Review Innovating for Failure: Government Policy and the Early British Computer Industry (History of Computing) / The MIT Press:From computers to body scanners, from hovercraft to monoclonal antibodies, British researchers have been among the world's leaders in scientific discovery and invention. But British business has failed repeatedly to exploit these discoveries. This first in-depth history of the early British computer industry provides a valuable case study in the implementation of public innovation policy with lessons for any country trying to compete for sales in international high-technology markets. The birth of modern computers in Great Britain coincided with the establishment in the late 1940s of the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), which was charged with assisting commercial development of new technologies. John Hendry details ten years of effort by the NRDC to establish a British computer industry able to compete internationally, particularly with IBM. He examines the reasons for their failure to achieve this and explores the consequences and implications of this failure. Focusing on the creation, implementation, and management of government sponsorship policies and the responses of businesses to those policies, Hendry discusses the broad issues of government policy and the exploitation of technology in the United Kingdom the commercial development of computer technology in post-World War II America and Britain, the genesis and impact of NRDC policies for commercializing the new technology, and the conflict between national competitiveness and the ideals of fairness and consensus. John Hendry is Lecturer in Strategic Management and Director of the Centre for Strategic Management and Organizational Change at the Cranfield School of Management, Cranfield Institute of Technology, England Innovating for Failure is included in the History of Computing series edited by I. Bernard Cohen and William Aspray.

Review Memories That Shaped an Industry: Decisions Leading to IBM System/360 (History of Computing) / MIT Press:Development of ferrite core memory technology during the 1950s was probably the most important innovation that made stored-program computers a commercial reality. IBM's leadership in this development made possible the introduction in 1964 of the IBM System/360, which was so widely copied that it became a standard for electronic stored-program computers that have become so much a part of American life. This book provides a rare and candid glimpse into the innovations as well as the immense risks and imprecisions sometimes involved in technical decision making. It identifies the basic characteristics of technology management that the author believes accounted for IBM's success during this period, and gives a balanced view of the contributions by talented scientists and engineers both within and outside the company. The book chronicles a twenty-five-year period during which IBM evolved from the position of leading supplier of electromechanical punched-card equipment to dominance in the field of electronic computers. It describes IBM's response to the postwar challenge of electronics, its highly successful cooperative effort with MIT on an automated air defense system, the introduction of commercial ferrite core memories, developments and decisions leading to System/360, and the manufacturing problems posed by System/360's success. An internationally recognized leader in magnetics and computer memory technologies, Emerson W. Pugh is a member of the research staff at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights and author of the widely used text, Principles of Electricity and Magnetism. This book is included in The MIT Press Series in the History of Computing, edited by I. [+]

Review The Information Society: An International Perspective / Praeger Publishers:Katz examines the development of the "information society" in developing countries and offers a comprehensive comparison of how such a society evolves in developed and developing nations. Among the issues explored are: the emergence of a sizable information workforce across countries; the occurrence of internal structural similarities of information workforces in different countries; and the existence of global trends in the diffusion of information techniques. In the absence of common trends and development patterns, the author offers an explanation of the factors causing different evolutional paths. Based on his analysis, Katz derives new hypotheses for the diffusion of information technologies and the expansion of information workforce in developing countries.

Review Oracle's E-Business Play : Hits and Misses / Giga Information Group, Inc.:This IdeaBundle looks at Oracle as a player in the e-business space. With offerings for commerce, supply chain and other key functions, Oracle’s ambitious initiatives have met with some successes but also with some challenges. Giga’s analysts look at vision, execution, and partnerships in a series of penetrating looks across the portfolio. Don’t make that decision until you read these. Read this IdeaBundle for an in-depth look at Oracle’s e-business offerings. In these six IdeaBytes you will find out why:Frequent changes of vision damage the credibility of any given idea, as in numerous Oracle high-profile "revolutionary" product announcementsSize and momentum matter in enterprise software vendors - Large vendors like Oracle have more money for research and development, broader market reach, greater third-party vendor and consulting support and usually greater stabilityGiga is hard-pressed to recommend Oracle's commerce server and the related products in its e-marketplace offerings for large companiesThe integration vs. best-of-breed decision can be a war between managers’ brand preferences. Better to find out which vendor supports the required business processesThe application database market will quickly evolve to a tiered environment with IBM owning the mainframe environment, Microsoft owning the NT database environment and Oracle and IBM battling it out in the Unix environment; Oracle correctly understands the ASP model, though immature, will be exploited with increasing pace.
