Review Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing / Rebound by Sagebrush:

Two is a crowd when Peter and his four-year-old brother, Fudge, are in the same room. Grown-ups think Fudge is absolutely adorable, but Peter and his pet turtle, Dribble, know the truth. Fudge is actually a tiny terror in disguise, causing mischief everywhere he goes. Passed on from babysitters to their young charges, from big sisters to little brothers, and from parents to children, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and its cousins (Superfudge, Fudge-a-mania, and Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great) have entertained children since they first appeared in the early 1970s. The books follow Peter Hatcher, his little brother Fudgie, baby sister Tootsie, their neighbor Sheila Tubman, various pets, and minor characters through New York City and on treks to suburbs and camps. Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing is the first of these entertaining yarns. Peter, because he's the oldest, must deal with Fudgie's disgusting cuteness, his constant meddling with Peter's stuff, and other grave offenses, one of which is almost too much to bear. All these incidents are presented with the unfailing ear and big-hearted humor of the masterful Judy Blume. Though some of her books for older kids have aroused controversy, the Hatcher brothers and their adventures remain above the fray, where they belong. (Peter's in fourth grade, so the book is suitable for kids ages 8 and older. [+]

Review The Christmas Alphabet / Orchard Books (NY):

Celebrate Christmas with this beautiful pop-up alphabet book by award-winning author Robert Sabuda. "The Christmas book of the year. Twenty-six dazzling, magical pop-ups commemorate holiday sights and symbols in unforgettable ways. Most of the pop-ups themselves are white, which gives them an elegant look, and Sabuda. has designed them all to move gracefully when the flaps are opened. [+]
Besides being an imaginative paper designer, Sabuda uses form, color, and space expertly. Just terrific. " - Pointer, KIRKUS REVIEW Who can resist opening a door or lifting a flap just to see what's inside? No one. And that's why this seasonal, alphabetical pop-up book has become such a Christmas favorite. Beneath each lettered flap is an intricate three-dimensional paper cutout of a holiday-related object that starts with the same letter (A for angel, B for bell, C for candle). The cutouts, emerging from colorful squares, are all made of crisp white paper-creating an origami elegance. Yet the paper sculptures are decidedly joyful and unpredictable, like the exploding shreds of paper beside the title "unwrap" under the letter U. Robert Sabuda made his first pop-up book when he was 8 years old, but abandoned the art when he failed to figure out how to make the cyclone twirl in The Wizard of Oz. Apparently, he's finally mastered the art of motion, since many of the pop-ups feature movements such as flight for the angel, and the tender joining of lips for the kiss of two reindeer. Sabuda has also mastered the art of whimsy, making The Christmas Alphabet, The 12 Days of Christmas, and Cookie Count seasonal staples in households of children young and old. (All ages) -Gail Hudson.

Review U.S. Immigration and Migration Reference Library Edition 1. / U·X·L:

The Human Genome Diversity Project tells us that between 15,000 and 30,000 years ago people from Mongolia crossed Beringia to what we now call the Americas. U. S. Immigration and Migration chronicles and interprets the phenomenal waves of immigration to the United States from the earliest times through the period from 1820 to 1930, when the United States was the destination of some 60% of the world's immigrants - up to the present day, when restrictive policies have temporarily stanched the flow of immigrants. Features include 300 black-and-white illustrations, including about 10 maps; chronology; sidebars; words to know; research and activity ideas; further reading; and a subject index. The Almanac volumes tell of the economic, religious and political forces that compelled people to seek a better life in a new land. These same forces later inspired the migration of many Americans to other areas in mass movements such as the Westward Expansion; the rural to urban migration; the Great Migration of blacks in the early part of the 20th century; and the migration to the Sunbelt starting in the 1960s. The Biographies volumes bring the panorama of immigration and migration to a personal level by profiling both prominent and less well-known people of the immigrant experience. Insights into the movement of people are provided in the Primary Sources volume via excerpts from such key documents as the Maryland Toleration Act (1649), the Treaty of Fort Stanwix (1784), the Homestead Act (1862), the Chinese Exclusion Act (1882), and the Immigration Act (1924), as well as personal observations from two Mexican immigrants and concerns about the rise in U. S. [+]
immigration from conservative talk-show host Patrick J. Buchanan. For table of contents, sample pages or other volume specific information see the entry for the Almanac, Biographies or Primary Sources. (20050201).
