Review Progestins and the Mammary Gland: From Basic Science to Clinical Applications (Ernst Schering Foundation Symposium Proceedings) / Springer:

Progestins play a key role in reproductive endocrinology and as pharmaceutical drugs for contraception and in combined hormone therapy. To further our understanding of progestin action in the mammary gland, an international symposium, attended by leading researchers from academia and industry, was held in Berlin, 21–23 March 2007. Genetic mouse models helped to elucidate the role of progestins, both in normal breast development and in disease. Mechanistic molecular studies inspired the design of new progestins with improved tissue selectivity. In addition, the clinical impact of progesterone receptor agonists and antagonists for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer was discussed.

Review Checkpoint Responses in Cancer Therapy (Cancer Drug Discovery and Development) / Humana Press:

Extensive research has uncovered a set of molecular surveillance mechanisms commonly called checkpoints which tightly monitor cell-cycle processes. Today s anticancer drug development has identified many of these cell-cycle checkpoint molecules as effective targets. Research now promises to uncover a new generation of anticancer drugs with improved therapeutic indices based on their ability to target emerging checkpoint components. Checkpoint Responses in Cancer Therapy summarizes the advances made over the past 20 years, identifying components of cell-cycle checkpoints and their molecular regulation during checkpoint activation and validating the use of checkpoint proteins as targets for the development of anticancer drugs. This book s distinguished panel of authors takes a close look at topics ranging from the major molecular players affecting DNA synthesis and the response to DNA damage to advances made in the identification of chemical compounds capable of inhibiting individual mitotic kinases. Illuminating and authoritative, Checkpoint Responses in Cancer Therapy offers a critical summary of findings for researchers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries and a valuable resource for academic scientists in cancer research and the study of cell-cycle regulation, signal transduction and apoptosis.

Review Brain Tumor Invasion: Biological, Clinical, and Therapeutic Considerations / Wiley-Liss:

Brain Tumor Invasion Biological, Clinical, and Therapeutic Considerations Edited by Tom Mikkelsen Rolf Bjerkvig Ole Didrik Laerum Mark L. Rosenblum Recent advances in molecular biology have given us profound new insights into the behavior of primary brain tumors. Not only are such tumors more diffuse in their infiltration of brain tissue and therefore less amenable to surgery than brain tumors originating elsewhere in the body—it now appears that the central nervous system and the normal brain itself constitute a biological environment conducive to the uncontrolled spread of primary tumors. Brain Tumor Invasion is the first comprehensive reference devoted to the invasive behavior of primary brain tumors. It examines the biological mechanisms responsible for the increased ability of gliomas to metastasize in the central nervous system, and discusses the role of chemical carcinogens, growth factors, oncogenes, and tumor suppressors in the progression of such metastases. This book surveys the latest research in the field, reviews present and future prospects of anti-invasive brain tumor therapy, and even translates preclinical trials and other research results into potential new therapies. The material is divided into five main categories:Developmental biology and molecular neuro-oncologyPathological and clinical features of malignant brain tumorsModels for the study of brain tumor invasion in vivo and in vitroMechanisms of invasionNew therapeutic strategiesBrain Tumor Invasion offers dozens of maps and photographs that illustrate topics under discussion. This in-depth introduction to one of the most difficult problems in the management of brain tumors is indispensable to neuro-oncologists involved in brain tumor research and therapy. It is also useful to researchers in cancer biology, neuroscience, cell biology, and molecular genetics.

Review Advances in Cancer Screening / Springer:

Screening for cancer is an important focus of cancer control. Yet screening, as it involves administering a test to large segments of the population deemed to be at risk for the disease of interest, is potentially a major consumer of scarce health care resources. In addition, the benefits sought from cancer screening, particularly reduction in mortality from the disease, are not always realized, either for biological or organizational reasons. Thus, the paradigm that `early detection must always be beneficial', taught to health care professionals, and publicized widely through the media to the public, has been challenged in the last two decades for a number of cancer sites. It is the purpose of Advances in Cancer Screening to determine the extent to which the requirements for the introduction of population-based screening programs have been met, as a result of extensive research on screening during the last two decades, with a major concentration on findings from the recent decade.

Review Pancreatic Cancer (Recent Results in Cancer Research) / Springer:

Although pancreatic cancer is one of the most serious forms of cancers, the outlook for patients could be improved. The lack of clinical symptoms of early, surgically removable disease most often limits curative treatment options. The aggressive tumor cell biology, leading to a locally advanced nature of the disease and to early metastases, allows curative resection in only 20% of patients at the time of diagnosis. Patients are therefore often faced with a dreadful prognosis from a state of almost full physical health. Furthermore, because there is a high recurrence rate after curative resection, treatment of this tumor entity becomes a great challenge. This book gives insight into the current understanding of the management of pancreatic cancer and considers recent findings in cancer research. It provides answers to questions of how to know when cancer is respectable, how to proceed when the diagnosis comes too late for a curative approach, and how to assess different study results. Moreover, it highlights new upcoming therapeutic options and experimental approaches, which might further improve the future prospects for patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

Review History of the European Association for Haematopathology / Springer:

Because of progress in immunology, specifically the discovery of the B- and T-lymphocyte systems, it was imperative to rethink the concepts of malignant lymphomas, which resulted in the development of new lymphoma classifications. One of these was the Kiel classification, proposed by the European Lymphoma Club in 1974. During the following years the classification was refined, correlated with clinical findings, discussed at length, and put to the test against other classifications. It was soon widely accepted in Europe and later sparked the founding of the European Association for Haematopathology in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1988. In 2001 the Kiel classification was incorporated into the new WHO classification.

Publication date: 2007-12-10
Dewey code: 616.99418
List Price: $71.00

Review Multiple Myelomas, An Issue of Hematology / Oncology Clinics (The Clinics: Internal Medicine) / Saunders:

Although treatable with conventional and high dose therapies, multiple myeloma (MM) remains incurable. However, recent advances in oncogenomics, coupled with increased understanding of the role of the bone marrow (BM) microenvironment in MM pathogenesis, has provided the basis for a new treatment paradigm targeting the tumor cell in the BM milieu to overcome conventional drug resistance and improve patient outcome. This text will first describe advances in molecular pathogenesis of MM due to cutting edge comparative genomic hybridization, gene microarray, and proteomic profiling of MM cells. The molecular basis for the growth, survival, drug resistance, and migration of MM cells, including extracellular matrix proteins, BM stromal cells, and cytokines in the BM milieu, will next be delineated using both laboratory and animal model systems. Importantly, recent advances in the pathogenesis of bone disease in MM will be described. These preclinical studies all will set the stage for the bench to bedside translation of scientific advances to the clinic to improve patient outcome. The clinical approach to patients with plasma cell dyscrasias has been transformed in the past 5 years. There are now uniform definitions of monoclonal gammopathy of unclear significance and improved predictors of who will develop MM. Biologically-based prognostic factors form the basis for new staging systems predictive of patient outcome. The approach to the patient with newly diagnosed, relapsed, and relapsed refractory MM has been transformed, with improved overall and extent of response as well as progression-free and overall survival, in both transplant candidates and elderly patients. [+]
Novel targeted therapies and immune-based strategies hold great promise to enhance treatment options even further. Finally our ability to identify, prophylax, and treat complications of MM and its treatment has advanced in a parallel fashion. Myeloma therefore represents a novel treatment paradigm targeting the tumor cell, tumor host interaction, and tumor microenvironment which can serve as a model to outcome in patients with other hematologic cancers and solid tumors as well.

Review Treatment of Multiple Myeloma and Related Disorders / Cambridge University Press:

Due to major advances in understanding the biology and pathogenesis of the disease, the management of multiple myeloma is changing rapidly. New diagnostic and prognostic criteria have been introduced, and treatment options are multiplying with high-dose chemotherapy regimens, stem cell transplants, and the development of novel agents and immune-based strategies that target tumor cells directly. This book is aimed at the practitioner who is looking to put these advances into clinical context. It will serve as an up-to-date resource for treatment of myeloma and related disorders. Chapters are written by international authorities and contain color photos, diagrams, and algorithms outlining preferred treatment strategies. Relevant scientific information is integrated throughout, but the focus here is on providing practical therapeutic guidance for oncologists and hematologists caring for myeloma patients. The book covers all myeloma subtypes and related disorders, including amyloidosis, Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia, plasmacytoma, MGUS, and POEMS syndrome.
