Review Blackout: World War II and the Origins of Film Noir / The Johns Hopkins University Press:Challenging conventional scholarship placing the origins of film noir in postwar Hollywood, Sheri Chinen Biesen finds the genre's roots firmly planted in the political, social, and material conditions of Hollywood during the war. After Pearl Harbor, America and Hollywood experienced a sharp cultural transformation that made horror, shock, and violence not only palatable but preferable. Hard times necessitated cheaper sets, fewer lights, and fresh talent; censors as well as the movie-going public showed a new tolerance for sex and violence; and female producers experienced newfound prominence in the industry. Biesen brings prodigious archival research, accessible prose, and imaginative insights to both well-known films noir of the wartime period - The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, and Double Indemnity - and others often overlooked or underrated - Scarlet Street, Ministry of Fear, Phantom Lady, and Stranger on the Third Floor.

Review Worldly Stage: Theatricality in Seventeenth-Century China (Harvard East Asian Monographs) / Harvard University Asia Center:In seventeenth-century China, as formerly disparate social spheres grew closer, the theater began to occupy an important ideological niche among traditional cultural elites. As the newly rich and the newly educated challenged the position of older elites, notions of performance and spectatorship came to animate diverse aspects of literati cultural production. The goal of Worldly Stage is to show how the theater acquired this figurative power. Conceptions of theatrical spectatorship, Sophie Volpp argues, helped shape a discourse on social spectatorship that suggested how a discerning person might evaluate the performance of status. The exploration of theatricality allowed authors to discuss the emerging middle elite's precarious grasp of symbolic capital and the cultural past. That social roles resembled theatrical roles illuminated the excesses of the socially aspiring and the success of the undeserving. The transience of the world and the vanity of reputation had long informed the Chinese conception of theatricality. But in the seventeenth century, these notions acquired a new verbalization. That theatrical spectatorship provided a model for how one viewed the world was an old idea. What was new was that theatrical models of spectatorship were now applied to the contemporary urban social spectacle in which the theater itself was deeply implicated.

Review The Oxford Encyclopedia of Theatre and Performance: Two volumes / Oxford University Press, USA:From ancient Greek theatre to the latest developments in stage design, from the trance-dances of Sumatra to an extensive biography of the legendary actor-manager Eleonore Duse, the Encyclopedia provides unrivaled information across the broad sweep of theatrical activity. The Encyclopedia's inclusive approach encompasses opera and film, dance and radio, and para-theatrical, non-dramatic performances including circuses and carnivals, and parades and public executions-providing truly extensive coverage from ancient Greek theatre to the latest developments in London, Paris, New York, and around the globe. The Encyclopedia pays special attention to non-Western styles through articles on theatre and performance throughout the many countries and traditions of Asia and Africa. Numerous biographical entries cover the lives and work of major figures: actors, playwrights, directors, designer, company managers, and critics. A unique feature of the Encyclopedia is the series of articles on concepts, theories, and critical approaches, ranging from short definitions of terms like catharsis and monologue to more lengthy considerations of farce and tragedy. Race and theatre, the nature of acting, censorship, safety, special effects, and media and performance are all debated. In all, the 4,300 entries by renowned contributors remain accessible in language and approach and take advantage of the theoretical and historiographical developments in the field. The combination of rich detail and accessible language and style make The Oxford Encyclopedia of Theatre and Performance the resource of choice for readers interested in theatre and performance, from occasional playgoers to newspaper critics, students, and scholars.

Review Erotic Politics : The Dynamics of Desire on the English Renaissance Stage / Routledge:Taking eroticism on the English renaissance stage as a paradigm for issues of sexuality and identity, the essays in Erotic Politics examine the nature of sexual definition and desire in early modern culture. Recent studies of Renaissance sexuality have focused on the subversive potential of gender reversal, yet this collection widens the arena of debate to study the structure and cultural definition of erotic desire. The authors view the Renaissance stage as a decoder for erotic experience which is used to both reinforce and subvert expected sexual behaviour. Any examination of Renaissance eroticism must acknowledge the profound shift in sexual sensibility which took place after the seventeenth century, a shift which introduced concepts of sexual dimorphism and constructed the category of "homosexuality. " Erotic Politics views the theatrical convention of cross-dressing as part of a dynamic which served to deconstruct gender itself, leaving conventional categories of sexuality blurred, confused, or absent. It also addresses a crucial theoretical problem in postmodern criticism: how can a subjective phenomena, such as Renaissance erotic experience, be placed in its historical, public context? And can this experience be examined without recourse to psychoanalytic theory? In seeking to reposition the conventions and subversions of gender and desire, this collection opens up a new and distinctive perspective in the cultural debate. Review A Feminist Companion to Shakespeare (Blackwell Companions to Literature and Culture) / Blackwell Publishers:The question is not whether Shakespeare studies needs feminism, but whether feminism needs Shakespeare. The all-women team of contributors to A Feminist Companion to Shakespeare argues that not only is Shakespeare important for women, his works are specifically important for feminism. The collected essays address issues vital to feminist inquiry such as race, sexuality, the body, queer politics, and the advent of capitalism, but also appropriate ground that has been hitherto regarded as terrain hostile to feminism, such as textual editing and theatre history. Contributors include both influential voices in the field and new feminist scholars offering fresh and exciting insights. Each contributor is committed to providing beginning students (both female and male) with an accessible foundation for study, while negotiating for the more advanced reader the urgent issues of the field. A Feminist Companion to Shakespeare is the first feminist statement on Shakespeare for the 21st century.
