Review The Off Broadway Musical, 1910-2007: Cast, Credits, Songs, Critical Reception and Performance Data of 1,800 Shows / McFarland:Despite an often unfair reputation as being less popular, less successful, or less refined than their bona-fide Broadway counterparts, Off Broadway musicals deserve their share of critical acclaim and study. A number of shows originally staged Off Broadway have gone on to their own successful Broadway runs, from the ever-popular A Chorus Line and Rent to more off-beat productions like Avenue Q and Little Shop of Horrors. And while it remains to be seen if other popular Off Broadway shows like Stomp, Blue Man Group, and Altar Boyz will make it to the larger Broadway theaters, their Off Broadway runs have been enormously successful in their own right. This book discusses over 1,800 Off Broadway, Off Off Broadway, showcase, and workshop musical productions. It includes detailed descriptions of Off Broadway musicals that closed in previews or in rehearsal, selected musicals that opened in Brooklyn and in New Jersey, and American operas that opened in New York, along with general overviews of Off Broadway institutions such as the Light Opera of Manhattan. The typical entry includes the name of the host theater or theaters; the opening date and number of performances; the production's cast and creative team; a list of songs; a brief plot synopsis; and general comments and reviews from the New York critics. Besides the individual entries, the book also includes a preface, a bibliography, and 21 appendices including a discography, filmography, a list of published scripts, and lists of musicals categorized by topic and composer.

Review Memoirs of a Professional Cad / Scarecrow Pr:The lingering image of George Sanders, kept alive by his appearances in dozens of famous films, is that of the cultured cad. Sanders won an Oscar for his performance as the acerbic, haughty drama critic in "All About Eve" and gave good accounts of himself as a cad in "Rebecca" and "The Moon and Sixpence", but mostly he ambled through more than a hundred films with a strangely appealing insouciance that fascinated even those with whom he worked. Perhaps it was the way he spoke-like a well-tuned cello voicing aphorisms. He was a witty man, and his autobiography, "The Memoirs of a Professional Cad", published in 1960, is one of the most amusing and literate books ever written by an actor. Veteran broadcaster and film historian Tony Thomas has filled in the rest of the George Sanders story by supplying an introduction, a lengthy epilogue, and a filmography of Sanders's 110 films.

Review Theatre and Empire: Great Britain on the London Stages under James VI and I (Politics, Culture and Society in Early Modern Britain) / Manchester University Press:This book looks at the genesis of the British national identity in the reign of King James I and VI. While devolution is currently decentralizing Britain, this book examines how the idea of a united kingdom was created in the first place. It does this by studying both the political language of the King’s project to replace England, Scotland, and Wales with a single kingdom of Great Britain and the cultural representations of empire on the public and private stages.

Review Serpent of the Nile / Saqi Books:Newly updated and lavishly illustrated, this classic celebration of female dancers of the Arab world is available in an appealing new format. "Serpent of the Nile" traces the origins of this ancient art, which survived in the face of commercialism, religious disapproval and changing times. Wendy Buonaventura demonstrates how Arabic dance came to be influenced by Western ideas about art and entertainment. But the influence was two-way. In the heyday of Orientalism, Arabic dance captured the imagination of writers and artists such as Flaubert, David Roberts and Jean-Leon Gerome, and imitators Colette and Mata Hari. Often based on common fantasies about Middle-Eastern women, this obsession produced evocative images and inspired fashion, theatre and popular entertainment.

Review Broadway Plays And Musicals: Descriptions and Essential Facts of More Than 14,000 Shows Through 2007 / McFarland:New York City's Broadway district is by far the most prestigious and lucrative venue for American performers, playwrights, entertainers, and technicians. While there are many reference works and critical studies of selected Broadway plays or musicals and even more works about the highlights of the American theater, this is the first single-volume book to cover all of the activities on Broadway between 1919 and 2007. More than 14,000 productions are briefly described, including hundreds of plays, musicals, revivals, and specialty programs that have been performed on the Great White Way. Entries include famous and forgotten works, designed to give a complete picture of Broadway's history and development, its evolution since the early twentieth century, and its rise to unparalleled prominence in the world of American theater. More than just raw data, the productions are identified in terms of plot, cast, personnel, critical reaction, and significance in the history of New York theater and culture. In addition to a chronological list of all Broadway productions between 1919 and 2007, the book also includes approximately 600 important productions performed on Broadway before 1919.
