Dewey code: 940

Review Guadalcanal: The Island of Fire / Creative Arts Book Company:

Here is one fighter pilot's view of the bitterly fought struggle that began just eight months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Poorly equipped and low on rations, with low fuel supplies, inferior equipment, and uncertain support from the rear, the beleaguered Americans somehow maintained a precarious toehold on this strategically located island. A gripping account of the "six desperate months of combat" at Guadalcanal, Robert Lawrence Ferguson tells the story of the Army's 67th Fighter Squadron, the "Fighting Cocks," or "Game Cocks. " Eventually becoming the 347th Fighter Group, the squadron was attached to the last 1st Marine Corps division. These pilots gave their air support to Marine and Army infantry forces with bombing and staffing runs that led to the defeat of the Japanese at Guadalcanal in 1942.

Review Hydraulicians in Europe / IAHR:

This is a biographical dictionary of leaders in hydraulic engineering and fluid mechanics. Communication between hydraulic engineers often refers to people whose names relate to equations, or diagrams or even to a certain procedure. Who were these people? This book answers these questions by presenting hundreds of short biographies of the most important individuals in Europe who have significantly contributed to knowledge in hydraulics and hydrodynamics, but also in dam engineering and fluid dynamics, and water-related sciences in general. Many of these persons have been associated with IAHR and thus may be considered our professional fathers. The book intends to highlight a great history of engineering and applied mathematics, and add to the history of technology in general.

Frances Lief Neer's work since 1981 tells of her life in the past twenty years. Since she went blind in 1981, she has written wonderful volumes that illustrate how individuals can thrive without the benefit of sight. She graces us with her wisdom; she teaches through her own example. This is the Frances Lief Neer we've all come to know and love. At last, Ms. Neer unveils the rest of her story. Fearless throughout her long and triumphantly full life, Ms. Neer transports readers from the Rockaway of her youth to her San Francisco of today. Through her still passionate point of view, her exceptional sense of humor and timing, the author reveals herself: highly motivated, never downtrodden, and as vibrant and vital today as ever.

Review Rising from Hell / Creative Arts Book Company:

"I was in a hospital with a severe brain injury. I was semi-paralyzed on my right side: I couldn't speak or eat. I had double vision. I couldn't walk. And I was strapped to a bed for my own protection. But I do remember that room in the rehabilitation hospital-it was like no other room. More things happened to me in that one small space than had happened to me in my entire life. " The victim of a devastating motorcycle accident, author John Kennedy Rizzo knows too well of the social, spiritual, and medical aspects of traumatic brain injury. Rising from Hell traces his path through partial paralysis, incapacitating depression, and terrifying panic attacks. On his long road to rehabilitation, Rizzo discovered ways to overcome impossible odds. [+]
He speaks with compassion and wisdom as he encourages brain-injured people to find their way to the enabled life that may well lie within their grasp.

Review Adventures in Latin America: The Life of One Foreign Service Wife / Creative Arts Book Co:

When Betty Hahn married Maurie Bernbaum in the winter of 1942, she knew that he was an American Foreign Service Vice Consul. However, she could never have known of the exotic places that she?d end up, of the fascinating people she would meet, or of the wonderful children she would bear. There was no warning about making apple pie for President Eisenhower or nearly losing Adlai Stevenson?s pants. The prospect of creating a wide portfolio of vivid, lustrous paintings, of bearing a daughter at 10,000 feet?all but dreams of the often dramatic future that she would one day experience. Betty Bernbaum relates the story of her captivating life in South America with the charming ease of a dear relative. Her relaxed, ?you-are-there? narrative, coupled with a wonderful insert of photos and the author?s own artwork, immerse the reader in the always exciting life of a young family in a foreign land. Rather than experiencing her journey as a tourist or spectator, Ms. Bernbaum dives right in, whether by helping out the native children or by using her newfound ham radio knowledge to facilitate earthquake rescue. A profoundly American story, Adventures in Latin America, celebrates the life of a brave, talented woman.

Review Matisse & Picasso: The Story of Their Rivalry & Friendship / Diane Pub Co:

Matisse & Picasso achieved extraordinary prominence during their lifetimes. They stand not only for different kinds of art, but also for different ways of living. Matisse, known for his restraint & intense sense of privacy, for his decorum & discretion, created an art that transcended daily life & conveyed a sensuality that inhabited an abstract & ethereal realm of being. In contrast, Picasso became the exemplar of intense emotionality, of art as a kind of autobiographical confession that was often charged with violence & explosive eroticism. This vol. explores the compelling, competitive, parallel lives of these two artists & their very different attitudes toward the idea of artistic greatness, toward the women they loved, & ultimately toward their confrontations with death. Illustrated.
