Review Simone Weil as we knew her / Routledge:In 1941 Simone Weil was introduced to Father Jean-Marie Perrin, a priest of the Dominican order whose friendship became one of the most significant influences on her spiritual development. It was for Father Perrin that she wrote her 'spiritual autobiography', contained in Waiting for God, and to him that she later wrote 'Letter to a Priest'. When Weil requested work as a field hand, Perrin sent her to Gustave Thibon, a farmer and Christian philosopher. From 1941-2, Weil stayed with the Thibon family, working in the fields by day while writing by night the notebooks which posthumously became Gravity and Grace and other seminal works. Perrin and Thibon met Weil at a time when her interior life and her creative genius were at the height of their glowing maturity. During the short but deep period of their acquaintance with her, they came to know her as she actually was. Their accounts of this time reveal her to us in the bare parlour of the Dominican convent at Marseilles where, after waiting her turn among a stream of refugees, she discussed her personal problems with Father Perrin. They show her to us in the vineyards of Ardèche, and on the stone seat by the fountain overlooking the Rhone valley where she read Plato to Thibon, her host. First published in 1953, and now newly introduced by Patricia Little, this unique portrait depicts Weil through the eyes of her friends, not as a strange and unaccountable genius but as an ardent and very human young person in search of truth and knowledge.

Review The Papers of Benjamin Franklin, Vol. 21: Volume 21: January 1, 1774 through March 22, 1775 (The Papers of Benjamin Franklin Series) / Yale University Press:Franklin's arrival in France caused a sensation. By the time he reached Paris the city was buzzing with rumors: he had come with a small fortune in gold, to put his grandsons in school and then buy himself a Swiss chateau for his retirement; he had come to negotiate a treaty with France or, failing that, with Britain; he had come to sue for peace, just as he had earlier tried to reach a settlement with the Howes. These reports went the rounds of the diplomatic corps. The Parisians were so busy with conjecture, the Russian Minister informed St. Petersburg, that the police posted orders in all the taverns and coffee houses not to discuss American affairs.

Review Train Wreck: The Life and Death of Anna Nicole Smith / Phoenix Books:She was the most outlandish, outrageous, in-your-face symbol of the age - and suddenly, shockingly, she was gone. In life her antics, adventures and behavior kept a nation riveted; in death she stunned a world gripped by the surprise and swiftness of her unexpected passing. The woman was, of course, Anna Nicole Smith. This is the story of the little girl from west of nowhere, born into a broken, dysfunctional, dirt-poor family, told by the one woman who knew her best - her sister. Her fierce resolve, pluck, luck and determination allowed her to claw her way to celebrity status, becoming a tabloid staple, and to reach the potential of unimaginable wealth. And then, in a moment, she was gone, not yet 40 years old. A Horatio Alger story with a bitter ending, TRAIN WRECK- The Life and Death of Anna Nicole Smith, is the definitive story of the rise and swift fall of one of the most compelling characters to blaze across the American sky.

Review Papers of John Adams, Volume 11, January - September 1781 (Adams Papers) / Belknap Press:In mid-March 1781 John Adams received his commission and instructions as minister to the Netherlands and embarked on the boldest initiative of his diplomatic career. Disappointed by the lack of interest shown by Dutch investors in his efforts to raise a loan for the United States, Adams changed his tactics, and in a memorial made a forthright appeal to the States General of the Netherlands for immediate recognition of the United States. Published in Dutch, English, and French, it offered all of Europe a radical vision of the ordinary citizen's role in determining political events. In this volume, for the first time, the circumstances and reasoning behind Adams's bold moves in the spring of 1781 are presented in full. In July the French court summoned Adams, the only American in Europe empowered to negotiate an Anglo-American peace, to Paris for consultations regarding an offer made by Austria and Russia to mediate the Anglo-French war. In his correspondence with France's foreign minister, the Comte de Vergennes, Adams passionately insisted that the United States was fully and unambiguously independent and sovereign and must be recognized as such by Great Britain before any negotiations took place. This volume shows John Adams to be a determined and resourceful diplomat, unafraid to go beyond the bounds of traditional diplomacy to implement his vision of American foreign policy. (20050901).

D. B. FOREWORD T JJLHE story of Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes is the story of his country. The narrative cannot begin with the flat date of his birth i 84 1. This was a man whose presence carried tradition. Everyone who met him felt it, and it was not oppressive but inspiring. Over his shoulder one glimpsed somehow his ancestors. His roots reached deep into American earth it was the strength of these roots that permitted so splendid a flowering. Wendells, Olivers, Jacksons, Holmeses solid people, sound people and adventurous people. They left Oliver Wendell Holmes, Junior, a superb inheritance, one that balanced him as the nine tenths of the iceberg we do not see balances that glittering pinnacle. To know Justice Holmes at eighty courtly, witty, scholarly, kind it is well to have acquaintance with his Calvinist grandfather, Abiel Holmes, with his handsome, worldly great-grandfather, Judge Wendell, with his mother from whom he inherited, he said, a trace of melancholy. Above all it is well to know his father, the sturdy Yankee who wrote bad verse and good books professor of anatomy, talkative five-foot-five Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table who lived upon applause and said so with engaging frankness. It is not hard to know these people. They were articulate, given to writing down what they saw and thought. And they were passion ately interested in their country. In the books they wrote, in their letters, their diaries, the welfare of the American Union plays a large part. Because of this, the opening page of our story fell naturally into place.

Review The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein, Volume 6: The Berlin Years: Writings, 1914-1917 (Original texts) / Princeton University Press:Presented in this volume are Albert Einstein's writings from his arrival in Berlin in the spring of 1914 to take up his new position at the Prussian Academy of Sciences through the end of 1917. During these years he completed the general theory of relativity-the relativistic theory of gravitation-and this was surely the high point of his scientific life. His writings on relativity in this volume range from general treatments of the theory to detailed calculations of specific consequences and his first attempt at a relativistic account of cosmology. They also include his popular exposition of the special and general theories, first published in 1917 and still a valuable account for the general reader. As soon as the difficulties on the path to general relativity had been overcome, Einstein returned to the riddles of the quantum theory. His major clarification of the quantum theory of radiation appears here along with his lesser known contribution to the formulation of quantum conditions. This volume also contains the papers describing Einstein's only experimental investigation, a study of Ampère's molecular currents, which he carried out with the Dutch physicist W. J. de Haas. Before the beginning of World War I, Einstein had never expressed his views on nonscientific subjects. [+]
Yet one of his first reactions to this previously unthinkable general war was to sign an "Appeal to Europeans" urging an immediate end to hostilities. Every document in The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein appears in the language in which it was written.

Review Abraham Lincoln, President-Elect: The Four Critical Months from Election to Inauguration / McFarland & Company:Immediately after Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States of America, the nation began to experience extreme turmoil. From his election in November 1860 until his inauguration five months later, Lincoln was pushed, pulled, blamed and praised by all people from all sides as the country began its inevitable slide toward war. Southerners refused to see him as anything but a "Black Republican," an abolitionist poorly disguised as a moderate who was committed only to destroying their beloved slave system, and with it, their entire way of life. Northerners, meanwhile, pleaded with Lincoln to speak out and reassure the country that his election, and his policies, brought not separation, but harmony. This engaging work utilizes, in addition to better known works, sources sometimes overlooked or under appreciated: newspaper accounts from across America (particularly from the cities Lincoln passed through on his journey to Washington), journals and diaries of his contemporaries, and correspondence. Lincoln's speeches also appear here as they did in newspapers in 1860 and 1861; crowd reactions and Lincoln's occasional banter with individuals who called out to him are faithfully reproduced, as well.
