Unit 4: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease/Pneumonia This simulation focuses on the care of a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which progresses into nosocomial pneumonia. The simulation guides the learner through the pathophysiology of copd and the patient's presentation, focusing on signs and symptoms. Diagnostic and lab tests, as well as assessments and interventions are emphasized. The simulation requires the learner to use critical thinking skills when the patient's condition deteriorates. Treatment modalities include the need for airway management, use of arterial blood gases, chest x-rays, and pharmacological management. Patient education is emphasized, including coping mechanisms, medication compliance, exercise, hygie ne, understanding disease process, and nutrition.
