Review The Malay Archipelago I: Scientific Travellers, 1789-1874 (Scientific Travellers, 1790-1877) / Routledge:

The Malay Archipelago is perhaps the most celebrated of all writings on Indonesia. Attracting huge public interest at the time of publication, this two-part work ranks with the nineteenth century's most important travel writing and Wallace's name continues to be inextricably linked to the area. Wallace was best known for his discovery and description of the faunal discontinuity that now bears his name, "Wallace's Line," extending between the islands of Bali and Lombok and Borneo and Sulawesi, described here in The Malay Archipelago. This led to his theory of natural selection, which was presented to the Linnaean Society in 1858.

Dewey code: 581.29
List Price: $362.00
Price: $362.00

Review Mechanisms of Plant Defense Responses (Developments in Plant Pathology) / Springer:

This book presents a collection of papers that give a comprehensive description of the major areas of research on the interactions between plants and their pathogens. State-of-the-art knowledge about research on microbial avirulence genes and plant resistance genes, about pathogenicity factors and signals for establishment of infection, about elicitors and intermediates in the signalling pathway, and about the genes involved in plant responses to pathogens and environmental stress is reviewed. The different topics covered show that modern tools of plant cellular and molecular biology are now available to investigate very significant models of plant-pathogen interactions and to identify the molecular determinants of the two partners that trigger defence responses, the signals involved and the mechanism of their transduction, the spatial and temporal regulation of defence gene expression in relation to the spread or localization of the pathogen. The first trials to exploit these results for enhancing plant resistance and crop field by biotechnology are presented. The book is a main reference source for research scientists and advanced students.

Review Himalayan Journals I: Scientific Travellers, 1789-1874 (Scientific Travellers 1790-1877) / Routledge:

The travels and publications of Joseph Hooker, author of the Himalayan Journals, are inextricably tied to British colonialism and Empire-building. Travelling in his role as director of the Kew Royal Botanic Gardens, he collected about 7,000 species in India and Nepal, added 25 new rhododendron species to Kew (creating a rhododendron craze among British gardeners), and brought over samples of both rubber and quinine from the Amazon. Hooker dedicated these Journals to his close friend Charles Darwin. Contents of this work-reprinted here in two parts-include many pictures and foldout maps of the areas covered by his travels.

Review Pseudomonas syringae and Related Pathogens: Biology and Genetics / Springer:

This volume mainly reports on new and recent advances of different aspects of Pseudomonas syringae, a plant pathogenic bacterial species that includes a high number of pathogens of important crops, which is an important model organism in plant pathology. In addition also some fluorescent Pseudomonas spp. , responsible for new and emerging diseases, as well as pathogens previously included in the above genus and now classified in the Genera Ralstonia, Acidovorax are considered. Each chapter, cured by leading scientists in the field, reports recent knowledge on the ecology and epidemiology, molecular, physiological and biochemical aspects of pathogen-plant interactions, disease management and control, diagnosis and detection, and taxonomy of P. syringae. This book is an important tool for graduate students, as well as research plant pathologists, plant bacteriologists, plant microbe molecular biologists and cell microbe biologists.

Review Elsevier Science / Field Crop Ecosystems (Ecosystems of the World) Creator: C.J. Pearson
Publication date: 1992-01-01
Dewey code: 630
List Price: $339.00
Price: $339.00

Review Field Crop Ecosystems (Ecosystems of the World) / Elsevier Science:

Hardbound. This book examines how agriculturalists and ecologists look at field-crop ecosystems and attempt better management of these systems with the aid of computer modelling. Most of the book describes an array of the world's most important systems in detail but using language suited to readers who are not familiar with agricultural technology. Each chapter presents a "slice in time" of environmental, human and technical attributes of a particular cropping system along with the social and cultural background which contributed to that particular system. The topics of the chapters dealing with individual field-crop ecosystems were chosen to represent most of the important agricultural systems and a wide variety of climate zones.

Review Naturalist on the River Amazons I: Scientific Travellers, 1789-1874 / Routledge:

Bates lived and studied in Amazonian South America for a total of eleven years, and is still regarded as one of the world's pioneering naturalists and entomologists. This classic two-volume work elucidates his concept of mimetic resemblance-known to this day as "Batesian mimicry"-and displays his significant contribution to the early development of the theory of natural selection. This is a reprint of the Bates family copy, the exclusive property of the Natural History Museum, and includes a family tree of the Leicester branch of Bates family. The volumes are richly illustrated with numerous plates and a foldout map of Bates' journey along the Amazon.
