Review Oxford University Press, USA / French Cinema in the 1990s: Continuity and Difference Creator: Phil Powrie

List Price: $80.00
Price: $323.57

Review French Cinema in the 1990s: Continuity and Difference / Oxford University Press, USA:

Following on from Phil Powrie's French Cinema in the 1980s: Nostalgia and the Crisis of Masculinity (Clarendon Press, 1997), this collection of essays, which brings together scholars in the UK and the USA, is the first on French films in the 1990s. The collection focuses on continuity with the 1980s in terms of genres and preoccupations, such as definitions of a national cinema, the heritage film, gay/lesbian issues, and ethnic issues. But it also focuses on key differences: new types of heritage film, whether postcolonial or heritage pastiche; the newly-emerging genre of cinema de banlieue; and the focus on community and political reflection. Films examined in detail are Les Amants du Pont-Neuf, Le Bonheur est dans le pre, Bye Bye, Chacun cherche son chat, Le Cinquieme element, Douce France, Etat des lieux, Gazon maudit, Germinal, La Haine, Indochine, Irma Vep, Jai pas sommeil, Krim, Merci la vie, Metisse, Mon Pere ce heros, Les Nuits fauves, RaI, Ridicule, Romuald et Juliette, Les Roseaux sauvages, Trois Couleurs: Blanc, Trois Couleurs: Bleu, Trois Couleurs: Rouge, Un heros tres discret, Les Visiteurs. This collection of closely-argued essays will help students and film lovers alike to understand where French cinema has been going in the 1990s.

Review University of Michigan Press / Gendering Bodies/Performing Art: Dance and Literature in Early Twentieth-Century British Culture Publication date: 1995-10-01
Dewey code: 820.9355
Price: $50.00

Review Gendering Bodies/Performing Art: Dance and Literature in Early Twentieth-Century British Culture / University of Michigan Press:

Gendering Bodies / Performing Art is the first book that attempts a conceptual integration of dance and literary history in British culture. It attempts to make visible the role of dance in creating, reinforcing, and challenging developments in aesthetic practice and ideology in which both dance and literature participated. Koritz integrates chapters on dance and dancers- from music hall ballet girls of the 1890s to the prestigious season of Diaghilev's Russian Ballet- with discussions on how major literary figures such as Oscar Wilde, W. B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, and T. S. Eliot used dance to further their own aesthetic agendas. In doing so, she provides an illuminating analysis of the connections between literature and dance, and explores the ways in which these two arts actively engaged in cultural processes encompassing both. ". [+]
provocative and stimulating. an invaluable addition to the work that is already available on turn-of-century theater/culture. "-Vivien Gardner, Manchester University "Reaching between the poles of popular music hall and the Ballet Russe, Koritz addresses a series of interrelated, mutually informing discourses in which we overhear the language of the literary community in its accolades and in its outcries. Koritz's book will prove useful to a wide variety of readers; many scholars of English literature will undoubtedly use this book to the fullest, turning to it again and again as a contextual primer for performance issues in their field. "-Cheryl Herr, University of IowaAmy Koritz is Co-Director of the Cultural Studies Program and Assistant Professor of English, Tulane University.

Review Fairleigh Dickinson University Press / Shakespeare and the History of Soliloquies Publication date: 2003-10
Dewey code: 809.245
Price: $75.00

Review Shakespeare and the History of Soliloquies / Fairleigh Dickinson University Press:

Provides the first systematic and comprehensive account of the conventions governing soliloquies in Western drama from ancient times to the twentieth century. Over the course of theatrical history, there have been several kinds of soliloquies. Shakespeare's soliloquies are not only the most interesting and the most famous, but also the most misunderstood, and several chapters examine them in detail. The present study is based on a painstaking analysis of the actual practices of dramatists from each age of theatrical history. This investigation has uncovered evidence that refutes long-standing commonplaces about soliloquies in general, about Shakespeare's soliloquies in particular, and especially about the "to be, or not to be" episode. 'Shakespeare and the history of Soliloquies' casts new lights on historical changes in the artistic representation of human beings and, because representations cannot be entirely disentangled from perception, on historical changes in the ways human beings have perceived theselves.

Review Palgrave Macmillan / Melodrama: The Cultural Emergence of a Genre Creator: Anastasia Nikolopoulou
Publication date: 1996-10-15
Dewey code: 809.252
Price: $79.95

Review Melodrama: The Cultural Emergence of a Genre / Palgrave Macmillan:

Using the term "melodrama" as an abstract category to describe almost any literary mode-from nineteenth-century novels to 20th-century films-modern critics have obscured the genre's historical and cultural functions as well as the nature of its specific appeal to working-class audiences. To rectify this situation, the essays in this innovative and international collection redirect attention to the historical, social, and cultural milieu in which melodrama emerged.

Review Routledge / John Osborne: Vituperative Artist (Studies in Modern Drama) Edition: 1
Publication date: 2001-12-21
Dewey code: 822.914
Price: $105.00

Review John Osborne: Vituperative Artist (Studies in Modern Drama) / Routledge:

John Osborne, who died in 1994, will be remembered as a playwright who liberated modern British drama from genteel explorations of upper-middle class life. He opened doors to English social and political realities that few authors since Shaw have presented on stage. Each essay chapter in the volume deals in depth with an important Osborne play. Gilleman's book analyses Osborne's reception and proposes an argument about his aesthetics. This book is sectioned so as to evoke the divisions of a "well made play" suggesting that "Osborne, the playwright" is perhaps his own best creation. The text includes the quick and perturbing rise to success, the masterworks, the slow descent with a number of relative failures, and the apt resolution with a play that returned to the opening scene of Osborne's career.
