Review CIM LAN Switching (Network Simulator CD-ROM) / Cisco Press:With CIM LAN Switching, you can master the concepts and technologies to run and manage efficient campus networks. Offering self-paced instruction and practice, this robust learning tool gives you a quick and cost-effective way to acquire Cisco knowledge and expertise. From an overview of LAN switching, virtual LAN (VLAN) concepts, and Ethernet, ATM, Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI), and Token Ring technologies to the deployment of Cisco Catalyst® LAN switches, you’ll learn how to implement complete Cisco campus network solutions. Mastering techniques developed by Cisco Technical Assistance Center engineers, you’ll practice configuring and troubleshooting key LAN switching technologies, VLANs, trunk ports, route switch modules in conjunction with broadcast and multicast traffic, and ATM LAN emulation (LANE) protocols within a Catalyst LAN switch. CIM LAN Switching is an excellent preparation tool for the CCNA, CCNP, and CCIE exams. Most engineers like to learn new systems by playing around with them to see what happens in response to various inputs. You can learn software that way easily enough, but systems that involve expensive hardware-internetworks that are based on Cisco routers, for example-aren't often available for engineers' playtime. A simulator that accurately mimics the behavior of real-life hardware and software systems can be almost as good as the real thing, however, and that's what Cisco Systems has provided in the Cisco Interactive Mentor (or CIM) line of multimedia CD-ROMs. At the core of the CIM self-education environment, you'll find a simulation of the Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS) as it appears on Cisco routers. The simulator allows you to do all of the configuration (and misconfiguration) that you like, and faithfully reacts as a real-life network would. [+]
It even allows you to perform troubleshooting. Cisco Interactive Mentor: LAN Switching applies the CIM formula to local area network (LAN) switching, as performed by the Cisco Catalyst 5000. The software presents information about switching topics as neatly illustrated text documents (that you can hear read aloud). More importantly, it presents you with a series of LAN-switching laboratory problems, and allows you to solve them on the IOS simulator. You can work freehand from diagrams that show you what your configurations are supposed to do, or scroll through (or listen to) instructions that tell you the commands to issue. The effect is quite convincing. No simulator is perfect, and this one is flawed by restricting you to commands that are relevant to the problem at hand. It would be better if it allowed you a complete set of tools with which to foul up. But what's here is great, and this multimedia training kit should help Cisco trainees learn about their platforms during time away from live systems and training labs. -David Wall Topics covered: Data-switching fundamentals, plus the specifics (with exercises) of configuring ports, virtual local area networks (VLANs), trunks, the Route Switch Module (RSM), multicasting with Cisco Group Management Protocol (CGMP), token ring, FDDI, and ATM LAN emulation (LANE). There's troubleshooting on the simulator, too.

Review Infrastructures for Virtual Enterprises - Networking Industrial Enterprises (INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION FOR INFORMATION PROCESSING Volume 27) / Springer:The growing interest in virtual organizations by both the research and industry sectors is the main motivation behind compiling this collection of original contributions as an introduction to this subject. The book primarily addresses the design and development of infrastructures for industrial Virtual Enterprises (VEs); however, the architecture described and several of the tools and design approaches presented are generic enough to be applied to other kinds of virtual organizations. The key areas described in the book include: Reference architectures; Safe communications; Distributed information management; Coordination and workflow; Distributed business processes management; Standards for electronic data interchange; Partners search and VE design and creation; VE configuration and modeling; Inter-operation among technologies; and Integration and reengineering of legacy systems. £/LIST£ In complement to the technological aspects, the social and organizational impacts are also analyzed and a set of recommendations is included. To cover the main technical issues, the book first describes the details of the architecture and the framework developed within the ESPRIT project PRODNET II. Second, to broaden the scope, the book covers several other alternative development approaches. As such, the book is divided into four parts. The first two parts present the work carried out and the innovative results reached within the PRODNET project. Part I provides an introduction to the main VE concepts and requirements, and Part II addresses the PRODNET approach and solutions. Part III of the book is based on a number of selected contributions from several other advanced international research and development projects. [+]
Finally, Part IV summarizes the achievements and suggests directions for future research and development. Although the book is prepared in the framework of the PRO-VE'99 conference and is composed of multi-author chapters, all chapters in Parts I, II, and IV are carefully edited for technical accuracy and uniform style of presentation, in order to avoid the typical redundancies found in proceedings books and to facilitate its sequential reading as a textbook. Part III, however, has the usual structure found in proceedings books. Due to current advances in information and communication technology, the base support environments required for the development of VEs now exist. Therefore, the transition from concepts to real systems has become a reality. This book provides a timely approach to such developments. Infrastructure for Virtual Enterprises is essential reading for researchers and engineering students in virtual enterprises (production engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering), as well as for engineers and practitioners in manufacturing systems organization and planning.

Review Java Strategies: High-Performance Application Development for the Internet and Intranets / Computer Technology Research Corporation:While the Web has created a cross-platform interface to text and graphics, the most interesting applications of the Web are interactive. This new 235-page report from CTR examines the benefits and disadvantages of Sun Microsystems' Java. This information will assist information systems (IS) managers in planning, implementing, and evaluating effective Internet and intranet applications. What Is Java? While the Web was busily hyperlinking information and making it available worldwide with great success, its limitations as a two-way medium were easily recognized. Interactivity with Web pages was limited to sending E-mail to Web site administrators. Enter Java, a cross-platform programming language developed by Sun Microsystems. Java is the leading tool available for developing interactive applications. Small Java programs called applets can be embedded in Web pages, downloaded, and executed on the user's system, regardless of the user's operating system (OS). CTR's new Java Strategies: High-performance Application Development for the Internet and Intranets report examines Java's potential and its drawbacks, including problems with execution speed in current implementations. The report offers an in-depth comparison of Java and Microsoft's ActiveX, as well as a description of Java's security framework. [+]
Java represents a paradigm shift in computing from static software to dynamically delivered applications with true cross-platform compatibility. Although Java is not a panacea, it is a powerful tool with promise. Java Applications on the Server While Java applets are relatively popular on the Web, server-side Java is being used increasingly to develop impressive applications on the server side. The use of Java alleviates the need for Common Gateway Interface (CGI) scripts and eliminates the concern over users without Java-enabled browsers. CTR's report explores the advantages and disadvantages of servlets, which are server implementations of Java. Also included is a discussion of Java's relationship to the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) and its effect on server-side Java programs. Java Development Tools and Software The Java Development Kit (JDK), a package of Java utilities and development tools, includes an interpreter that enables users to run Java applications. The report discusses future directions of the JDK, including improvements in version 1. 1 and personal editions for PCs, network computers (NCs), set-top boxes, and telephones. The report also covers integrating Java with existing databases and other development tools such as the Abstract Windowing Toolkit (AWT) and third-party development tools. JavaBeans, a component architecture for Java applets and applications, extends the power of Java and provides a more dynamic environment. Although very similar to ActiveX, JavaBeans offers platform neutrality and is more compatible with today's distributed network environments. The report offers an in-depth analysis of JavaBeans and its impact on the software market. Java Security Issues Java's architecture was designed for security, allowing companies to distribute applets from public Web pages without fear of destroying data on the user's computer. While this provides for a more secure network computing environment, it also limits the functionality of applets. The report discusses the potential and real security threats of Java. Various security models for applets are covered, as well as considerations for creating secure Java programs for the enterprise. CTR's Java Strategies: High-performance Application Development for the Internet and Intranets report examines the multitude of Java implementations, from Web-based applets to full-scale applications to smart cards, and will help IS professionals effectively evaluate the role Java should play in their enterprise.
