Review Empire: The Life, Legend, And Madness of Howard Hughes / Blackstone Audiobooks:

Howard Hughes lived one of the greatest, most heroic, misunderstood, mysterious, bizarre, and tragic lives in American history. In this brilliantly documented biography, the mythology that surrounded that life is disentangled from the truth. Hughes had always been different. Certainly his riches set him apart, but he was also tough. Orphaned and a millionaire at eighteen, Hughes repudiated his relatives, seized control of the Hughes Tool Company, the linchpin of his fortune, and went on to become a flamboyant movie producer, holder of many world aviation records, principal owner of Trans World Airlines, a critically important defense contractor, Hollywood's most pursued and elusive bachelor, and partner of the United States government. This is an epic biography of an epic figure who bestrode the world like a colossus yet could not master himself. Though he rose to fame after a record-setting flight around the world and the construction of an unprecedented fleet of airplanes, aerospace industry icon Howard Hughes wasted millions of dollars in production, swindled taxpayers through self-serving philanthropy projects and regularly lied to stockholders. In his spare time he worked for Joe McCarthy, was an avid supporter of segregation and nearly destroyed himself through drugs. In this biography of Hughes, authors David Barlett and James Steele reveal the dark, often unlawful, existence that can accompany an American success story.

Review A Chief Justice's Progress: John Marshall from Revolutionary Virginia to the Supreme Court / Greenwood Press:

Widely regarded as America's most important Chief Justice, John Marshall influenced our constitutional, political, and economic development as much as any American. He handed down landmark decisions on judicial review, federal-state relations, contracts, corporations, and commercial regulation during a thirty-four year tenure that encompassed five presidencies, a second war of independence, the demise of the first American party system, and the advent of Jacksonianism and market capitalism. This is the first interpretive study of Marshall's early life that emphasizes the formative influences on him before he joined the Court. By that time his character and attitudes were fully formed through his childhood in the Virginia gentry, his service in the state militia and Continental Army, and his work as a prominent lawyer, a Federalist, and a diplomat. Drawing heavily on Marshall's own writings, this study views his pre-Supreme Court life as a cumulative experience that formed the identity and value system that he brought to bear on his experiences as Chief Justice. Robarge examines Marshall's social and political "education" in the unique milieu of late 18th century Virginia for its own intrinsic interest, as well as for its relationship to his profound contribution to the Court. The events and situations that shaped Marshall's personality and attitudes directly influenced his leadership style. They also had a deep impact upon his efforts to establish an independent judiciary, to unify the nation through territorial expansion and a legal "common market," and to revive the moribund Federalist party as a balance to the dominant Republicans led by the cousin he detested, Thomas Jefferson.

Review A Storied Singer: Frank Sinatra as Literary Conceit (Contributions to the Study of Popular Culture) / Greenwood Press:

Frank Sinatra forever altered American art and culture. His life and work is mythified in countless books and essays. This book offers a much-needed fresh approach to The Chairman of the Board. Artists from all varieties of media have used Sinatra to create their own works and, in many cases, their own Sinatras. Sinatra's legacy is not confined to the music he created-his shadow, his aura, and his mere existence helped to inform the lives and works of generations. Gigliotti examines how genre and literary fiction, lyric and satiric poetry, rock and folk music, and even domestic drama have conjured and symbolically employed the legendary singer. Each of the eleven chapters of A Storied Singer details a different use of Sinatra. Subjects include the lyrics of Sammy Cahn, recent novels such as The Death of Frank Sinatra, and the many songs that are about or mention Old Blue Eyes. Gigliotti also examines Sinatra as seen through international eyes, from British songwriters and Spanish novelists to American expatriates and Israeli filmmakers, providing an unusual and fascinating look at a major American figure.

Review Carl Gustav Jung (Key Figures in Counselling and Psycho Therapy Series) (Key Figures in Counselling and Psychotherapy series) / Sage Publications Ltd:

`This book offers a fresh and full introduction to Jung's psychology - it will be appreciated by many, from novice counsellors to the well-read analyst who will find. that there is much to learn about C G Jung' - Journal of Analytical Psychology `Ann Casement achieves an almost impossible task in her contribution to this useful series from SAGE, namely to create a lively overview of a complex man and his equally complex contributuions to analytic psychotherapy. Casement achieves in this short book what Jung may have hoped to do when he reported a dream following a meeting with a publisher who was encouraging him to write a popular text of his ideas for the non-specialist. He had rejected the idea out of hand, but later he had a dream that changed his mind. "Jung found himself `standing in a public place addressing a great multitude of people who were listening to him with rapt attention and understanding what he said'" ' - Self & Society `Clearly written and well-informed, this impressive book is likely to become the single volume of choice for those psychotherapists and counsellors engaging with Jung and Jungian psychology as part of their training (whether wholly Jungian or more pluralistic). [+]
Ann Casement writes as an informed and enthusiastic insider who has also managed to retain her critical distance - hence what she has to say will also be relevant to more experienced readers' - Andrew Samuels, University of Essex Carl Gustav Jung is an enlightening and insightful guide to the life and work of one of the founding fathers of psychotherapy and most influential thinkers in modern times. Combining insights from his early life and his wide-ranging intellectual interests in philosophy, mysticism and parapsychology, Ann Casement traces the development of Jung's ideas on the functioning of the human mind, including the origins of core Jungian concepts such as archetypes, teleology, alchemy and the collective unconscious. Examining the relationship between Freud and Jung through their prolific correspondence, the author charts the growing divergence of opinion, which culminated in the birth of analytical psychology, the branch of psychotherapy established by Jung. Notwithstanding his unquestionable contribution to modern intellectual thought, Jung has been subject to severe criticism, including allegations of anti-Semitism and sympathy with the Nazi party. The book sets out clearly both the arguments levelled against Jung and responses to his critics. Particularly for the reader new to Jungian thinking, this book places the central concepts fully into context and provides the ideal starting point for further study of Jung and his work. Ann Casement is a Jungian Analyst in Private Practice, London and Chair of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy. Her previous publications include Post-Jungians Today.

Review Churchill: A Member for Woodford / Intl Specialized Book Service Inc:

For nearly forty years 'among the glades of Epping Forest' Churchill found a base for his distinguished parliamentary life: it sustained him during his ten years in the political wilderness and during the fierce ordeals of tragedy and triumph in the war years. This book relates with anecdotal and archival evidence the attempt to unseat him after what many supporters thought an injudicious Munich speech. However Churchill was persuaded to stay on by loyal friends, thus ensuring his availability for a Cabinet post a few months later at the outbreak of war.
