenth century, at least as influential in the architecture of playhouses and stages as they were in the more painterly traditions of scene design.

Review Keep Watching the Skies: American Science Fiction Movies of the Fifties / McFarland & Company:

Relive and thrill to the science fiction movies of the ‘50s (through 1962), when jujubes and popcorn with extra butter went arm and arm with mad women (Attack of the 50 Foot Woman), weird teenagers (I Was a Teenage Frankenstein, Teenage Zombies), ill-fated matches (I Married a Monster from Outer Space), victims of scientific experiments (The Fly), and all those things that kept dropping in from outer space (The Blob, The Brain Eaters). As Warren meticulously and unfailingly points out, special effects were infantile (“They fall into a huge spider web which strongly resembles a cargo net,” Earth vs. The Spider), budgets incredibly small (“As Jack Moffitt noted, ‘the giant spaceman must be a fugitive from medieval France since, on his chest, he wears a shield bearing the fleur-de-lis. On his back, is an Assyrian bull, indicating he may have had his cleaning, pressing and mending done in Babylon’,” Attack of the 50 Foot Woman). From The Astounding She-Monster, another small budget reminder: “In the first day of filming, the She-Monster bent over to kill one of the characters and ripped (her) suit in the back. so in all subsequent scenes, the She-Monster makes exits and entrances facing the camera. Of course, this means she is walking backward much of the time, but aliens are weird. ” The book is filled with witty, fanatically in-depth critiques, with insider anecdotes. [+]
In addition to detailed plot synopses and production data, Warren cites good and bad reviews from the period, then adds his own analysis of how the film stands up after two or three decades. Credits add to and correct other published sources. Fantastic photographs, drawings, appendices and index are included.

Review From Text to Performance in the Elizabethan Theatre: Preparing the Play for the Stage / Cambridge University Press:

David Bradley sets out to discover how Elizabethan theatre companies prepared plays for performance: how playwrights understood the composition of the actor-companies they wrote for, how actors followed their directions for entrances and exits, and what happened when plays were adapted for changes in personnel or for other companies. Bradley's evidence includes seven theatre plots and seventeen manuscript plays, some from theatre productions which took place at the Shakespearean playhouse the Rose Theatre. Bradley's conclusions can be extrapolated to expand our understanding of other companies and their repertoires in Elizabethan theatre. The book contains facsimiles of printed plots from the period, an appendix listing playwrights, plays, theatre companies, and the number of actors needed for performance, as well as an extensive bibliography.
