Review Churchill: A Concise Bibliography / Greenwood Press:At the close of the 20th C. , the formal end of a period strongly influenced by Winston S. Churchill as well as other political giants such as Stalin, Hitler, Mao Tse-Tung, and FDR, scholars continued to discuss and evaluate Churchill and will continue to do so into the 21st C. Many claim he was a Renaissance man who blended an unusual genius for action, writing, art, politics, and statesmanship, while others would excoriate him for his weaknesses. Aimed at a general audience of academics and armchair historians, this bibliography briefly describes and evaluates a wide selection of books in English by and about Winston S. Churchill. It includes books published since the late 1890s and is limited to works that are readily available. It excludes such items as theses and dissertations, government documents, manuscripts, and papers, and hard-to-locate ephemeral items such as pamphlets and public program notes, although a number of the titles covered are anthologies of these ephemeral materials. The titles covered provide countless leads for those wishing to pursue their research further. This book provides a good beginning.

Review The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Vol. 15: Marh 1789- November 1798 / Princeton University Press:In Volume 15 Jefferson, a veteran of the councils of his own country's revolution, becomes an eyewitness of the opening events of the great upheaval in France in 1789. The Archbishop of Bordeaux and his colleagues of the National Assembly ask Jefferson's aid and counsel in drafting a new constitution; he declines in July but gives a private dinner in August for Lafayette and the moderates who wish to form a coalition and thus avoid civil war. He is catapulted into the limelight by Mirabeau's attack on Necker for the shortage of grain and flour. He advises Lafayette about the latter's proposed draft of a Declaration of Rights and proposes a compromise charter for France in order to gain time, to consolidate the advances already made, and to allow public opinion to ripen. Jefferson dines with De Corny and learns at first hand what happened at the fall of the Bastille. Three days later he is among the crowds with Dugald Stewart, the young Scottish philosopher, as Louis XVI is "led in triumph by his people thro' the streets of the capital. " He writes long dispatches to Jay and private letters to Thomas Paine and Richard Price, among others, detailing the events that he regarded as "the first chapter of the history of European liberty. " Early in September Jefferson becomes ill and, treated by a philosopher-physician, is possessed by the idea that "the earth belongs in usufruct to the living. " He urges Madison to develop this concept and to apply it to American legislation-but his ostensible purpose is supported by arguments addressed wholly to the situation in France, whereby he furnishes justification for the abolition of ancient debts, the public appropriation of feudal grants, the wiping out of hereditary privileges, and the eradication of monopolies. Late in September, with Polly, Patsy, Petit, and two servants, Jefferson leaves Paris for a six months' leave, unaware that the same day the United States Senate confirmed his nomination as Secretary of State. [+]
Four weeks later he lands in Norfolk, where he is greeted by the officials-and finds that politics and anti-federalism are far from inactive in Virginia.

Review John Adams (UNABRIDGED CD) [AUDIOBOOK CD]:The #1 "New York Times" Bestseller Now Available in a Deluxe Unabridged CD Package In this powerful, epic biography, David McCullough unfolds the adventurous life-journey of John Adams, the brilliant, fiercely independent, often irascible, always honest Yankee patriot who spared nothing in his zeal for the American Revolution; who thought, wrote, and spoke out for the "Great Cause" come what might; who traveled far and wide in all seasons and often at extreme risk; who rose to become the second President of the United States and saved the country from blundering into an unnecessary war; who was rightly celebrated for his integrity, and regarded by some as "out of his senses"; and whose marriage to the wise and valiant Abigail Adams is one of the moving love stories in American history. Much about John Adams's life will come as a surprise to many. His rocky relationship with friend and eventual archrival Thomas Jefferson, his courageous voyage on the frigate "Boston" tin the winter of 1778 and his later trek over the Pyrenees are exploits few would have dared and that few listeners will ever forget. Like his masterful, Pulitzer Prize-winning biography "Truman," David McCullough's "John Adams" has the sweep and vitality of a great novel. This is history on a grand scale - an audiobook about politics and war and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, It is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.

Review Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant / IndyPublish.com:Part One Of Two Parts During the last year of his life, when he was dying of cancer, Grant recalled his Ohio boyhood, his West Point years and the grim military campaign in Mexico that ended in military victory but which Grant thought was politically shameful. Grant resigned from the army and returned to civilian life. But then came the rebellion that split the Union and recast Grant's fortune: he proved to be a general who could win. What it takes for victory, we learn from these pages, is an amalgam of qualities, among them unconscious physical courage, foresight, iron-willed determination, the vigorous exercise of command. Among biographies of generals and statesmen, PERSONAL MEMOIRS OF U. S. GRANT rank with the greatest.
